Well Rantall not getting a Go so they be about the same.

Daicos is Clearly Better then Macrae at the Moment

I hope we get to see Rantall tomorrow night.

Yeah I doubt Rantall plays, it all depend how many players they are taking in, if anyone will be rested. Or if they'll look to settle round 1 team

I thought they only where allowed a Certain amount in Official Practice Games?

Not physically ready and not talented enough to simply walk into the team, will likely take a few years to find his feet.

The only time it would sense is perhaps a star player like Grundy is playing every week with an injury that's stopping him from performing, then he gets a short term injury that forces him out and allows his other injuries to heal and let's him finish the season strongly. With reefs finger injury he risks chronic issues, and would've been working on his fitness anyway with his poor endurance times

Yeah that’s probably a scenario where it would be. I agree with your assessment too that he’s not ready physically and he doesn’t have the talent to bridge that gap. He walked through the door as a midfielder, who hasn’t played in 12 months and coming off back stress fractures. That’s not conducive to playing early matches.

Henry on the other hand as an example doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of competition for a spot and hasn’t been injured. I can’t speak to the comparative talent of the two, but what I can say is McInnes didn’t have the talent to overcome the hurdles he had in front of him. I would dispute that it’ll take a few years to find his feet.

Langdon played every game in hsi debut year from a pick in the 60s. Cripps and Neale weren't considered top 5 pick on talent. Once a bloke enters the AFL the pick is irrelevant, it's just an indicator of how clubs viewed the player's talent at the final point of their junior career. If done a year earlier, the ordering of "talent" would be very different. If done a year later it would be different again.
And most likely, if COVID hadn’t hit, it would be different too.

Langdon was a mature aged recruit though.... just saying. I agree with your point. McInnes was being talked up as top 5-10 prospect going into the 2020 season. That he was denied the opportunity to cement that ranking and eventually slipped to a pick in the 20's is purely a bonus for us. I don't doubt both he and Macrae would have been pushing for a R1 spot alongside Henry if not for their setbacks.
Langers wasn't a proper mature age recruit. He played a year of u18s as an overaged player.

Whether or not Daicos is better isn’t the point. It’s just another player he has to compete with for a spot. We have a ton of young mids trying to push through for a senior spot right now.

But its still an excellent guide as to who plays early and often in their 1st season. To back that thought up just had a look at last years crop on draft guru

Picks 1-10, all played in their 1st season and av was 8.4 games
Picks 21-30, 5 of 10 played , average 1.4 games and only one played more than 2 games

I would suggest it would be pretty similar most years. its not absolute but draft position correlates strongly with games played in 1st season and games played over all.

Rising stars of the last 10 years are all top 10 picks bar Talia pick 13 and Taylor pick 28 (beat Bont by 1 vote)

Draft position can be used in your estimate of when a players debuts

Where do you think Randall is at. He seems to have gone backwards in pecking order over the pre season.

‘Please explain.
Not really, he was a pick 40 who got very little footy in his 1st season. He has never been that high up the order to slip much. A fair number of the kids we have drafted in the last 2 years wont have big careers aand these early rounds are part of the 1st steps in sorting last years draftees who played little and this years. Better for him if he is knocking the door down early but still has time. Would want to be close by late in season for sure

I think Kappa’s comments were also taken out of context. He wasn’t saying he didn’t have the talent to play early rather that in order to overcome the obstacles he had pre finger injury he needed to be a very high end talent. Which to be blunt he isn’t.

True though Rantall is NOT a Wingman

He wasn't in juniors, but if he makes it in the AFL it may be in a different role to what he played in juniors. A lot of AFL wings or flankers would or did play inside mid in a lower league.

If you draft a kid in the top 5, you’re probably forced to playing them early (particularly if they aren’t KPP) to satisfy members.

Generally draft choice taken is a decent indicator of talent - the best we have - but it's also miles out in a lot individual cases, so you can read too much into it when judging individuals, particularly when a last year of u18s was skipped, so you'd think it'd be less accurate than normal. God knows what we've got with this new batch.

He was taken the year after his draft year, played mainly VFL. That’s generally considered a mature age recruit.

He played as an overager in the u18s with a couple of VFL games. Maybe it's usually considered a mature ager, but the term to me makes me think of blokes in their 20s smashing it in their state league, who you'd expect to play seniors early. I don't think anyone thought that about Langers. He was a genuine surprise packet taken as a youngster who still looked physically immature.

Once again, I’m not sure how any of us who haven’t seen him play or train can possibly make that judgement. Especially based on the non-season that was last year....

We can't. Things like draft order and some of the phantom drafts are usually ok indicators, but there's always so many outliers that you've got to just cross your fingers and hope in a normal year - let alone this year.

I’m happy with it. I absolutely get your angle, but I know it’s too great a stretch to overcome no footy in over 12 months, a terrible fitness base, an injury profile (back stress fractures no less) and cracking a top 6 midfield. Have you ever seen a player overcome that many roadblocks and debut in the first month?

Henry good Chance of doing that

Obviously better judges of talent than those who watch, monitor and interview the kids for the past 2 years.

No player, no matter how talented, could overcome the roadblocks Reef has had over the past 2 years to play early. Which brings us back to the issue of him supposedly not being, in your words, a high end talent. I don’t get why anyone would make that call on him at this stage.
