because he is young. Hasn't played in over 12 months and hasn't had much exposure in the area he will be best at. Unless he gets played as a forward or defender..
I think it’s very likely that he’ll start in the forward line until he builds his tank to an acceptable level to play in the midfield.

If I think he’s in the best 10 players in this draft it’s an absolute no brainer that I place a bid.

Let’s compare the pair Jaidyn Stephenson v Brandon Starcevich in 2017 both were drafted in the first round. One blitzed in the first season and has stagnated whilst the other has been a slow burn who’s now a permanent fixture of the back 6 for a team that finished 2020 in 2nd. Drafting with a focus on the here and now is fraught with danger. Although I’m all for it if it means clubs are silly enough to pass on the likes of Reid and Cox who won’t do much in 2021.

It feels a bit like your trying to convince yourself that a club shouldn’t bid on Reef that early when ultimately it’s out of our control. My take on it is that all evidence points to us expecting a bid after our first two picks.
Yeah, I probably am trying to view it that way because I do want him, and it relieves stress of myself for the next few days haha.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Midfield is the ultimate goal, but he'll be built into it over time.

Just on Stephenson, I’m not sure anyone expected him to start the way he did. Being drafted as an absolute rake, most fully expected him to start the year in the VFL, and he may well have if we’d had a fully fit compliment of players to choose from in round 1.

Definitely not, but I would be equally shocked if people weren’t expecting him to be year 1 ready based on his mix of speed, endurance and talent. Who were we missing that would have kept him out? I’ve got Elliott and JDG and we played Crocker and Smith that night who I’d have had him in front of...

Fasolo I believe, who got injured or depressed or something.

High half forward is pretty much midfield with less stoppage action. That's where I think most young mids should cut their teeth. With a team like us who are looking at development and transitioning in some new kids next year (not that I think next year is a write off). High Half forward and wing are the roles I'd be using for young kids, rather than putting NQR veterans in those spots.

Could be off the mark here.

Anyone feel we were ok to give away stevo with Reef potentially coming on to the list? Essentially with Reef to fill the exact spot stevo vacated?

Insert the "why not both" GIF here.

Coincidentally it’s the role we had Stephenson and Phillips push through in 2020. Perhaps the club is potentially planning on McInnes/ Macrae (if it’s him) pushing through there for 2021 with Sier or Brown getting first crack at Treloar’s vacant spot?..

Yeah, I'm hoping that we don't continue to use Thomas, WHE and Mayne in those roles this year. I'd probably still play Greenwood because he sets such how a high standard of intensity and competitiveness - in a back pocket if they can squeeze him into the backline. I'd like them to have a look at Maynard in the middle.

Nobody can predict the future accurately.

There is not a single draft where the top 20 picks ever came out in exactly the correct order, using the benefit of hindsight. There will be players who went at 15 that should have gone at 5 and vice versus

To say we will pass on Reef because somebody else is ranked slightly better on paper is pure guesswork. If he is bid high I expect the club to (reluctantly) match. If we don’t they better hope the player they want instead is still there when their pick comes around..... and he’s worth it!!!

i'm looking at it this way. A team isn't bidding on a player who likely would need a season, or half a season in the VFL because he has barely played much minutes in the midfield. Especially if you're picking him over the likes of Will Phillips, Archie Perkins and the like.
So would you really bid on a player in the top 10 when he would need development? I'm not so sure.

Reef's best position may be the midfield, but top 10 picks are those expected to play right away. He won't. He needs experience in that area at a higher level than some school footy.

This is why I believe he won't go as high as the media are trying to sell us.

Be interesting to see who we ultimately draft but with 3 best 22 senior spots opening up I think competition for those spots will be very hot. Reef might not be ready for the midfield R1 2021 but that doesn't mean he couldn't nab a spot in F50 for example. Ditto any of the other draftees. Stevo debuted R1, Langers as well although he was a mature recruit.

No, we don't. But why wouldn't you want him? Most versatile player in the draft. He is certainly worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to get Reef. But if he's bid on at say pick 8 and we haven't made any moves to improve our draft hand, I don't think it's in the best interests of the club to give up pick 14 and have pick 16 slide even further back just to get him.

yeah, I get you. I would understand. I wouldn't like it though.

Just have to hope for the best.

Reef is pushing 195cm, most kids his height taken early are expected to take some time to develop.

While less than ideal, I'd be prepared to burn either 14 or 16 to match a bid if we're trading our 2021 1st into the 2020 1st round and we end up with 3x top 20-25 players out of this draft. Ideally that would be 3x top picks + Reef, but it's a nice haul just the same.

What is it with musos and kids names?
Frank Zappa called one of his kids Moon Unit.
That’s my favourite too.

Then you’ve got the likes of Jamie Oliver calling his kids “Petal Blossom Rainbow”, “Daisy Boo” and “Buddy Bear Maurice”. FFS.

Bob Geldoff and Paula Yates called their daughter “Heavenly Hiraani Tigerlilly” or some such shit.

Some parents are just arseholes though; like Robbie McEwen calling his son “Ewen”. Ewen McEwen...
