This week has been a hard one for all Geelong supporters, and there has been a great deal of pain. We don't want to believe stories in the media, and we believe too much in what people say. Football clubs run agendas, and so too do the AFL.

Today i loved the passion that i saw from Hird. Here was a bloke who could continue doing media work, and work in business and make a mint. He puts himself and his family in a stressful environment to assist a club he loves. A club he loves like his own family. He misled the general public for a cause. He is a great PR machine, and his task will be made easier with a million dollar support crew. He, unlike Voss, understands what his role is, and does what is required to achieve results. (Had the Bombers offered half the support to Knights maybe he might have been a little bit better). He has galvanised the supporter base around him, and clearly shows his loyalty. He would not coach another club. The passion is awesome. And what do we Cat fans get from our current player who is in the same league as a player?

Bomber Thompson. I listened to Cook today and realised how much more in this issue there is than what was being discussed. How can a club that was willing to offer a bloke 4 months off, need an answer by Monday. I believe he genuinely is burnt out, and does not want the daily grind of being head coach. I also believe Cook who said that Bomber had had discussions with Essendon people about a position. Bomber would have intended to continue on as Geelong coach but as the weeks have gone on i believe he has changed his mind. He has struggled this year with Gaz, as he has never had to deal with a selfish player for an extended period of time. Bomber is a players coach, and wants his players to be a team and be there for each other. The elitism being shown by Gazza would not have pleased him. It is evident it got to him, his current squeeze had a go at Pickers for goodness sakes.
His tenure at geelong is so underated. He is a top coach, and people manager. He has had to deal with the Geelong culture, and some very arrogant players. The same players who cost us another shot in a gf. His only major mistake in that tenure, was the off-field issue which would have been hard for him. He is the sort of coach that every club wants. And i have no doubt he will fill the Balme role better than any.
His comments about Gazza need to be taken in context. He sees Gaz committing treason, as it is as a player that your real roots are established.
I also think he has struggled with some of Frank's actions this year. He would not like the attitude of keeping this bloke was our only priority, and that Costa wanted to do anything to keep him. He is about people being fairly paid, not getting overs. If he was a money hungry coach he would have had contracts with incentives. Listening to his lack of negotiations gives you a clear idea of the quality of the man.
Cook bought some time, but also gave Bomber time to attend the BF to be with his boys. it would be sad for him not to be there.
In my mind he is one of our best coaches ever. Top bloke, and it was an honour to have him as our coach.

Cook, the best administrator and the reason this club is as professional as it is. He runs a great team, and knows footy inside out. The best recruit, and hope he can rebuild another era.

Costa has the passion and is a loyal and trusting bloke. I am getting the feeling sometimes he should back off. He is so loyal to his people, but his people don't always reciprocate.

Nathan Ablett
I am fed up with hearing that it is amazing that he was able to play AFL. This kid had the easiest run to a premiership medallion. He was overpaid during his time in the AFL, he was paid to think about what he wanted to do. We wanted to be a builder, which was very short term. He played for Broadbeach for a minute, he played at GC. No-one is making him play football, if he has issues good luck to him in sorting them out. But he is very happy to take money from people left right and centre, so either he gets himself sorted out or cops the relevant criticism for being an AFL footballer.

Pickering
An annoying manager, who dealt with Buddy's contract in a professional manner. His handling of the Gazza situation leaves a lot to be desired.

G.Ablett
Harley summed him up well. Ablett does not care for the consequences of his actions.
There has been a year long charade, with any leaks being denied, or alternative explanations being provided. Any goodwill has been long gone in what has been a very selfish decision by an elite footballer.

There have been some who argue that he was underpaid at geelong. Given that Geelong was not able to fully utilise him in the media during the early phase of his career, as he did not want to do media it limited his off field value. he signed a four year deal whereby it was very favourable given his standing at the time. And so he would have been happy to take the upside if he did not reach potential, but there are complaints from Pickering as he wanted to renegotiate a higher short term contract. No-one ripped him off, contracts are contracts and they work two ways.

Ablett snr and jnr commence a website to sell more merchandise to geelong supporters (site has been down for a week). Happy to milk innocent supporters for more and more.

The club has not been able to plan for next year. Contracts in the air, trades in doubt. Why o why. Just for one selfish little bald bloke.

The Ablett's are about themselves. Jnr does not show the leadership qualities of all the best players. He has led a charade for weeks and weeks.
Goodluck to him, and his family. He is no Hird. He is a simple judas, who can go and get flipped. He cause a great deal of pain this year to many good people. And what for, to please his new master.

So looking back at this month from Hell. The players need a kick up the backside. The arrogance and lack of passion needs to go, or they need to go (and that includes Mackie). Coaches are there for a reason. If another player wants to play charades, then pee them off. It is people like this that destroy clubs, and the fabric that takes so long to establish. Bomber will be gone, but i wish him well. He has been awesome.

Cook needs to roll some magic. And we will rebuild with a new mindset, and committed players. And any little judas blokes will be gone.

Long live the king.

decent post :thumbsu:

a lot of emotion, passion and drama in that one.

It's not the worst thing to wear your heart on your sleeve, so this is commendable.

and while I don't totally agree with everything that is said...

a few things to remember in this case are a few of my favourite quotes

"Condemnation without investigation is the height of ignorance"

"Read everything, listen to everybody, don't trust anything unless you can prove it with your own research"

cheers

Excuse the brief intrusion guys. Just wanted to say great OP, and that I really do admire the great work that Brian Cook is doing at the GFC. The guy is an absolute champion. I'd be bloody proud to have Cookie on board if I were a Cats supporter.

You guys have been pulled from pillar to post in the last few weeks, and today must've been really tough. No doubt the few days will follow suit. I just hope for the club's sake, you don't cop too much shrapnel from any departures. As much as there exists a big rivalry between our clubs, the great majority of us Hawks really do respect your club for what you have been able to do. And having lived in Geelong all my life, I certainly understand the 'hothouse' environment created for the club in this town by many others. The pressure must be difficult, at the best of times.

I have no doubt you guys will come out flying from this situation. If there's anything the GFC has, it's great resilience. :thumbsu:

Agreed its been a tough period for all of us. But as they say,"its lonely at the top". Naturally, when you are the best for a given period, people want what you have. We were well and truly hunted this year, which sucks. I feel, however, that a lot of this could've been avoided if the AFL weren't so driven by commercial interests and tried to cash in on a growth market by fabricating a team in a rugby state and stuffing them with money in the hope they succeed. Spare a thought for those in Tasmania or NT who live, breathe and s*** footy but dont have a team. We are seeing the truly ugly side of extreme capitalism...

Am I the only one happy that Bomber is leaving?

He was finished as a coach, he has saved us the trouble of a wasted year, our players will be enthused by fresh ideas and methods.

And, we'll probably beat Essendon and the Gold Coast by 15 goals each next year.

No mate. I'm with you! I think his time was due, and now he has apparently having a hard time, perhaps it is better that he makes way.

Thats not to say though that his contribution to this magnificent era at Geelong should be understated. I, for one, thank Bomber Thompson for all he has done.

But time waits for no-one.

Oddly, the only prob I had was with the opening para. :D

I believe Thompson when he says he is burnt out.

I don't believe the media. They aren't there to tell the truth, they are to make money for their employer. Wishful thinking, a wild imagination, and a penchant for not checking the facts: ladies and gentlemen, I give you Patrick Smith!

Believe the media whores at your own peril. They are choco block full of vested interests and sloppy reporting.

Patrick Smith's article today defending his "Children Overboard" article of yesterday is nothing but a thinly diguised attack on Thompson, Balme, and Cook - and the club in general. They are all liars now, apparently. And there is nothing wrong with Bomber, he is making it up. And when Bomber emphatically denies he had never agreed to an Essendon post, well then, who are you going to believe: Patrick, or Bomber?

Patrick Smith said Thompson would coach Essendon in his September 8th article. This is a lie, James Hird is the coach. Now he is saying everyone else is a liar when the truth contradicts his statements. When you are caught in a lie, lie lie and lie some more. Fatprick Smith you are a disgrace with no credibility. Wait until Thompson doesn't join Essendon, Fatprick Smith will be 2/2 lies in 1 month. Yet I guarantee he will write another article saying everyone else is lieing and it was a deal.

Fatprick needs to realise that just because people have a meeting, it doesn't mean that there is suddenly a partnership. Deals fall through more times than they come together, Fatprick Smith needs to learn to realise this and start reporting facts. Not gossip and here say which is continuously proven to be wrong. See how I am posting a fact. Patrick Smith is fat, and he is a prick. If I were to say Fatprick Smith was skinny because I saw him at weight watchers I would be lieing. Just because a person goes to weight watchers doesn't make them skinny. Just because Mark Thompson spoke with the Essendon heirachy members doesn't make him their next coach OR assistant coach.

Bomber had a dinner with fellow ex Essendon players last week including Hird(a reunion), and I'm sure they were into him about it, and he would be talking the talk with his old mates over a drink. So what, is what I say. We have all been in similar situations with old friends, and we all say "Yeah, yeah. Whatever."...and then the piss wears off. ;)

If the Coach is burnt out then why did the did the best CEO and the best President(according to the hype) not see that. Burn out is a slow and progressive situation and would be noticed. Costa spoke to Thompson on Monday night and didn't pick it up and amazingly Thompson didn't tell him. Or is someone not telling the truth.
Cook who has responsibility for staff well-being didn't know anything beyond that he was tired. Why didn't he notice, why wasn't he on top of this.
This has potentially cost us a chance to play in a GF.

But well done to the players who managed to play great footy again, except in the finals(and we now know why), all year and get to a prelim.Well done to the players who must have struggled with their management from someone who was 'burnt out'.

I'd never of pushed Bomber out the door but I don't think it's a bad thing that he is leaving this year. He's wanted to quit coaching since about 4 years so can definately understand burnout claims. I wouldn't be against him being director of football at Essendon either as it's hardly as demanding as being head coach.

Regarding Ablett I had accepted he was leaving 6 months ago. Little sad to see him go but it's not the end of the world.
