Strategy Regenerating our forward line

De Goey needs to play forward permanently. He is a descent mark for his size, and a good kick. I’d almost consider playing him as an undersized full forward. A bit like Daicos in 1990.
We need a centre half forward. Mihocek is not a strong overhead mark and neither in Membrey. McStay is only a battler and there’s no point hoping for a standout season from him, as it just won’t happen.
West could play on a half forward flank like Henry did before he went to Geelong.

Why would West play like Henry when he's 194cm and a good 6cm taller than Henry. No reason West can't become our mobile CHF.

Would be young and a risk, but rumours are Buller from Swans and then say West two tall's, with Schultz and Hill as small players could McStay go back and learn to be a key defender?

Just so want us to make sure Jamie E stays with us. He is a superstar who has found the elixir of youth.

Likewise, I hope we can retain Bobby.

Think we can look forward with excitement to our forward potential next year.
HH, Charlie West, Will Hayes all with another preseason under the belt and will get games. Think HH can potentially raise the roof next year, he is AFL ready and has loads of talent.

I am hoping that we can get Jack Buller as well, adding another young tall to the mix.

We can afford to lose on of the 3M's. Hope it is not checkers, as I revere him to a very special level.

But I think we have plenty of forward potential.

The main issue i see for us is how to get a bullock midfiielder so that JDG can go forward and Ned Long has another beside him to share the beast load.

Yes this should happen. McStay should have already been re-tooled as a defender to see if he can lock down a key back post.

i like this left field idea of MAY at CHF.
But only after he does some anger management and sensitivity training, and makes coffee's and tea's for the squad during the entire pre season.
His Reprogramming is essential.

May makes sense. We certainly know how to kick it to his advantage.

The want to refresh what we have for inexperienced and unknown options seems very strong. Our scoring needs to improve. I am concerned about the decision by the club to extend so many older players. Elliott and Hill keep. They are on the list and are quality. Checkers is banged up but a warrior. His form at the end of the season is not where he would be at the start of 2026. The club has a two year offer there. If he stays I would hope younger players overtake him. This would not be immediate. The Melbourne offer would be very appealing.

I think he’s too lightly framed.
Based on height alone, you may as well play Long at CHF, he’s also 194cm tall.
He's 93kg in his first season (vs Henry's current 80kg up from ~70kg in his first year) and taking contested and pack marks regularly in the VFL. Don't know how you think he plays more like Henry than a CHF.

If the price is right for May (both in salary and trade terms, particularly trade terms) I'd like to see us recruit him to operate as our defensive anchor, alongside Frampton.

Darcy Moore could then be given a free role where he is permitted to roam the field, possibly as a wingman who has a licence to run ahead of play in transition, similar to how Dempsey at Geelong plays, or a classical libero in football who typically starts at the back but has licence to progress up the field when in possession.

The flow on effect would allow us to play a smaller and more dynamic forward line, particularly where we're pushing numbers back when not in possession and looking to counter quickly when we win possession.

I don't think that our midfield is strong enough at the moment to continue to play a frontal pressure game, as we don't have the depth or the luxury of a combination like Rowell/Anderson. What we do have though is an incredibly efficient forward line when given space and a defence that held up for a large part of the year.

I would also like to see some variety in our mids next season, with players like IQ, McCreery and Jaicos getting more time in there, particularly someone like IQ who has a kick that's long enough to get over an opposition's zone.

I just want to see us go back to a similar 2023 game plan where we put numbers behind the ball and transitioned rapidly from defense into open space for our forwards.

We scored more points and had similar points against that season. Better than the current game plan of trying to lock the ball in the front half that stifles any 1 on 1 opportunities for our forwards. Our defense held up this year but our scoring ability struggled.

JUH would fix our forward line. He can do pre season in rehab
He won't be a bad option if we can help to sort out his issues. Extreme talent

As much as May and JUH would help our team and open up the possibilities of a new look forward line/backline depth by creating swing men.. fly just doesn't seem like the coach to take those sort of risks with characters like theirs, I'd like us to take the risk as a club and just try it tbh.
If we go with a similar game plan and fall short again it will feel like we didnt try hard enough to improve and move with the times.

Yea if Fly can't even keep Ginnivan in the team, no way we take on someone like JUH.

May is just a hot head but doesn't actually have those similar off field issues.

May should be fairly cheap given that Melbourne have shown him the door. More short term than what Silvagni would have been but buys us 1 to 2 seasons to draft/ develop some younger players?

Precisely.

Provides stability in the defensive half and the opportunity for us to rejuvenate our list over the next 1 to 2 seasons.

Dan McStay has been a big issue this year - why he was dropped, and why I am seeing now, we still tried Checkers ahead of him, even though I think that was a mistake in hindsight. McStay had a terrible year.

McStay should be our leading goal kicker (by average per game).
Also why Elliott is now worth more than his previous contract.
Also shows what a loss Bobby Hill was. We'd have won a couple of the close games with him in the side - he also gives away plenty of goals too. His absence was like 2-3 goals less a game.

Henry played as an undersized FF before he went to Geelong. His time on the flank for us was mostly a disaster.

I don’t mind the idea of De Goey as a forward though. Would love for us to get Petracca and move De Goey back to FF.
