Am I correct in thinking there is another AFLism in this that the Northern academies are exempt from the rule changes?

The northern academies fall under the same bidding rules as the NGAs do.

However, as part of their "assistance package" that was provided in 2019, Gold Coast were given the Darwin zone and have the ability to pre-sign players from that region before the draft without having to bid for them.

Thus the Suns were able to pick up A.Davies and J.Jeffreys, two additional top 25 prospects prior to last years' draft, for the cost of nothing.
