I fully expect Bazzo, Chesser, Culley and potentially our first pick to all pick one up next year. Now if we can pull 6-8 rising star nominations over the next 3 years we know our rebuild is a success.

I will say however from a list perspective I think this is the clubs lowest ebb and it's why we have to keep some of the senior players even with diminishing outputs because the next age brackets just don't have what it takes.

I think Hough was probably unlucky this year. Very consistent - but his standout games were round 11 (Sam De Koning had 19 disposals, 9 marks, 11 intercepts to get the nomination) and round 16 (D'Ambrosio got it with 23 disposals and 6 marks). Probably needed one more standout game later in the year.

I think Culley gets one assuming he plays most of the year next year. Bazzo possibly, not that flashy but another preseason might see him more involved (I think he is going to be great - just not sure he is physically ready enough to have dominant games at this stage - so might not get a nom). Chesser and pick 2 - hopefully, but too early to say.

Was interesting to read in the PerthNow article the quotes from Nesbitt (i.e. that we are/were a top-8 side this year except for everything going wrong). Hoping that is just him doing the commercial stuff, as if that is the view from the coaches and playing group this rebuild could be a long one.

Sounds like fluff to please supporters but who knows? Simmo's been fairly adamant that a rebuild is in order and it will take some time.

this year looks a little similar to 2010 finals

us near bottom
freo elim final at home

top 4 make prelims?

Fremantle and us are often out of sync.

They’ve been in the comp for 28 years now.

Made finals in 8 of those years - 4 times we’ve also made finals (2003,06,12,15), 4 times we haven’t (2010,13,14,22)

There’s only been 5 years both sides have missed finals - 2000,01,08,09,21

It’s helps explain why there haven’t been a lot of genuinely great derby games as one team has normally been better than the other. Usually us

Both made finals - 4 times
Both missed finals 5 times
One in, one out - 19 times (WCE in 15, Freo in 4)

Two thirds of the time one side is clearly better than the other in any given season

Good read this

Whilst it’s about Essendon and their struggles this bit could easily be applied to us and our current predicament

“No one team has any more right to be successful quicker than any other team, just because they’re a big-name club.

“You’ve got to knuckle down and commit to doing the work. Good clubs will do that and come out of it with success.”

If Zorko didn't know about the diagnosis, it's an incredibly sh*t sledge to come up with.

If he did know...
Someone elsewhere mentioned they played junior footy together, so fair chance he was aware of the mother being terminally sick. As bad as a racist remark on the field for mine, I don’t see how Zorko is captain after this and he really should be internally sanctioned by the lions. This situation has the potential to derail their finals campaign if he takes to the field next weekend.

Zorko is 33
Petty is 23

I know Zorko is short but I'd be surprised if they played junior footy together :p

Never saw this coming.

It's amazing how Vic journalists (hello Caro) like to insinuate that Adelaide/Perth crowds are somehow rougher and more uncouth, when this seems to happen all the time in Melbourne.

Not to mention stories of truly disgusting behaviour in the suburban days.

Spare me 🙄

It's a well known fact that booing becomes threatening when it occurs west of Warnambool

Reminder that Luke Shuey lost the Rising Star to Heppell but ended up winning a norm

Yeah, you can see why Nisbett is pushing hard for the steady, stable approach. I back the concept as long as it's not used as an excuse to keep mediocre people in place. I'm happy with out assistant coaches but S&C needs a big shake up. I'm not sold on Simmo but it all comes down to how he adapts with hopefully a full team to select in rnd1 next year.

There’s a middle ground. It’d be a knee jerk reaction to throw everything out but there needs to some measured change.

Stability is wonderful to have and a key to achieving success, however, it can also lead to an organisation becoming stale and unwilling to embrace new ideas or fresh thinking

My biggest concern is that those in charge who have overseen our decline are too willing to put it down to external factors while being oblivious to internal issues that have also had an impact

Maybe I’m wrong and they’re in the process of rectifying what they can, I certainly hope so, but it’s hard to draw that conclusion from what Nisbett, in particular, has said
