Sick of anybody saying it’s because of the big effort against Port.

It’s early ****ing season. The players aren’t tired. Just piss weak.

It gets hard and they give up. We have been trying to sugar coat this shit for a long time. 2018 was a blessed outlier.

I hope all the posters who were having a crack at those of us pissed off with the Port game close out are watching Richmond tonight and are able to understand the need to bury teams properly rather than piss away good percentage and psychological edges that come from putting teams to the sword.

Plenty have teams have replicated their form from one week to the next. The difference between us and Richmond is that they keep going when they have built up a lead whereas we stop dead in our tracks. They did it against Port 2 weeks ago and again last week.

We also had Port over a barrel in a half while Richmond were played off the park by them. Swings and roundabouts, every week of footy has the potential to be entirely different to the last due to any range of factors. We’re likely cooked now due to our injuries but the comp really isn’t that elite and there’s no one consistently good week to week. With a full selection of players we’re still comfortably right among the best even despite our ability to get too complacent.

Richmond showed a definite shift in their tactics against St Kilda.

After opening the season with tackles inside 50 counts of 6, 7, 5 and 10 they had 18 tonight against the Saints - you have to go back almost two years to the day (Round 5, 2019) for a time that the Tigers surpassed that figure.

Richmond ranked last in the competition for tackles inside 50 and during 2020. They also accordingly came in lowest for the proportion of tackles that were committed inside 50 at 14.3%.

Their performance tonight of 18 of a total of 68 is 26.5%.

During 2017, the Tigers fronted the competition in both of these areas, averaging 14.3 tackles inside 50 per game, proportionally 20.5% of their total tackles.


Having been unable to slow down opposing ball movement and create turnovers from the defensive trap on the wing as a result of the new rule, Richmond it appears have gone back to the future with the full-field press as a means of disrupting the release kick from the opposition defence that has caused problems for them.


Ironically it would now seem that a rule change invoked to create more ball movement transition from defence to attack will instead lead to a renewed chapter of forward pressing tactics from coaches.

It is much easier to maintain the rage when you don't have to travel every second week as well. Not giving excuses for our performances when we've folded but travel means you don't get easy game after easy game to build into the finals.

Why I cherish 2018 and the others is because it is damn hard for our club (well non Victorian sides, but us particularly to win a premiership). We have to have many many things go our way, the margin for error is a lot less. Travelling every second week is a fact of life, but it doesn’t make it any less of a burden. It’s easy to say, “oh well they should be used to it”. Of course. But year after year takes a toll. In a “competition” where if you are only a little bit off your game and you get rolled, being on the road every second week is a huge challenge.

I have long accepted that we (WCE) will never go back to back or have a dynasty like that of Hawthorn or Richmond. Is that defeatist? Well yes. But it is an uncomfortable truth IMO.

Look at Richmond. Last week was their first interstate trip for the season. Tonight the beginning of another run of Melbourne matches, they don’t leave Victoria until the weekend of the 22nd May. 8 of their first 10 matches in Victoria. That is what we are up against. We need to be brilliant. And unfortunately, we are not.

Just take it week to week, hope we start seeing some more progression from some of the younger and lesser lights and work towards one day getting back to the summit. History says we have another 10~ years to go

I don't think that was a hard decision for Simpson because Jetta is a quiet person and not one of the 'boys club' who could - or can - never be dropped no matter how bad they play.
