Our defenders last year were great. As a unit, they help up against a lot of entries. Our points against tally can hardly be a reflection of the defenders. Most of them are young and still developing too, with depth in a range of defensive positions.

Many players down there having career-best years: Shep AA, Duggan on the up, Nelson and Cole improved their consistency.

Barrass had some games where he was clearly beaten, but also had games where he was near best on ground. Moreover, he was playing with passion and impressed the club with his repeat efforts.

Rotham impressed on debut, and Edwards looked composed for what little game time we saw of him.

On the downside Gov had a difficult year with form and injury, and Hurn's decline was sharp. This is where our we should be marked down, comparing ceiling and output.

On the other hand, Freo have one elite defender in Ryan, who really did it all. They have perpetually injured tall backs. Then they have a bunch of players who did relatively well in 2020 given their lack of height. Good results from their low ceiling players.

Sheppard was AA, Barrass placed 4th in our best and fairest whilst Duggan had arguably his best season.

I'd suggest our forward line (particularly the small pressure forward role) let the team down more consistently than our defense in 2020.

Then there's the old midfield chestnut who just looked to be cruising in 2nd gear sometimes. Even more so without the hunger and contested stuff from Yeo.

Regardless, with McGoverns worst season for sometime, Hurns slow start/drop in form due to age, and missing the creativity from Jetta, we lost a bit.

Agreed.

Hurn's decline and Jetta's … whatever that was meant we were far more conservative coming out of defence, and the injuries and the bad form of our small forward stocks (Flyin' excluded) meant we were playing guys who weren't up to it, like that square headed fellow whose name I've already forgotten, or MOAR TALLS!!!

The addition of Langdon and Witherden will hopefully help up forward and down back.

A lot is riding on Yeo's fitness too.

Our defence has 3 elite players. Sheppard, Gov and Hurn. Hurn is almost ready for his superannuation. The rest of the guys are all good but mostly pumped up by our own bias.

Port have re-signed Hinky til 2023.

Looks like Port wont be a factor in finals next year now going by the past.

but watch out in 2022 when his contract is to be renewed
Like North going all out for Scott after their two flukey prelim appearances.

How can they not see that Port had one fluke season? The core of their list is over 30, they're due for a rebuild pretty soon. Ken is a one trick pony who occasionally gets deep in finals, only for his one dimensional gameplan to be found out.

Hurn actually played quite well in the back half of the year. He was out of form at the start of the season, but so was most of our team.

That's true, but his kicking out of the square was very predictable and lacked any creativity.
It was like that in 2019 too. [Look right, look left, look right and kick to the exact same spot on the right each time. Ball gets spoiled back into D50, rush through for behind and repeat the process]

Was never going to get sacked after finishing on top.
