Reid and Brown

I've watched every game they have played so far this season including pre-season and neither is ready for the big time. No doubts they will be good value in time, but nowhere near ready.

I think Brown is behind Goldsack at the moment in terms of AFL readiness.

Reid has to contend with Medhurst if he is to be selected as a forward, which will be tough for him at present.

Its weird, Egan is a muppet at VFL level but looks dangerous at AFL level.

There are a number of reasons really, he really feeds on big crowds and he needs good players around him who know what he's doing. In the VFL he will do the absolute correct team thing but his teammate won't know what he's trying to do. The best example I can think of is Egan running along the wing, Davies is running alongside him, Egan stops, props, draws a player and hanballs it inboard to Davies, but Davies has put his head down and tried to sprint forward. The ball spills to the opposition. Other examples are where he expects to get more time and better shephards but gets in trouble and has to rush his disposal.

JAJH would you have said the same about Dick?
Yeah, good question. Personally, I thought Dick didn't have the physical attributes to compete at AFL level yet, but he certain has that Didak type of flair about him. I was just as surprised when Isles made his debut, but to qualify what I said about Reid and Brown, Brown appears to lack aerobic fitness and awareness and although Reid is very lively around the ball, he lacks the skills to take the next step.

No need to rush them. Give them time to gain confidence and learn there trade in the VFL.

I sometimes think our expectations of 18 y.o draft kids against men is a little unfair.

Agree with that assertion. I have seen a fair bit of Reid and he lacks penetration and accuracy in his kicking. Gets his mits on the ball but dont think he has the maturity to handle missing gimme set shots from 40 out in front of 77 thousand at the g(as he has done for Willy)...just yet.Could stifile his progress...physically he would be taking a pounding...Brown dont know as much about but injury has hurt him a bit by all accounts.......Goldsack is my smokey for a game...Pity about Anthony cos i had him earmarked this year.
All bodes well for the future tho...Prest / Wakes /Clem all ageing and with Anthony/Brown/Goldsack (Maxy still young)we have a possible nucleus for the back division.
Add Dawesy - Reid up forward if they devlop and we potentially a capable spine...all if's but theoretically sounds good at least...

Overlooking O'Brien, whose development this year is exactly what the coaches go on about every year, the middle tier stepping up to the challenge. Will be fantastic for us in the coming years.

This is not uncommon. Many very good players go down to vfl level and struggle. It happens at all levels of footy. Even used to happen alot when I was playing in the lower levels of the ammos. I remember a couple of games where we had 2 of the clubs(and leauges)big guns who played 2s because of work commits in the arvo who had alot less of the footy than they did in the 1s. Its not just the crowd and putting your head over the ball. The very good players know where to run and know if they get themselves in the right spots they will generally get the footy and when you drop down a level your teamates are often not as equiped to get it to you. Because the game is not as quick the opposition can also close down the space alot quicker. For a guy like egan this would hurt. His biggest assest at the moment is his pace and he has alot more of it in Afl than he does in Vfl. No great concern that he does not dominate vfl IMO

there is no need to rush them in, our talls are all playing pretty well at the moment. dont forget harry is playing really well as the regulars. ALso we now have, brian and cloke up forward playing well so yeah no spot at the moment.

Umm you know, our top two draft picks last year.

I'd like to see Reid get a run sometime this year, Brown might have to wait till next year.

lol I know, sarcasm doesn't always work using the net.

I just meant, we dont need to worry about them this year, they're big players, let them develop, maybe give them a 2-3 games later on in the year against lower sides.
