Beams had a terrific year and was shaping up as one of our hardest and most courageous players. But he was poor in both Grand Finals, by his standards, with 12 and 11 disposals respectively.

Was it a case of a young player tiring as the season came to an end? Or was it bigstageitis - which, notably, didn't affect Sidebottom, except perhaps to spur him on to greater efforts.

Beams always seems so Clint Eastwood cool, I didn't think he'd be rattled by the occasion. What went wrong? He's not yet 21, so plenty of time to mold him to avoid the Leon Davis effect in future finals.

Can we give him an injection of Steele? Or is it just that some players, by their nature, are incapable of lifting when it really counts?

Your thoughts?

Seemed to lack a yard of pace when they heat went on in the GF. Still most players are carrying something by the GF so maybe he had some issues we are not aware of. He may also have been given a role we are not aware of and sacrificed his game for the team.

Hoepfully his off field issue gets cleared up before the start of next year or he may struggle.

i wouldnt say its even a case remotely close to leon, beams for a second year player surely has exceeded all expectations on him in both seasons.

even still he has had far better GF games than leon has had in his career.

not at all worried here , he proved himself in some big games against the cats and a few other top four teams this year. i dont think the bigger stage worries him at all.

is there any updates with this situation ? seemed to have gone quiet since both players were named regarding that incident.

Nothing to worry about at all. Don't think all this sexual assault stuff will affect him to much next season either (assuming it's all nothing, otherwise he wont be around next season).

Absolutely agree 100%.

Perhaps the reasoning behind him not stepping up is his youth. I noticed him tiring towards the end of the season which I was a bit disappointed with but prefer to look at it as a positive. He's a second year player who, has exceeded all expectations put on him by the club, supporters. He really has surprised us all. For me the stand out is change in size since starting at the club. He really has worked hard at his goals as I see it and with a cool mature mind, this young bloke has a bright future

The big stage got to the young player. Nothing more, nothing less.

This

Now he's experienced it he'll be better, iirc he was poor in his finals last year where as this year he was serviceable to good in the qf and pf. He'll be better fir the experience

Which although i like Beams, Sidebottom is and will be the better player.

Yes he will.

Sidebottom has top 5 midfielder in the comp capacity.

People expect to much of Beams and Sidebottom, they are in the top 5 1st/2nd year players. Both will continue to improve.

Talk about tough markers. Not everyone can win a Norm Smith. Maybe Leon isnt the only person in the world that suffers from a few nerves.

Then again, Beams might have been asked to do something on the St. Kilda half-backs.

I think he needs a few more tats...

I actually agree with the thought that we expect to much from both Steele and Beams and I have been guilty of it too. They are and have performed above expectation for second year players and whilst one has been superb in the home and away seasons and the other has been a stand out in finals it's only fair to expect this kind of inconsistancy from younger players.

I think it's probably a combination of fatigue and letting the big stage get to him a tad. On top of that it's hard to contribute week in week out of a HFF and in the structure we have he is not required to. Beams has a quiet one and someone else steps up, that's how we roll.

Plenty of gun players have had up and down second seasons and plenty of those had second seasons a year or more older than Beams. I really hope he is cleared (legitimately) becuase he will be a gun. I liken him to Scott Burns as a player and he is in front of Burns at the same stage IMO. Whether he has the brain of Burns though is up for debate. That's a big ask.

Beams had a terrific debut season in 2009 no doubt about it,The Attention was on him alot last year but with the Inclusion of Ball,Jolly no-one has payed alot of attention to the South port boy.
He is a Premiership player with alot of great footy ahead of him don't get stuck with this Sexual Allegations s***! he will have a good year next year :thumbsu::D

re beams from a pure footy viewpoint, clearly a terrific prospect, had 2 excellent seasons. No doubt his 2 GF were down on his season, did a couple of nice things in GF 2 but made a number of disposal errors by hand, seemed to lack composure at certain moments.

Looking at his game, to me he is a really well rounded footballer, not quick and needs to be sharper when the ball is below his knees. His role will evolve also, as this young team matures.

Hope the kids has the desire and commitment to continue to improve and become a 200 game player for our club. Best example of improvement i can think of is Buckley, who clearly improved in certain aspects of his game until he was about 30 -31. Swan is another wonderful example.

To me it clearly looked like Beamsy has slowed down considerably towards the end of the season, probably was just worn out or had a slight niggle.
The boy will be a gun.

inside players wear down and tire quicker than outside players. beams got knocked about way more than steele and no matter how good you might be, it takes a few years in the AFL to be conditioned to that kind of punishment. Case in point, Dale Thomas.

thought beams was struggling from about round 20-21. but as far as second year players go, he is flying.

I said before the second GF that Beams looks like becoming the next Davis.

Don't think he's performed in ANY of the 4 or 5 finals he's played in. Not a good start.

He did a lot of hard work off the ball and in the clinches.
Maybe he was not great with ball in hand but he put his body on the line many times in the finals.

I reckon he'll look forward to the opportunity to play better next season.

Its all about finding the right position for him. Eventually he needs to be our in & under mid that Luke Ball is now. A lot of the year he has played forward & thats not his best position. I say let Luke Ball teach him & then he takes over that important role.
