TAS relocation rumours?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

This thread may yet come back to bite me on the arse.

No, because actually that Bullfrogs waffle is completely irrelevant.

This thread is about RUMORS of a club relocating to Hobart and North have already EXCLUDED themselves from CHOOSING to be considered.

End. Of. Story.

This thread now only has troll relevance in relation to North.

Dunno Bradley ... sounds like SLF has got the inside word on something, and its got him a bit worried.

Perhaps not as EXCLUDED as you thought??? Very interesting, whatever it might be.

C'mon SLF ... share!

It should be remebered that a north melbourne supporter started the bulldogs/north comparisons, strange for a north troll thread...

All SA and WA teams games are on free to air in their respective states. All away games are live, pretty much all home games are live or near live. The need and demand for foxtel in SA and WA is minimal. How many Roos games are on free to air in Melbourne? 5 or 6? I guess if you are a North supporter and want to see your team play, you need foxtel. Go figure...

I guess you have a different understanding of the word "exclusive" to the rest of humanity.

Exactly. Even if Port folds, the second AFL licence is such a money spinner for the SANFL that there is precisely zero chance they would pawn it back to the AFL for a one off cash injection - they'll simply form a new, broader based team.

There is absolutely no threat to any non-Victorian team, not Port, not GWS. If a team relocates, it will be Victorian, and it will be the weakest member of the herd.

Yes - if there is a relocation to Tasmania, or a merger which will result in a new Tasmanian team, the relocated/ merged teams will be a Victorian team(s). The question of course is which one? Given the need for members to agree to the relocation/merger the AFL will have to offer some very good incentives for this to happen

Currently I cannot see any members of a victorian team agreeing to a relocation/merger

We have also opened with our new facilities a child care centre, a university campus, the new home of the wrfl and soon will have a 6 court community basketball stadium, the community aspects of norths stretch to....a classroom...

A public gymnasium, an indoor basketball court, the state fencing centre, change room facilities for local sports to use, AFL umpires' training facilities It's all looking much of a muchness.

North a chance to play home games in Hobart
NORTH Melbourne has held ''very preliminary'' discussions with the AFL about playing home games in Hobart.

North Melbourne is open to the idea of playing games at Hobart's Bellerive Oval - Tasmania's Test cricket venue - but the club's interest in Tasmania would be conditional upon there being no suggestion of a permanent relocation.
North a chance to play home games in Hobart

Are North a Victorian club when it suits them?

Move interstate or die.

That's what they should be told.

Do you even read your own sources?

Speaking before the Hawthorn-Adelaide game last Saturday, Tasmania's Minister for Tourism Michelle O'Byrne said the government would not provide financial assistance to encourage teams to play in Tasmania, besides Hawthorn.

Well, that's the end of that then.

Jake Niall getting his Caro Wilson on here I see.

He 'understands' something off the back of unnamed source.

Facts as I understand them are that Cricket Tassie have approached us/are about to approach us and some other clubs about playing games there.

Its sad to see a once half decent journo like Niall stooping to this shit.

That sentence alone paints a pretty dim picture of how much faith North have in being left to their own devices by the AFL.

So you must of got wind of this a bit earlier SLF ... hence the comment about this thread biting you on the arse. Unless there is something else you're not sharing??

Anyways, I'm not gonna go on about this. My only comment is that IMO I think North should concentrate on its alignment with Ballarat and leave Tassie to the Hawks. I reckon there's some real potential in the regional Victoria market and looking at interstate games again would seem like the club going back on its word.

Nah, that's about the strength of it.

Its a weak article that proves nothing at all, but it is meat (as we've already seen) for the flogosauruses to feast upon.

I honestly feel sorry for North supporters having to trott out the same lines pretty much every week when one of these threads is started. I also admire their persistance and belief in their club.

Who knows whether the Tassie team will be a relocated one or a new franchise .... but, if it is to be a relocated one, then who is the most likely candidate?

There is a pretty general consensus amongst supporters of all teams but North that they would be the prime candidate. Obviously they disagree.

So the question to North supporters out there:

If the Tassie team was definitely going to be a relocated team, who do you think would be the prime candidate and why?

My breakdown of candidates is as follows:

North - Have already shown they will be very difficult to relocate anywhere. However AFL could contrive a situation where given their lack of support and funds they are left with little option.

Dogs - I have posted my reasons why this is unlikely already. Suffice to say we represent one of the biggest growth corridors in Australia and the AFL is finally realising how important a healthy and successful Bulldogs is to the competition.

Saints - Going through a good period of success and their support is currently up, however the increase can be largely attributed to bandwagoners and giddy teenage girls. Long term feasibility still questionable.

Hawks - Given the already strong association with Tassie this could be a possibility. Members have in the past proved to be fickle and strongly considered merging. Very strong membership numbers may save them but they are a chance.

Dees - As with Hawks members can be fickle and also considered merging. Don't have the strong membership of the Hawks to back them up and sometimes you've got to wonder whether their supporters actually care. If not for the Melbourne name they may have been shafted already.

The way I see it, the main contenders would be 1st place North, 2nd place Hawks, 3rd place Saints.

Also, the AFL wields enough power to make circumstances difficult for almost any club it chooses, and whilst I don't know the full history I believe this is part of what happenned with Fitzroy. Its been doing this in some capacity to North for a bit too - draw, stadium deals, FTA TV, etc.
The concern I have is that North is perceived to be the no. 1 choice of most supporters other than our own precisely because the AFL has, as you've pointed out, been making things difficult. (It wouldn't surprise if they were behind our recruitment of Laidley too! ;)) All those factors you mention conspire to undermine fan development and retention (and therefore financial viability).

In theory the AFL 'compensate' us via the (inadequate) CBF which merely has the effect of keeping us in the AFL's power and feeding 'poor NM' cries by opposition supporters who have a curious love of bashing us for suffering the resultant adversity.

I have little doubt, if the AFL has a mind to, they can make it harder still by removing the CBF altogether, whilst continuing to allow inequities in opportunities for exposure through the draw and FTA etc. These, along with the stadium deal which is particularly cruelling, are issues many other clubs don't have to deal with. The AFL has a 'socialist' mentality when it comes to the on-field side of things, but anything but when it comes to off-field.

I love this paragraph in the article...
North Melbourne is understood to be interested in a Hawthorn-like deal, which could conceivably involve three or four home games in Hobart - the Hawks play four at Launceston under their lucrative deal with the Tasmanian government - but sources said yesterday that talks were still ''very preliminary''.

No shit they would be interested in a deal like the Hawks. LOL.

Too be honest, I can't see this happening. Bellerive is not a great choice for football and needs too much work. And secondly, North just don't have the brand power Hawthorn does.

North would be too scared they would be forced to relocate, therefore not having the balls to hammer out a good contract and needing the money too much to walk away.

Time to go through the hundreds of posts from SLF, Brad Roo and Zebra about the Tassie Hawks.
What is it going to be now, the Canberra Roos, The Gold Coast Roos or the Hobart Roos? 5 homes in 5 years. :D Don't worry the White Knights will save you with millions of Dollars.

Well, that's the end of that then.

That just means North won't get paid $800,000 a game plus all the monies from signage at the ground and food. :D

One million dollars a game compared to 15,000 fans at Etihad stadium and breaking even. Hold on, North get guaranteed a $100k a game now.....

If it secures the club as a Melbourne club ( similar to Hawthorn) then I am happy for the club to go down that path.

Whatever it takes.

Hahaha, no the fencing centre is actually your co tenant and were an important part of you getting any state funding, the basketball court is also primarily there's for their work.
Also, the umpires are there temporarily, they are there for a few weeks cos Arden street is conveniently positioned.

Never ceases to amaze when some Dogs and North supporters look to gloat about somehow being in better off field than the other club.

Neither have been powerhouses in that respect, and unlikely ever to be. I'm sure most of it is from trying to convince themselves that their/our club won't be the next to jump, but get a grip. I'd be shattered if it happened to the dogs, but I certainly wouldn't wish it upon the Roos either.

Good call.

Given the way the article is written, it all looks very speculative to me.

I'd be disappointed if the club IS considering selling 4 games a year to Hobart.

And if that isn't the case, I'd be disappointed if they don't come down like a ton of bricks on The Age for running such destablising speculation.
