basically missed his 1st yr through injury, has next yr to show us what he's made of

Did some very good stuff in patches at vfl level. I like that he & Rioli have already played so much footy together at St Pats.

Butler was clear star for three years in that team with Hopper etc

What player would you compare him to or that he should get inspiration from?

Not sure but he played alot of time in the juniors through the guts. Good tackler, can kick goals on the run, looked like he was coming second in the 3k too.

But who tho that we think can play well enough?

I guess that is most likely the view the club have taken as well ! Perhaps we r planning to rookie one or 2 as it would be a cheaper option ! Maybe Richards (if still available) or Brown , both not world beaters but fill a need

Yes but not all dfa are getting offered 2 year deals by sides , I'm guessing most would be grateful to have any offer put in frt of them

Maybe. But would you rather have Chol getting a game ahead of say Chris Dawes? And if you were someone like Dawes, why would you take a one year deal to be a 6th in line kpp?

I sense in the draft we will take young kids with our first two picks - 2 x midfielders

Then an experienced player with our pick in the 80's - we really do need a key defender IMO

And then Jayden Short is pick 100 as upgraded rookie

Bartel. Cruises along pretending to do nothing and then hurts you with some quick jabs . Moves to the right spots and makes his own space. It's taken him a while to build up his motor, but I liked what I saw in him last year. He needs to build his motor to an afl level still as ATM he's probably at a fwd flank VFL level.
We need him in the guts just doing his angry ant stints, but he's going to have to work for it bc there's a lot of blokes ahead of him. Next year I will be interested in his improvement under Caracella and I'm glad he got a life line bc we will see what an extra year in a more mature body will do to his game.

I hope we don't go down the Dawse path as this reminds me of picking up Azza or Pia and just a waste. Just grab a kid and put time into him. It's about time Elton lifted his game or just put games into Chol if injuries hit. Or ruck Maric or Hampson and have Nakkers at CHF rotating . Richards would be nice as he would open up some options.

Bartel? I could live that, he was Richmond supporter growing up.

As for Butler, I know next to nothing about him, but if he studied Bartel's game and did his job injury free, I don't think there would be many spots keeping that style of player out of the side.

He's very sneaky and clever like Bartel and just needs maturity ATM. He also likes a goal .
Nearly every bloke that doesn't play for the RFC was a Tiger when growing up. How many times have I heard that line? :p

Taylor Hunt supported Richmond growing up................as did Fyfe, Bontempelli, Hodge and Bartel.

Hopefully the VFL team starts like it ended last year and Butler gets quality preperation for the AFL.

I thought they were a lock to make finals this year, but they started so poorly with game plan ,injuries and set ups.
They finished off like a house on fire and should be very competitive next year. Looking forward to watching them .
McBean will be a loss at VFL level , but life goes on.
With Caddy Prestia and Nakkers this will force 3 afl Players down the rung.

That is all fair enough, but it is predicated that you think he is alright. I think he is meh, which was why I just said maybe our boys don't want to waste getting him. Also what do you mean he is from the first round? He was a 2nd rd rookie pick.
I meant to say that he was from outside the first round when saying "out of the first round". I think he is at best a serviceable best 22 player and at worst an OK depth player rather than a superstar or a spud.
Just on this, this is what I meant earlier. Just because we don't hear about, doesn't mean the club hasn't done the research.
Yeah that is true. I would have been concerned if they didn't look at getting a KPF at all, but if they did and didn't get any for various reason, then I guess I am alright with it. Sometimes I just want to see evidence that the club noticed a glaring problem so that I am comfortable they know what is going on as a supporter

Agree and good summary I have seen a fair bit of butler and he is a natural footballer

as a matter of interest, how did he compare to Rioli?

He was better.

He was a star for three years.

Rioli was only in the top side for 1 year (maybe a little bit of year 11) and was dropped a few times.

Clearly wasn't taking it that seriously, but Butler was definitely the better player at St Pats (also a year older).

Yeah I guess this is my point. Im sure we know we need more tall fwds, however there is no point in getting some in when we don't think they are good enough. Plus we do have Chol, and Moore and maybe some new draftees as well.

cheers for the reply, i agree with giving him another year, missed yr 1 with injury so is worth another chance. you'd know more than me but was happy with his tackling etc in the Nab game she has played.

When do they announce train on players is that before or after the draft?

Just fell off my chair and spilled my beer :D did I read from someone they hoped Elton or Chol could have a break out year like Tom Boyd?????
I think we would have seen that from Elton who has been in the system now five years; and Chol is a million miles off it.
Boyd, who had his detractors, was a No. 1 pick. I think there's a vast difference here.
A breakout year like Boyd ... a whole bunch of spaceships have landed.
To end, I am not sure why Butler or Batchelor are still on the list.. Both mediocre and marking time til the axe falls next year. Give someone lese a crack at it!
