Remember 1999

Being a 'decade' kid is about remembering things you identify with from your childhood. People tend to use 'I'm a 80s/90s/whatever kid' to attach themselves to things as some sort of validation...

Yeah. My childhood is just a collection of TV shows, music videos, games, websites but I don't really associate them with any time period. I guess for me it's because it kind of blends the late 90's and early 00's together and I'm not really sure which group I fit into.

Jeez, this made me realize I used to watch so many more movies compared to now.

I was in the UK in 1999.

Had one of the worst new years ever for the millenium in London, a big group of us went out but we lost the guy that had all our booze in his backpack. Central London was crazy with people crowded everywhere trying to get around the Thames for the "River of Fire" NYE fireworks that never even happened due to some technical glitch. Lucky for me and my mate we'd downed a bottle of vodka between us before we went out and we were able to scam drinks off other people to avoid sobriety but the night was still a major letdown.

Songs that remind me of that time.

Yeah that song was huge in the UK back then, Badly Drawn Boy was pretty big too. Shared a house in London with a Kiwi bloke who was a dead ringer for him, short, pudgy bloke with a beard and always wore the same knitted beanie so he got the nickname of Badly Drawn Boy or Badly Drunk Boy when he was on the piss.

Beautiful Stranger by Madonna and that awful Last Kiss by Pearl Jam specifically remind me of concert band tour in year 10 when we went to Canberra...

Also the Steal My Sunshine was a flashback - I used to like that song a bit and I haven't even thought of it for quite a while now.

Otherwise 95% of the songs on that clip were turd and invoke no nostaligic response in any way shape or form

...and the only footage that did anything was the little flash of Napster... That was an amazing tool that opened up a world of amazing music (none of which was present in the video!)

1997 holds the highest nostalgia for me as it was the year I finished school and we all were able to drive. That, and Goldeneye… many, many, many hours of stoned Goldeneye. 4 player multiplayer in 'Stack', timed mines and one shot one kill!

I remember 1997 for this album, rocked my world.

St Kilda also made a GF that year after losing their first 4 games.

Crazy times.

Is it sad that I recognise everything in that video clip? (Technically some of that stuff was 97/98 & 2000 though).

1999 was a fun year from memory, with the entire world waiting for the new millenium. My big childhood holiday (to Fiji) happened in 1999. Playing pokemon all day and night. Ran the City2Surf. Was academic excellence top of the class for the 5th year straight. Was voted in as a school prefect for 2000 (my final year of primary school). Won a school-wide 3R's trivia competition that ran over several weeks, won some cool prizes. Went to see granparents at the gold coast in 1999. I remember loving The Mummy, had Korn written on my pencil case, liked the Significant Other album a lot, watched the Alien Series for the first time (my favourite film series to this day), won at Weekend Cross Country for the first time ever. West Coast were on top of the ladder for the 1st half of the season. 1999 Wimbledon was also really competitive from memory, and Lance won his first tour (ugh!). And of course the 1999 NYE celebrations.

1999 was a good year for film in retrospect (one of the best in recent decades, and catering to a diverse range of interests). But as a kid it was just okay, although I remember the October holidays being godly and I must have seen about 4 different movies at the cinema.

The pop charts were a little boring that year, but I remember only like 8 songs hit #1, they were all spending weeks and weeks at the top. Towards the end of the year, it was something like Last Kiss (7 weeks), Mambo #5 (8 weeks) and Blue into 2000 (9 weeks). Come 2000, random songs started to debut at #1, which was almost completely unheard of before.

1997 was more of a nostalgic year for me though. I think I went through a lot of change in that year (turned 9 in 1997). When I remember my childhood, that year has the more cherished memories. All I remember about Radiohead was that the album cover and band/album name was pretty cool, and I loved the No Surprises video. But I probably would have gone over my head at that age. I was obsessed with the Rage top 50 back then, used to wake up early every saturday morning to watch it from No.50 (I did this till 2000). 1997 was dominated by Savage Garden from memory, everyone was obsessed with their latest single at the time (in my age group), and the Backstreet Boys and Aqua were all the pop rage towards the end of 1997.
1997 was basically the year when I finally became aware of everything in the world going on around me.

In between, 1998 I was Dux and won the school cross country, so probably my most successful year ever lol, plus ran my first ever City2Surf in 80mins at age 9, and I have a cherished memory of seeing Titanic at the cinema with mum. And then 2000 we had the olympics, our school week trip to the snow, and I finished primary school. Also read the first 4 Harry Potter books. Late 90s/2000 were quite awesome. In this period I also came first at nippers all but one year.

Come 2000s, puberty started to set in and therefore my gender dysphoria started to take over my life, so while it was cool as well and I went through so much growth, I was secretly miserable for a lot of the decade. Definitly a 90s kid, as the real world definitly hit me come the 2000s.

that clip has made me realise how many knuckle children i fired off to christina aguilera and britney spears. they were both fine back then

steal my sunshine was an amazing song. 99 seemed to produce a large number of 1 hit wonders

Hit Me Baby One More Time is when I really started taking an interest in girls. A 11 year old boy being mesmerizied by a 16 year old in a slutty school outfit. Oh boy.

Those were the days, although my first choices were usually WWF divas, like Sable, Debra, The Kat, Terri, Stephanie. Mmmmm mmmmm.

It's kind of sad how back then i could easily wrestle one out to a paused VHS tape of a skimpily dressed woman, where as now, in the days of the internet and efukt etc, it's no good unless it's a HD video of a Polish amputee with Clown facepaint getting railed from both ends.

I've got a pretty addictive personality and it turned out that surrounding myself with drink and drinkers 24/7 probably wasn't the best idea that I ever had.

i have often thought it would be good to buy into a pub.

then i've quickly realised it's not going to be very positive for overall health.

Thanks for putting that in my head you prick.

I have my revenge with this popular ditty from 1999.

I was 23 in 1999. We won the flag. It was a great year.

Interestingly, I went tp see badly Drawn Boy play in Canada in 2001 and he was shitcaned drunk he basically gave up after about three misfirings attempts at a track.

Being able to take out a dude with the telescopic sight thing while simultaneously pulling a cone.
