Hi folks,

I and my missus rent a flat. Landlord intends to replace our worn out old venetian blinds (in lounge and other front room) with Holland Blinds.

I'm thinking this is VERY cheap (Holland Blinds are those ones that roll up at the top and are spring-loaded) and quite unsightly. Rear rooms, bedrooms, etc, fair enough, but in the lounge? If our Body Corp basically existed I'm sure they'd disallow it as it would certainly lower the sightliness of the frontages.

I'm gonna take him to task about his intent, but first wanted to case the renters out there, and ensure that I wasn't missing some new fad or something.

So if you could use the poll to demonstrate what sort of blinds/curtains/whatever decorate your lounge/living room, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Good subject. Just arrived back home, and the property we are staying at was built in the 80s. Vertical blinds were in then, but they are shockers now. I should have stayed at a rented place, b/c Mrs Knuckles has placed pressure re the blinds. All the quotes were diabolical, so have mercy on your landlord. We have opted for chunky wooden venetians in some rooms, and inside French shutters in other rooms - I will now need to work until I'm 75.
BTW, I have a friend in the security biz who has wired up our house quite well. Twice I sat on my remote panic switch, cops around in less than 5 mins. Offered to install pop-up screens like the banks on some windows - Wife vetoed:(

I'm renting and we have slim-line venetians on all windows. Nice enough, but........they're in my room and the lounge and both look out into the common driveway. For this reason, I can never open them up enough as then people could see in. I'm looking at buying some lace continuous curtains (the rods are already there) in addition to the blinds so I can then let some light into the front of the house without anyone seeing in.

Holland Blinds in the Loungeroom and Mobbs, I wouldn't have it any other way. Very easy to fix, a inch to keep clean and it takes nothing to adjust them.

Venetians are nothing but trouble. I can't stand the things.

Agreed.

I rent & have Hollands, as do anyone else I know who rents.

They work just fine.

Hmm that's interesting.

This is a block of 12 flats, and every other flat has either venetians or fancier venetians.

We'll be the only ones with Holland blinds, and this worries me, as it'll make ours look like the tip-rat flat of the bunch!

Ventians are so very 1970s. And if you think Hollands look cheap and daggy, there is nothing worse thean seeing a set of venetians at half mast, askew and twisted.

I used to rent a place that had venetians in the kitchen. There is nothing harder to clean than a set of venetian blinds covered in a fine film of greasy cooking residue.

It is like trying to build the perfect mousetrap. They got it right with Hollands and yet still keep tinkering with the idea.

Venetians are crap. The rest of the Italians are O.K. though.

If you want to keep light out, holland blinds are the only way to go. I used to live in a second-floor flat which had a westerly aspect on the living room and its one bedroom. Venetians were hopeless. Got a set of mid gray coloured hollands and was able to sleep during the day, as I was working nightshift. Depends what your needs are I suppose.

Why are all blinds named after either European cities or countries? (rhetorical)

Actually I want blinds that'll let light IN, rather than keep it OUT!

But with Holland blinds, either you're in darkness (the flat is already pretty dismally dark), or your open to anybody who wants to have a perve in as they walk past.

With venetians, I can have them half-open, and get light in while still having a semblance of privacy!

Bugger all the fancy stuff. I'd go for the squatter look. An old sheet drapped across the window is good enough for me.
You know my place well, Slax, you've carted many a slab into my crumble abode ... and I think you know that its done its time looking like a squat!

And never mind cleaning them, I have a thingy that does that for me. What's the word? Wife. Yeah, that's it. I have a wife. I use that to clean the blinds. Works wonders ... and cleans the blinds!

Late Breaking News!!!
Landlord was totally amenable when I contacted him today, and will be installing slimline venetians instead! Rags to freakin' riches!

Thanks for your help, folks!

We have blinds in the living room, family room, study and main bedroom. The rest of the bedrooms have the old tinny venetians.
