If a father son pick is not taken the first time around (like with Kane Murpy) do they qualify as a possible father son pick the second time around?
I think so, but I can't see him being picked up by another club so we can probably rookie him if we wanted to. Also, I'm not sure of his status or that of the other topups, but is he also a member of the Academy and if so can't we get him somehow through that?

Cheers Grim, as a Southerner it's always great to hear how the Magoos are going, your write ups are very re-assuring that we have the depth to keep the Bloods in the upper echelon,by the way this is no slight towards Soph & the others that do a great job of keeping us Mexicans informed, much appreciated..GO BLOODS!!

no all good i kinda leave the reviews to grim now i focus more on the Ressies Facebook page now

but i will be making a few trips to canberra so will report from there also
Are you doing the GWS in Canberra game, the one that is the curtain raiser to the seniors - Bulldogs game?

Nice to see the Sydney region so well represented in the team.

Guess we'll get to see some new faces playing for the reserves tomorrow since three of the regulars won't be available.

Reserves power past Tuggeranong - Official AFL Website of the Sydney Swans Football Club

Tuggeranong 0.4 0.4 0.6 1.6 (12)

Goal Kickers:
T. DENNIS-LANE 5, J. LAMB 2, K. MURPHY 2, N. GORDON 2, D. CURRIE , D. ROBINSON , L. ROBERTS-THOMSON , D. MCNEIL , B. HAREN , E. KRUGER , M. SEABY

Best Players: B. SUMNER, L. JOHNSTON, C. MCKAIGUE, N. GORDON, M. SEABY, M. THOMPSON, K. MURPHY

Firstly no one player stood out for 4 quarters.

  • I thought Byron was hot in the first half but faded in the second. He is just so clean in the wet, you'd swear he was playing in the dry. However he didn't use the ball well although I'm prepared to chalk that down to the conditions. Loves his fendoffs although that didn't come off a lot today as Tuggeranong were effective in many of their tackles.
  • Little Lamb (although he's not that little) is a pleasure to watch. He leads hard, he chases and tackles well when not in possession and is (generally) a good set shot. Most importantly, he keeps his feet! Must possess great balance.
  • TDL finished real strong with 4 goals in the last quarter although most were as a result of teammates' good work. But his set shots are fantastic to watch, just so bloody accurate the rest of the team (hello Goodesy!) should take lessons from him.
  • Lewis Johnston had another solid game to backup his effort two weeks ago. They went through him in the first quarter when Tuggeranong had a bit of forward play and it wasn't uncommon to watch him switch play from side to side with ease. Defensive efforts were solid and he linked up well with McKaigue. Also drifted forward noticeably in the 2nd half and was looking for a goal but didn't manage to nail one.
  • Seaby was okay, he got a lot of first hands to the ball but many weren't that effective. Up forward, besides one good lead and mark he struggled to present. Spent a lot more time up forward in the second half which leads me to...
  • Currie went down injured after a great chase and tackle in the 2nd quarter. He managed to return late in the third and proceeded to ruck most of the rest of the game. He also took a nice mark and lead and swung his set shot beautifully from a tight angle to goal.
  • Parker only played the first half and was withdrawn one would imagine as emergency for the seniors. He's a tough unit, loves to take on the tacklers, sometimes to his own detriment like today. Just wasn't his day but he's a handy backup.
  • Nipper was handy today, spent more time in the middle after Parker's withdrawal and his great fitness was an asset as he ran forward of the play a few times to finish off some good work by his mates.
  • Spangher showed up sometime in the first quarter, first down back and then moved up forward shortly after. I'm not sure what his history of playing forward is like but he looked more natural than LRT in this position. Almost took a great speccie on the wing, but just failed to hang onto it on the way down. Moves well and I think if he was fit would have played seniors for us already given our injuries down back.
  • LRT was okay up forward, he kicked the first goal a hurried snap under pressure. He presented well but dropped quite a few marks. A good run I believe he was taken off for the last quarter. I really hope we don't see him in the forwards in the seniors though
  • McNeil a little dynamo in and under as usual, won plenty of free kicks for head highs and in the backs. Ball use could do with a little improvement.
  • McKaigue solid game but I wouldn't award him 3rd best as the Swans site did. Great defensive player, punches a lot and didn't make any mistakes today (tends to get run down a bit but none today that I can recall) Today he showed he's a lot quicker than I've been giving him credit for but his decision making and kicking still leave a lot to be desired IMHO.
  • Haren has dyed his hair with a darkish blackish hue. He didn't have quite have the same impact as he did in the practice matches but noticeably improved in the last quarter with a couple of searching leads. Likes to play on quickly by swinging onto his favoured left. Kicked a sensational goal, twisting his shot around his body - I'm not sure if he meant it but he kicked a similar one a few weeks back so I'm thinking he did! I'm still on his bandwagon.
  • Meredith was really anonymous. A 4th year player, a midfielder in a strong lineup with the assistance of a dominant ruck division, he should be absolutely smashing these games. He just cruises by, gets his requisite number of touches (25+ I would estimate) but doesn't have any real impact on the game. Watch guys playing reserves like Moore or Malceski or Hanners or even Tim Schmidt when he was around, they would dominate these games and I don't remember Meredith doing it even once.
  • Kruger was a link player through the middle early on but finished the game in defence. Strangely though it was during this period that he managed 3 consecutive shots on goal, all on the harder side for a left footer and managed to nail the last one. Can get caught out at times with poor reading of the play
  • Otten, still haven't seen anything from him yet. Playing in defence again, deeper than usual, didn't see much of it.

Kane Murphy (#53) was the best toppie - a real crash and bash player reminiscent of McGlynn but with one important exception I think he's a great kick of the ball. Also earns lots of head high free kicks just due to his short stature alone. I would have had Mitch Thompson (#52) as the 2nd best just ahead of James Brain (#50). Daniel Robinson (#55) kicked a beautiful curling goal and took a nice mark but he looks the youngest of the lot. Didn't see much of Tim Wales (#54) or Nathan Kenny (#49).

I think next week is Lewis Johnston's best chance of a debut, probably for Everitt. I feel LRT needs at least one more week in the reserves so it's LJ's opportunity as the third tall defender. Although, with Barry Hall out the Dogs don't really have much of a tall forward line.

Oh and Nick Malceski was one of the runners today which was a good sight. He was quite vocal out there too, giving plenty of encouragement to the younger players.

Oops didn't mean to write such a long post but there you go. Rant over.

His foot speed is an interesting topic, I've been trying to gauge it for a few weeks now. Because he's such an inside player he doesn't often get a chance to utilise it but on a few occasions where the Swans have been on a quick break he's more than prepared to try and around his man. So I think while not Jetta or Rohan express I would say he's quicker than a Moore or Bird and I'd probably back him in a foot race against Hanners too. A more relevant aspect of his skill set would be his quickness of mind, he was caught holding the ball at least twice today due to indecision. I'm sure it will improve as he gets used to the pace of higher grades of footy.

Foot skills are also hard to gauge when he's in heavy traffic a lot but watching him kick for goal a few times I would say he's better than average. A few things which I haven't had the chance to observe is he was apparently a good overhead mark as a junior and was also a more than competent forward. He hasn't had a chance to play there much yet.
