Well just got back from Woodville Oval where I saw Norwood v West Adelaide in the Reserves. Was a terrific match, finally saw a hard, skillful and committed Norwood side.
I arrived 5 minutes late, and Norwood already had 3 goals on the board. So I don’t know who kicked these early majors.

John Meesen played at full forward for almost the entire day and was very good. His first quarter was relatively quiet, however he did set up a goal with a beautiful pass that hit a leading forward on the chest. He kicked two goals in the second quarter, one from a brilliant snap when surrounded by two opponents. The other was from a good strong lead and he converted from about 40 metres. He came out after half time and kicked a goal in the opening few minutes. His leading was good; he started in the goalsquare and lead hard and strong and gave the midfielders a good target. He took another strong grab in the third quarter but kicked it on the full. So he had at least three goals to three quarter time.

In the last quarter he set up two goals, one was a left foot kick to Pfeiffer in the corridor, the other a handball over the top to a lose man in the square. He was then instructed by the runner to obviously push up the ground and then that’s when the old Meese was back. He had about 5 possessions in the last 15 minutes, and in about the 5 ruck contests he was involved in he clearly won all, he really dominated in the ruck as he should. Gave the midfielders first use, and another pleasing aspect was that he pushed wide after the ruck battles and got a few clearances. Then with about 20 seconds left he pushed forward, called for the ball and was on the end of a short pass. Siren sounded, and Meese drilled his fourth goal of the afternoon 45 metres out.

Overall he was very threatening, they often had to push a man back to block his space, however it didn’t do much good as he finished with about 15 possessions, 5+ marks, 4 goals and about 5 goal assists. However in saying all that, I still believe he needs to be developed as a ruckman, as he looked more comfortable when moved into the middle in the last term. He dominated in the ruck, had half a dozen possessions, and drifted forward to kick a goal.

Darren Pfeiffer was BOG in my opinion. He was everywhere; just absolutely dominated all day long. He had about 20 possessions to half time, and continued the hard work in the second half. He took at least 3 brilliant contested marks, all that shouldn’t be possible for someone his size. He ran hard, was too strong for his opponent and just was incredibly classy. He played on the ball for the entire day, clearly his beat position. He’s been used as a forward and a backman in the league team, but he’s definitely suited to playing in the guts. He is very evasive, dodged and weaved the opposition all day and was very damaging through the middle. Finished with about 35 possessions, 10 marks and had countless clearances. This guy is our best youngster; he is going to be one heck of a player.

Chad Gibson played full back on Adrian Bonaddio, and it’s safe to say, “Bonners” is gone after Chad completely destroyed him. I don’t recall Bonaddio kicking one goal; such was the effect Gibbo had. He gave away 3 pretty careless frees, but you’ve got to admire his attack on the footy. He had a few bone crunching tackles, took a few great contested marks, including the mark of the day in the last quarter. As I’ve said before he is incredibly quick, and can get to a contest in a few seconds. Good performance by Gibbo, hopefully he’ll stay on next year.

And finally, Jesse Aish was brilliant while playing in defence. He had about 25 possessions, and worked as hard as anyone. Most of his possessions were pin-point passes and he fed the forwards and midfielders all day long. Took a few great grabs and finished off the day with a great goal from 50. He reads the play well, is very well built and had good endurance. On the back of his last few weeks, I think we should be keeping a very close eye on him.

Skipworth - was played in a centre/roving role and got plenty of it, probably give him BOG. Had a lot of inside 50s' and used the ball very well. He and McGregor combined quite a lot. He took a pretty heavy knock in the 2nd quarter, but got up and continued to play well.

McGregor - Took a lot of marks at CHF, he played up the ground a bit as well but mostly around the forward 50. Is a contender to put his hand up for the Prelim.

Vince - I didn't see him much in the first, probably because he was in defence where the ball wasn't! But he ended up at half forward and kicked a couple of goals, also another who used his disposals well.

I think Pfeiffer needs to earn the trust of the coaches back before he can even enter the calculations of getting a game.

Boy has some REAL talent but I hope he realises that there is more to being a successful AFL footballer than just talent. Or we could have another Chris Ladhams on our hands

Did you see the picture in ‘Main Game’ on Friday; they had a picture of Crows training and Pfeiffer was evident, which is a great sign. Good to see him back with the Crows because he is a special talent. He has so many strengths. He can rack up a heap of the ball; he had 25 possessions in his comeback match against North, and had about 35 touches today. He has terrific evasive skills and can somehow dodge and escape opponents when you think he’s in trouble. He has good foot skills, which probably need improving, but he can kick on both sides, his left foot is actually very accurate and can travel a fair way. Then his main strength which is his overhead marking, his aerial skills are just phenomenal. He takes a few contested marks every game and is therefore very hard for other midfielders to match up on. He’s also very courageous and extremely hard at the ball. He is an exceptional youngster who will be a great AFL player no doubt at all.

In regards to Meesen playing forward next year, I still have my doubts. There’s no doubt he has the potential to be able to play as a key forward, but he is still a long way off. He was recruited as a ruckman, and that’s what he does best. He took about 5 marks inside forward 50 today which is a great return; however he looks more comfortable playing as a ruckman. When we went into the ruck late into the game with 20 minutes remaining, he dominated. He won every centre bounce, fed the midfielders, and also worked hard around the ground and collected many possessions. Whilst rucking he also drifted forward and kicked a goal. I know that his best chance to make it with the Crows next season may be as a key forward, but I do not want to see him used somewhere that goes against his development and the position he is naturally suited to.

I just remembered a bit of play that Skipworth did in the first quarter - he somehow got out of a pack of players - 3 of which were Glenelg and it would have been brilliant had he of kicked the goal on the run but he missed from about 25.

But he was fantastic today and that example (minus the behind) showed how dominant he was on the ground.

I posted this in the Kenny, Vince and Skippy thread, but this seems to be where all the action is so here's what I saw of them today:

I kept a close eye on Bernie. He started off slowly, only had 2 handballs for the first qtr playing down back on Brad Sugars. He picked up in the 2nd qtr, where he played in the midfield on Marcus Burdett and Tom Redden, collecting 3 kicks, 3 handballs and 2 marks. He also slotted a goal. His 3rd qtr was the best (as it has been in previous weeks). He was switching between the midfield and half forward and managed 3 kicks, 7 handballs, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 2 hit outs and a goal. His last qtr was a little quiet, he had 1 kick, 2 handballs, 1 mark and 1 tackle. So overall he was pretty good, think he may have dislocated his finger in the last qtr.

His stats total in the end were 7 kicks, 14 handballs, 5 marks, 2 tackles, 2 hitouts and 2 goals

Skippy played really well, was probably one of the best (if not the best) on groud. He would have picked up 20+ posessions. He played in the midfield and kicked 1 goal and 1 behind.

Kenny had a solid game. He was mostly used up forward, but played down back in the 3rd qtr and had a brief stint in the ruck. He pulled up his socks in the last qtr, literally, and kicked 1 goal and 1 behind.
