I do agree with you here though. I hated my last job and the person I became during it despite the pay rise (it’s difficult to know how much of a rise , but it was a $15k more in my base salary with the penalties /overtime also being more ....), to the point where I would’ve forfeited the pay rise and even copped a drop in pay relative to the job before that just to be happy again.

Yeah been here six months now. It comes and it goes, sometimes it's great, and some of the people I work with are great, but others aren't and they're the ones who can make it a real downer sometimes.

Oh of course, but that's why you get paid more, and the pressure can be shit sometimes.

It's not always just 40 hours either.. ;)

Time flies. I’m sorry to hear about the last part but can unfortunately relate. Colleagues /the work environment can make such a difference in either direction , arguably moreso than the work itself.

100% the environment is probably the biggest struggle, along with the culture of the office in general. A few of the newer employees have lunch every week to vent/discuss any issues we've been having, which we started doing a month ago, and it's really helped a lot, but it also underlines that I'm not alone/imagining it which in some ways weirdly makes it worse.

Yeah, obviously I had my concerns and I was apprehensive about considering how great the culture was at my previous workplace, and how much I enjoyed it there.

During my interview I asked them about the culture and they said it used to be pretty bad, but since the new CEO has come in, it's increased a lot. My mate also referred me, and I would like to think that he wouldn't refer me if it was a terrible place to work. He seems pretty happy and is enjoying it. Everyone I have spoken to there, two managers, HR, and my mate seem to be quite happy. Obviously, everybody has their own experience.

I guess it's high risk/high reward.

That sucks mate. Will you look for new work? I guess that's one way of dealing with it, at least it's being discussed. But if it's just venting, nothing is really getting solved then I am assuming?

I loved going to work. People I worked with were great and everyone got along really well, and most of the time, we had a lot of fun.

There was a point when it was absolutely shocking and I'd wake up on a Monday thinking how long until Saturday. But thankfully they listened to what was wrong and fixed it.

I’m glad the lunch debriefs have helped. Luckily I was efficient at the actual job so was able to leave the area for a coffee or lunch date at least once a week - and that was amazing. I also found ranting to friends outside my department and even outside my field (in real life and here) helpful too- more than they’ll ever know. As great as it is to not be alone, I think I also understand why it paradoxically makes it worse in another way. There’s that sense of helplessness that comes with knowing that it’s a cultural rather than purely an individual issue , and change (if it occurs at all) may be slow due to the enormity of the issues. Hang in there , and I hope that either change for the better is feasible or that you can move onto something better (as I did last Monday :) )

Funnily enough I asked that exact question and the CFO told me the same thing.

Really not sure. I keep telling myself it's just things I can improve on, but at the end of the day if I'm not happy then I'm not sure if it's worth it. I might try and force through to the middle of the year and reasses as that'll have been a year. Plus the wifey and I are going to Europe for a proper honeymoon in April and I'd be in negative leave for a bit haha.

I guess the only way I am gonna find out is with time.

Yeah no point staying in a job if you're unhappy. You become toxic and it makes you bitter. As soon as you know it, you need to try and either change your mindset, or change your job.

After your break you'll probably come back feeling refreshed and maybe you'll feel re-energised or something. Not saying it's a definite, but there might be a chance.

I can most definitely assure I did not go to a private school. My school fees were $600 a year or something.

At best I was raised in a middle, middle-class household.

I had a shit blue collar job too mate. I worked at Maccas for nearly 8 years and was unemployed for 6 months until I found the job I just left.
 
My last job in Victoria I had an exit interview. I knew I was moving to Queensland and already had a job there so nothing to lose. The school sucked and the principal was an arseh*le and I told them that in no uncertain terms.
