Handle it professionally and respectfully would be my advice. Chances are you'll want a reference from them at least once in the next 5-10 years.

Well my manager was made redundant and now won't return calls/emails for references. I lost my best bloody reference ffs

See what happens when the dust settles and you may need one on the horizon (this is where LinkedIn is useful...basically anyone who knows you will add you unless they actively despise you. If you're connected with them, you can always get in touch in the future).

If it's still an issue, you have a good excuse why you haven't chosen your manager at that employer as a reference and you have your pick of alternatives from there.

It's been 12 months ffs :)

I have Linkedin and only one person I deal with at work has added me. They despise me

I'm looking forward to the next installment of this series "First day at new workplace"

"Oh yes, they gave me a standing ovation on the first day....said i was the greatest worker they have ever seen. Free BJs on the celebration of my first week there. I got kinda sick of the knob polishing"

I think people are being a bit harsh. It's not a two month temping job. When you have a decent job (e.g. not one where you go to the toilet and never return or stop answering phone calls), taking the step to resign is a pretty big one. He was obviously a good and valued worker at his previous gig (lol at the widespread confusion at how someone could leave on good terms but still require an immediate escort out of the building...says a bit. I thought school holidays were over).

I mean, FMD. The big topics here (besides this) at the moment are:
  • Subtle racist and sexist things you do
  • Awkward flirting stories
  • MAFS!!!
  • Things that shit me
  • Valentine's Day
  • Things you don't understand
  • Terrible fashion
  • Best nightspots in Melbourne
  • Song contest
  • Infomercial products that have become famous.
Geez. Sorry if Cruyff has wasted your time. You can go back to figuring out how to achieve world peace on this board now.

talk smack about GD again and I will fight you in ANY carpark of your choosing

Linkedin, I can't do it. It's a great place to network with people who give themself the most ridiculous job titles in the hope of impressing a stranger.

My wife started up as a fitness instructor about 12 months ago and I've been trying to explain to her that there is no point starting a business like that if you're not going to go on LinkedIn to say that you're the Founder, CEO and Managing Director.

In all seriousness, there's a staggering number of complete w***ers on there, but it's useful to have, just for when you need to get in touch with someone whom you're not planning to interact with in the future for any other reason.

Don't forget Philanthropist! Does make keeping in touch with previous bosses and colleagues for future references a bit easier. Killer is when you have had like a job for over 5 years and your previous reference has died so now you have no references and look like a liar.

'Yes but what do you actually do?'

Pfft, LinkedIn.

The only way to make it as a fitness instructor is to 'gram your way to the top. Maximum hashtags, minimum clothes. Also helps to "@" companies you like whose products you buy. Apparently.

Nah, they couldn't, and I knew they couldn't. As good as my former employer was, their salary was not fantastic unless you were in upper management.

Absolutely. Think people are just being keyboard warriors saying "is that all?" etc. I would love to know if the same people have been offered such a payrise when changing jobs. I highly doubt it.

Ended up being $18k too. It's $450 extra a fortnight, so it's not like it's a pittance.

I got an extra $20k the last time I changed jobs lol. But now I'm not too happy where I am so it's not always about the money.

Didn’t you switch jobs just a few months ago? That sort of pay rise is awesome , but I’m sorry to hear about the last part :(

so it's not always about the money.
I do agree with you here though. I hated my last job and the person I became during it despite the pay rise (it’s difficult to know how much of a rise , but it was a $15k more in my base salary with the penalties /overtime also being more ....), to the point where I would’ve forfeited the pay rise and even copped a drop in pay relative to the job before that just to be happy again.
