In preparation of the upcoming VGA Live Action trailer with more gameplay influence that will show off Resistance 3 I thought I'd chuck up a thread for what is looking to be my no.1 MP game in 2011.

First off a few things that fans of the series will love to know. Insomniac are listening to the fans and through that are bringing back from Fall of Man. First thing is the weapon wheel will be back, so no 2 weapons only, you'll be able to keep each weapon you pick up and choose what you want when you want for specific situations.

The return of full campaign co-op also comes back. Not only will it be 2 player split screen co-op as with Fall of Man (allowing for multiple PSN sign ins too) but it will be online compatible as well.

60 Player MP won't be returning with a number smaller than that still being worked on. The competitive MP might be taking a turn for the COD, they mention "progression based MP" so I'm guessing that will be a leveling up system similar to COD.

More shall be revealed at the VGA's this weekend.

Story Summary (Resistance 2 spoilers):
First of all, the main protagonist in Resistance 3 is Joseph Capelli, the Sentinel who (HUGE RESISTANCE 2 SPOILERS HERE… if you haven’t played it yet, go buy a Greatest Hits copy now!) was forced to kill Nathan Hale at the end of R2. Capelli was dishonorably discharged, and four years later is living in hiding with his wife, Susan, and son, Jack, along with other survivors in the town of Haven, Oklahoma. He’s given up fighting, and is now just trying to hide and survive the Chimeran death squads that roam the planet. But when Dr. Malikov arrives with an opportunity to deliver a blow to the Chimera, Capelli embarks on a road trip to New York City. Resistance 3 is a tale of Capelli’s heroic journey across the country as he encounters the remnants of humanity left in the aftermath of the brutal invasion.

No 2-8 player co-op really shits me, some serious hours put into that on R2.
Yeah that style of co-op was pretty damn good. But it sounds like Insomniac are going for more of a focus on the competitive MP being the thing that will keep you coming back and honestly if it's ANYTHING like Fall of Man I will be coming back for days.:)

Especially so if Somerset comes back (like Morell said was rumoured) salivation central right there!!!

I missed the boat on FOM multiplayer.

I hope they dont change the competitive MP to much from R2, there was nothing better than the chaos of 60 players going for it online.

I actually liked Resistance 2 competitive online, especially the 60 player online chaos. Biggest online battles I've seen.

The Co-Op campaign looks good and will probably be the main reason for why I'll get the game but I will miss R2's Co-Op which was also great.

I hope they keep the regenerating health. Can't stand health bars in an FPS.

Awesome to get a release date.

And if that and the previous Live Action trailer prove anything, it's that there needs to be a Resistance movie! Looking at you Battle: LA to bring that.:D

Good to see some new weapons too.

I agree, can get very epic. Would love to see a 60-player without the teams - that would be chaos :D

R2 is still going strong online too, must admit when I play R2 I basically only play competitive, I've played very little single player.

Speaking on GAF, James Stevenson, Community Manager for the developer said, “I think… and we have to be careful about discussing exactly where we are in dev… but we totally have a lot of content done (2 years of dev so far) w/ a lot of polishing to go.
“The game is playable start to finish on disc, which is pretty insane for an Insomniac game w/ this much time left.”
The trailer looked as though you could play it now, and they still have several months to go for polish

He also discussed the multiplayer on the PS Blog, saying: “It’s new, improved. It’s a more focused experience, progression-based, and takes place in maps located around the world.”

Regarding the sledgehammer in the trailer.
It completely plays into the story why he ends up in the Arena with only a sledgehammer… stay tuned!

If they bring back One Hit, Unofficial online multiplayer (so you can customise the game types) and Somerset, then my life will be over for another 3 years.

R:FoM is STILL the best online shooter I have played.

I didn't realise at the time because I wasn't a CoD player but the way the lobby system worked was utterly brilliant. Things like - "Press square to start", once there was enough people voting the game started, no automatic jumping into games. Text chat in lobbies - no need for ****ing PSN messages.

The ability to customise the available weapons, grenades, the map et al for online gaming was critical to its success. You could join lobbies with game types like:

"1 hit CTF Carbine/Snipe" or "30% Health 40mm" or "Shotguns only". It sounds like something quite minor but what it did was create little cliques and clans of players that specialised in one thing or another. You could also make it so games lasted for hours and hours and hours, I had quite a few 350+ kill games.

I was predominately a CTF 1 Hit Somerset player, which meant each night I was playing with people that I recognised and got to know quite well, I had my friends (that I now play CoD with) and my enemies - ****ing ]S[ clan, that social side of things is completely missing in other online shooters IMO. It takes something like BigFooty or the website witts is on to get close to it.

All of that plus I think I could count the amount of errors I got from trying to join mates games on one hand over 3 years of playing. No host migration errors, no lost connection errors and .. I know this is hard to believe for the CoD generation - NO LAG! yep, I played in games of 8v8 with Brits, Yanks, Japanese, Aussies, Kiwis, whatever, and never experienced any detrimental lag. In fact lag was considered an advantage! Grro would dominate.

Jeez I miss it :(

EDIT - and Glitching! there were entire glitching communities and thats all they did, hunting them down was awesome fun and learning a new glitch was also pretty cool...

MMMMMMM Nostalgia brews with such a post.:(

And it wasn't even the fact you could get 8 vs 8 against anyone in the world without lag, it was that you could get 20 vs 20 without any lag what so ever! I remember when you would see the odd bit of lag, it was so hilarious because you had no idea what this thing was and you would blame them for cheating because they did actually get an advantage out of it!:o

The glitching, well that was awesome until the ***** started using it as a way to kill you from very specific spots. I did love taking a trek around the outside of the maps around the mountains and such though.:D

1 Hit Kill CTF at Somerset was the absolute most epic shit of all time. On top of that there was Shotty's at the Bus Yard and Rooftops. And the 40 man battles at...damn I forget the map, but it's the one with that big circular structure in the middle.

I think something that is very underrated about Fall of Man was that it was solely AU servers for, what was it, 2-4 months? of the game being out. That really made an almost family type of game, I can remember seeing so many people that I had played the night before or some such. From that I've even got a best mate out of it, which is insane! While the Worldwide added more players, personally I felt it lost a little bit of heart from that. Still an amazing and epic game and if you looked a the game start Country you could generally find the Aussie games, but still did lose a little something for me.

While i never played FoM online, both your comments are right on the money about locals and having more fun getting to know (in a way) and play with the same people, whatever the game/games may be (had the same experience with MAG and Socom Confrontation) it's always better.

I loved Resistance 2 co-op. I buy games all the time but always lose interest in them after a few days. Resistance 2 is the only game i really got obsessed with. Really looking forward to number 3

I'm a fan of the series, and looking forward to seeing where they've taken the thrid instalment.
Every time one of these games has been released, they've lifted the bar. This should be good.

slightly off topic but I picked up Resistance 2 last week to get a feel for this series before 3 comes out and I've got to say that the SP is pretty ordinary. I read IGN's review before picking it up and I can only assume that I played a different game to that reviewer

Pretty sure everyone would agree with you there. Resistance 2 was awful, the only good thing was co-op and even that got old after a while.

Anyone have any news or updates on this?
Noting much as of yet. Wait until Killzone 3 is released and I'd predict you'll see plenty more news on Resistance 3.
