The 'Pies took a pasting as expected at the 'G on New Years Eve. In all honesty a better match up would have been the Bombers vs Carlton, giving Essendon a bit of a chance to show what they could have done in last year's finals series.

Being a Collingwood supporter myself, I am rather dissapointed with the entirely lethargic effort Collingwood put in.

There were little signs of light...

Michael Clark's effort in the first quarter was quite good... despite the fact Fevola kicked 3 goals on him. But while his work ethic looks good, and he has reasonabvle kicking and marking, he seems a tad too slow and unco-ordinated to hold down anything but the third tall in an opposition's forward line.

Mal Michael seems to have lost his spring from a couple of season's ago (he has had terrible back problems)... but with his play turning more atacking, I can see a new position for Mal, away from the key defensive posts... I believe he should be a marking target, but in the running mould. A sort of cross between Nigel Smart and Ben Harrison.

Mal across the Half Back or Half Forward Flanks, or even the wing would add some liveliness and marking to this region.

Simon Prestigiacomo is similar to Clark... maybe slightly better defensive skills but very poor disposal.

Mark Richardson has shown glimpses of brilliance at the club for 8 years now, but never taken the step to really cementing a spot in any one position. Ands as he ages, there seems little chance of him ever achieving.

Steven McKee played occasional roles in defence last night and for Richmond last year, but he remains the pies only ruck option (Brad Smith has never developed in 3 years of Monkhorst injuries, so I don't like his chances).

Crosisca and especially Brown are getting slower and will no longer be able to run out full matches... and neither will be able to take opponents quite like they used to.

And recruits like Nick Stone (18), Danny Roach (17), and even Josh Fraser need a year or two to develop...

So much for Malthouse building the defense first, eh?

With all the hopes, expectations and draft concessions...

Collingwood just doesn't seem to have a defence capable of taking them far up the ladder... a result between 11 and 15 seeming the most likely.

But they are a young side, and as the above mentioned players, as well as Lockyer, Betheras, Davis, Shaw, Oborne, Wasley (expect bigger things this year) develop to give older players support, there is hope.

But Buckley, Burns (underrated), Williams, the Roccas, Tarrant will shouldfer too much of the burden this year.

Maybe Ricky Olarenshaw can be our (sleezy) smokey for rising the ladder (j/k)

A 15,000 crowd and a non-event. Must've been depressing for the players to spend the first 3 hours of the biggest new years of their lives playing in the wizard cup.

As for the people who had nothing better to do than attend....

yep and carlton won their first wooden spoon 2 years later and what a great moment id was round 20 ,2002 when joffa brought a giant spoon to the game to stick it up the carlton scums

BigFooty had only been going a matter of weeks at the time ... a mere acorn. Probably had about 10 members at the time and the thread would have taken a week to disappear off the front page. LOL

I wasn't around then but a check of who registered in 1999 wouldn't take long.

Haha BigFooty actually had 4 registered members at the time and I guess a few guests lurking.

Fev's 12 goals would have created a bigger stir today.

hehe 4 members... Sounds pretty lonely huh? Not much of a discussion. How do I see who joined when for intrest sake?

Your hero, Joffa. What an icon. Truly representative of Collingwood supporters. Who else do you idolise, Chopper Read? Or maybe Mr Baldy?
