In the NFL the numbers of club champions are retired after the player retires. Which numbers from your club would be retired if this was practiced in the AFL? For Essendon 5 (Hird), 10 (Coleman) and 31 (Fletcher).

Off the top of my head, for the Crows it would be

32 ([PLAYERCARD]Mark Ricciuto[/PLAYERCARD]),
23 ([PLAYERCARD]Andrew McLeod[/PLAYERCARD]),
26 ([PLAYERCARD]Mark Bickley[/PLAYERCARD]),
9 ([PLAYERCARD]Tyson Edwards[/PLAYERCARD]/[PLAYERCARD]Rory Sloane[/PLAYERCARD]),
34 ([PLAYERCARD]Ben Hart[/PLAYERCARD])
36 ([PLAYERCARD]Simon Goodwin[/PLAYERCARD])
3 (Darren Jarman)
13 ([PLAYERCARD]Taylor Walker[/PLAYERCARD] if and when he retires soon)

You could make a case for a bunch of others, but those guys are our most significant long-serving players who retired from the Crows (Tony Modra #6 and Eddie Betts #18 are absolute champions but finished their careers elsewhere - does that count?)

Where does it end? That would be the Crows retiring a number every 3 to 4 years. It wouldn’t be long before Crows are regularly wearing numbers in the 50s and 60s.

If you use a high threshold of only the very greatest players to have pulled on the club jumper, I'd go with Mark Ricciuto and Andrew McLeod - can't split them.

Ted Whitten once said that Gary Ablett Snr, in the discussion for GOAT, was the second best player to wear number 5 for Geelong.

So 5 for the cats surely. Probably 14 too.

The Crows should retire number 6.. everyone who has worn that after Modra has failed in it.

I do think there are overseas trends we can implement but this one I don't agree with. Numbers 50+ are pretty ugly imo.
For retired greats like Dusty and Hawkins, I think it's fair to rest 4 and 26 for 2-3 years as tribute but continue the jumper number legacy afterwards.

Once Harley Reid finishes his 16th season at West Coast, #9. Ben Cousins, Nic Naitanui & Harley Reid from 1995-2040.

I like our cultural element of handing over numbers to players to carry on a tradition rather than retiring it. It also represents "no player is bigger than the club" or that there can't be a future champion better. You can still recognise player greats and their numbers through this.

The Swans tend to rest numbers for a year or two after ‘champions’ retire. Number 14 after Paul Kelly retired, before being given to [PLAYERCARD]Craig Bird[/PLAYERCARD]. 12 after JPK retired before being given to Gus Sheldrick. 23 is currently unused.

The longest temporary retirement was to number 37. A big fuss was made of giving it to Elijah Taylor. That didn’t work out well. The following season it was quietly allocated to Corey Warner.
