Interestingly worded statement from Melbourne United. No contract offered and currently no list spot available, but sounds like they haven't ruled things out if White develops ok. The other issue with the rumoured signing is development players need to be under 25.

Melbourne United can confirm that recently retired Collingwood AFL player Jesse White has been training with the Club since finishing his season with Pies earlier this month.

White began training with the team after he expressed an interest to train with the team at the Club’s new facilities in Moorabbin.

White was a keen junior basketballer in Queensland and has connections to Melbourne United shooting guard Chris Goulding before beginning his career in the AFL.

Melbourne CEO Vince Crivelli said the club had filled its 11 roster spots for the season and at this stage no formal agreement or contract offer had been made to White.

“Jesse is enjoying the opportunity to be amongst the team at an exciting time for Melbourne United and the NBL” he said.

“He is an exceptional athlete who enjoys basketball and I’m excited to see how develops with us. We will support him and any other elite athlete who may wish to consider switching to basketball at NBL level”.

“There are a number of athletes in various codes, particularly AFL, who have a pedigree in our sport and still have a love for the game.”

Development players now permitted to play in all home and away games and age limit rises from 24 to 25.

Apparently there is an offer from an NBL team on the table for Jesse

What's that skippy ...

Not sure you can jsut walk into an NBL career after 10 years in the AFL, there are some nba standard players playing there now. Interesting to see how it goes, hope for him it works out.

Pretty sure they are only talking about a development spot on the list - and probably the vaguely worded statement suggests that Melbourne are even seeing if they could use one of those spots on him, rather than waste a spot on the main list.
If he is able to get one of those spots (although as posted above the age limit is 25yo - as of last season), then he wouldn't be expecting much game time, if any, but just the club looking outside the box at a guy who is a professional athlete.

I think its great for Jesse to try this after football, and hopefully he gets out of it what he's looking for, and for the club its no different to AFL clubs using Cat B Rookie spots on ex-basketballers (or americans).

Good on him for having a crack. The fact that they are even considering him in any way is a credit to him. He's always been super athletic for his size. Moving the way he did at 197cm was always his greatest asset.

I assume he would be playing at guard at that height. Maybe small forward at a pinch if he really hustled.

He had talent. Maybe if he hadve been with us as a 17 -18 year old he would’ve been a better player. Something wasn’t right with him but he showed talent in patches.

That almost sounds like a vote of confidence for our development program.

Tyrone Vickery Mark II, seriously could have been a very good second key forward like Vickery, but for whatever reason he didn't develop an overhead mark or ability to kick a goal when needed.

He wasn't a bad recruit from Sydney, we needed to develop an understudy for Cloke to take the pressure he felt as the dominant key forward.

Did Sydney get him as an 18 year old? He was probably a poor fit for them as they had a strong side back in 05 06.

Better player than Vickery.

Not sure what that says, but says something
