The first 6 showdowns where both Port and us won 3 apiece are being judged this week to be announced before the weekend’s showdown for the retrospective best on field. Is this a point of discussion? I do recall the 98 2nd showdown where McLeod and Robran went to town on Port and the 97 showdown we won where Troy Bond was sensational.

In Showdown 4 Peter Vardy kicked 7 goals in a big win for us.

To be fair Tony Modra kicked 7 as well in the first one but we lost.

In those early Showdowns Matt Connell always performed quite well, showdown 2 Brett James was likely BOG

Josh Francou was also really good in Port wins.

I assume the panel going back and re-watching the games?

I remember being at Showdown I and it was awful losing that one.

Was sick in bed for Showdown II, but from memory we came back from a fair margin on a very wet day, with Darren Jarman kicking an outstanding goal from way out in the last.
Yeah I was at Showdown I and losing was like someone died.

I went to Showdown II with school mates, one of my all time favourite games. Copped shit from port supporters all day, started giving it back with interest once Bond took the mark. I was probably lucky to not get snotted (and that he didn’t miss).

McLeod Bond Vardy with 3 of the biggest clutch goals in the dying stages.

I too as also at that 1st showdown. It was very depressing.....

I do remember it being reported on the Friday before that we had 7 first choice players out with injury (not using that as an excuse).

I cant recall all of them who were out but I know that D Jarman & Rehn were missing .

Tom Gilligan was our ruckman that day.....

EDIT:

I have found the 1st showdown side and compared that to the 1st final we played against WC later that year:

Missing from 1st showdown (but played in the final vs WC)

Connell
Ellen
Goodwin
Jarman
Pitman
Rehn
Robran
Sampson

Missing from final vs WC (but played in the 1st showdown)

Gilligan
B.James
McCartney
Ormond-Allen
Standfield
Tregenza
Brent Williams
Ricciuto (injured)

Do we win if we had everyone available???

Given that we went down by only 11 points, reckon we would have....

Brownlow votes in that 1st showdown:

Mead 3
Bruer 2
Lade 1

And.....in showdown #5 (round 6, 1999), David Gallagher got 1 Brownlow vote........

I look at the 1997 to around 2006 era for Crows and Port sides and wonder why we collectively didn't win more flags.

They were both pretty good sides.

Given the number of preliminary finals played in between 2001 and 2007 by both sides to come up with one flag is pretty short.

Here is a chance to relive Showdown II.

My memory is hazy but if I were to have a guess
I - Lyle
II - Jarman or B James (James kept us in it & Jarman turned the game around
III - Francou
IV - Vardy or Roo
V - Bickley or Roo
VI - Francou

I think they announce 3 on Saturday night and 3 at our Showdown

I think Roo should win in IV, back in those days a "lazy" bag of 7 by Vardy, was nothing too big.

In fairness to Vardy, would be interesting to know when those goals were scored?

In the 90s, players were kicking a dozen plus lol.

We would never have won any showdowns if not for Brett James.

Dragged us off the canvas to give us our first win.

Every win since then draws inspiration from Brett James.

Rucci has had his say, he's gone;

I - Mead
II - James
III - Kingsley
IV - Ricciuto
V - Bickley
VI - Francou

would give Roo 4 & Francou 4, Gray still leading with 5
