VFL is taking over.
With our season now officially over, let's review our season.
Personally, I feel uncomfortable and slightly indifferent. The way I feel about our season as a whole closely resembles the feelings I'd have dancing with my sister.
To win 14 games out of 23 with a percentage of 137 to boot, that's good. To win eight games by 70+ points, that's excellent.
To miss the eight and only beat one finalist is extremely poor.
To win the VFL premiership on the back of 14 straight wins is exciting and creates plenty of room for optimism.
In hindsight, I think we could potentially consider this season as a success if it leads to the ultimate success in the next five years. Hopefully we can look back at this underperforming season as a season with plenty of learnings that lead to future success.
Plenty of teams over the years have had similar seasons to the one we've just had.
In 2006, Geelong were premiership favourite after round three. They failed to make finals that year but for them it was a season of brilliance mixed in with some extremely poor, underwhelming results... much like our 2025 season. That season Geelong's VFL team made the Grand Final. They had built a strong core group (much like us at the moment) and what followed their 2006 season is now the stuff of legend.
I've mentioned this previously, but our current group and performances continues to remind me of Hawthorn before they became a superpower under Clarkson. In 2007, they were building something special with a young, super impressive core group combined with some ageing stars. They shot through in 2008 earlier than expected (this doesn't compare to us) but then between 2009 to 2010 they returned to being an a slightly above average team which is where we're currently at.
I dare to dream and there's no reason with our VFL success that we can't strive to become a powerhouse over the next few seasons. Attracting a couple of established very good players will certainly help.
As a Bulldogs supporter, I've often wondered how it would feel to win seven games in a row. I've never experienced it. Supporters of every other club would know what it feels like to wake up every morning knowing you've won at least seven in a row. I'm hoping one day we can all experience what that feels like. That might not be high up on everyone's wish list, but it's certainly high up on mine. Mainly because I don't think you can be considered a powerhouse without having achieved that.
Wish list:
1. Premiership
2. Minor premiership
3. Top four
4. Seven wins in a row
I'm not sure which one of those we manage to achieve first.
