What was far more disappointing was the amount of goals we conceded in a short period of time after that.

It would be too harsh to pin all that on Harwood but it was a pivotal moment in the game. The momentum was lost, the belief was eroded, and the flood gates opened.

Must admit to being more pessimistic about our future than I have been for a while.

I hope I am proven wrong.

Chin up, Ceebee, the club is in good young hands. But they are young hands. They are also tired hands at the moment. And there are not enough hands to hold the responsibility of an entire club. Next year more young hands will hold the club up as well. They'll get to here, they just have to grow into the role.

We have an abundance of key forwards who are what some might describe as list cloggers. I wonder if it would be worth while trialling Justin Clarke in the reserves to see if he has any natural flair as a forward? If it doesn't work out he's better for the experience. If it does then we can clear the deck with all the not quite good enough players vying for the spot.

Yep I know that, been through it all before:) .
I also know that they are a great group of young men too.
It must be very tough for them at the moment.
Cheers.

Cornelius, Retzlaff and Lisle

*note that I am aware that Lisle is on a three year contract.

*EYES WIDE WITH AMAZEMENT* :)

Ok Cornelius I can understand to a point because he has been up and down (although I am a fan)

BUT

Retz and Lisle?

Retz has been solid with his work in the reserves and has been good with the limited time he has had in the Seniors. I feel he will be the next CHF or even FF target that we are lacking at the moment but may need 1 or 2 years to get there of solid hard work. He was going great guns until he did his knee!

It must be me but I actually thought Lisle did very well for a first gamer (Lions Team) and felt that nerves probably got the better of him in a couple of plays. Rucking was good as a backup and thought he played the "Merrett" role well enough to deserve more seniors time. In time will become a solid fwd player....

I think your plan would just be too costly. We've got a brilliant CHB developing in Clarke, and that's a position we need just as much as a key forward. I've personally more or less written of Ace as a long term option and think he's on the trade table this year, but as for Lisle and Retzlaff, I think it's far too soon to make a call. Lisle just played his first game for us (sixth overall), and barely any key forwards have much influence in their first twenty games. Retzy was looking brilliant in the reserves, and showed enough to suggest he's really coming along (pre-acl, at least). I think having two prospective key forwards isn't 'list clogging' - many clubs have more than just two - and I think it's our abundance of midfielders that is the biggest issue on our list. Probably why Harwood was moved down back, and Bartlett has been playing up forward in the reserves.

I would rate Cornelius the best of the three, J79. Retz was solid in the reserves the month or so he had his injury (but before that his goal kicking was horrendous - well below 50%). In his last 6 games at senior level (some were as the sub) he kicked a total of 1 goal and averaged 5 disposals. His best game at senior level was 2 goals and 12 disposals, so there hasn't really been much in the way of a breakout game to demonstrate he is capable of playing at a high level. He is a poor contested mark, he doesn't get much of the ball, and he has poor conversion when he does get it.

Lisle has played six games after almost 4 years in the system. I have only seen him play the one game, but he seems to have a touch of the Cameron Woods about him - lacks a bit of concentration and intensity. If a player executes a great tackle or smother than can really lift a team, but if a key forward gets outmarked by Jake King that can be really deflating. Had a relatively straight forward inside 50, but floated it on JBs head for an easy spoil. No goals, no goal assists. I'm not really seeing a good player in the making at this stage.

When you see someone like Jack Gunstan play, it really hits home how far away our developing key forwards are from being good players, let alone great ones.

What has staggered me in recent weeks is the amount of opposition players that we have played into form who were really struggling prior to facing the Lions.

To compound that was the sight of someone like Luke McGuane looking like a star. Demonstrates how bad we are going for that to happen.

What is hugely disappointing this year is the manner of our losses. Our 11 losses have come at an average of 52 points and we have not even had a loss inside 2 goals and worse still, 9 losses have been by 5+ goals. Also, our last 20 quarters have only yielded about 4 "wins", which is bloody unacceptable.

In light of our clearance debacle, and as much as it is a step in the wrong direction, I think we need to bring in someone like Buchanan, against another side with quality mids in Carlton, to hit in hard at the contest otherwise we are going to get whacked again.

Amon picked up a knee injury vs the Suns reserves a couple of weeks ago. Not sure how far away he is but he didnt play for the reserves yesterday.

Then best ignore my post in the Buchanan thread.

Re: comments about Harwood. Whislt he committed a glaring error, he looked ok to me in parts. He was obviously very reluctant to shoot for goal when he had the opportunities, but I think with an increased fitness base, there is no reason why he couldn't develop into a solid inside mid we lack.

I thought we played phenomenally.

Our midfield attacked the ball strong, got first touches, and blew past their defenders. Beautiful lead kicks to Browny who either slotted the goal or kicked long to the goal square. Our back line smashed them in defence, and rebounded and cleared the ball like nothing I've ever seen. We absolutely smashed them, and it was another totally dominant display. Oh shit. Sorry. Was reliving the '03 Grand Final.

We've missed Mitch Clark terribly this year.

We've missed M.Clark since 2009... he might as well have not have turned up in 2010 and 2011 given what he put out on the field in comparison to his 2009 season.

It was bloody galling to see him return to his better form on a consistent basis this year for another club.

Geez.... I think a three-year contract was too much to have offered for Lisle. A two-year contract should have been more than enough for a player who was largely not required by Hawthorn (perhaps even prior to getting Gunston) and had played minimal games.

Hopefully he doesn't become the next A.Buchanan.... o_O
