Ben Folds Five - Army
Blur - Tender
Custard - The New Matthew
Elliott Smith - Waltz #2
Fiona Apple - Fast as You Can
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss
Powderfinger - Passenger
Supergrass - What Went Wrong (In Your Head)
Testeagles - Like No Other

1998 was a super year, but 1999 didn't seem to have the big releases in the same way.

With the passing of time, and having listened to these at times over the past 20 years, I would now vote as follows:

Ben Folds Five - Army - exceptional song off the album of the year, and one of the great albums of all time.
Powderfinger - Passenger - still one of their absolute best, and holds up to this day
Custard - The New Matthew - a very underrated song, and still my favourite off Loverama
Supergrass - What Went Wrong (In Your Head) - another very underrated song off a massive record
Blur - Tender - one of their classiest tracks from their career
The Cardigans - My Favourite Game - not sure how I missed this the first time round, one of the great songs of that era
Blur - Coffee & TV - exceptional
Bis - Eurodisco - Do the French do anything wrong?
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication - pure class
NOFX - The Decline - never given the appreciation it deserves, Art-Punk?

Don't think I actually voted until maybe 2005 or 2006, but this Hottest 100 is incredibly rich. I agree that this might lack the upper crust of 1998, but the depth here is considerable, including a lot of deserving Australian entries (All Torn Down, Passenger, Stevie, Mascara, Lucky Star, Happiness, etc.). I was just turned 11, and a big Living End/Regurgitator/Chart Music fan at the time, as well as really into the nu-metal phenomenon of Korn & Limp Bizkit.

It is weird with Passenger at #100 and These Days at #1, as the former is superior.

In my opinion, 1999 is the weakest year for music in the past 30 years. Most popular music that was released that year (boy bands, nu metal & skater pop punk) has aged terribly and just sounds incredibly juvenile today. The 1999 H100 highlights this.

I've actually found some of the music that has aged best from that year tend to be underground house/techno tracks that wouldn't really get a spin on Triple J. 10 of my favourites as follows:
