Revisiting the 2012 AFL Draft

I think most of us were generally excited at the recruitment of Sharrod Wellingham from the Collingwood stables. A recent premiership player who dazzled through a premiership midfield and looked unstoppable (usually when playing us and I must confess I hated him for it).

But pick 18? Really?

It didn't take long for even the most astute WCE supporter to take time away from the Priddis is overated board to look over to who Collingwood took with that pick, a first round precious pick, the beautiful boy man, ladies and gentleman my Brodie (unfortunate surname) Grundy.

He looked every bit of a superstar and a likely Dean Cox replacement that we would never have (bearing in mind our continued love affair of everything South Australian).

back on point, we could have taken a punt on the man-ilicious ruckman or even tried our hand with players of the ilk of Tim Broomhead, Nathan Hrovat, Papa..por..papar.. the guy with the big chocko name, Kamdyn Mcintosh the list goes on..

But look at what he has produced this season, he is in almost All Australian selection, nullifies tall and short opposition, is a rebound beast and more importantly, is now allergic to trampolines.

In hindsight, I think he was and is, every bit worth a first round pick and I would like to say, Derek Hine... you were wrong.....

However I will say, due to our voting system - the first thing I'd be checking is games played

Draft picks have always been overrated.

Having said that, 1 pretty good season out of 3 doesn't mean he is worth a first round pick yet. Still a long way too go. He won't be Top 5 in our B+F, will probably be in the 8-11 range.

He's also no where near All-Australian. Probably wouldn't have made the squad even if there was 60 named. Taking nothing away from his great season though, he's been fantastic and I love the way he goes about it, but lets be realistic.

Could add I thought 5 was wasted on Sheppard . Clearly he is worth that pick now.

but my favourite draft tidbit with the current squad is still Melbourne taking Watts and Blease one pick before Naita and Shuey in the same draft.

I think you might be right, would be massive for gaffy if he could top off 2015 with a Bnf, all australian selection and maybe even a premiership medal. Here's hoping.
