Hey Gil, hope you have a great New Year buddy.

Our original colours were green, red and white and purple. The green, red and white reflected the Italian heritage of Fremantle, whilst the purple was the mixture of the blue from East Fremantle mixed with the red from South Fremantle.

Purple then became a dominant colour with teams like the Perth Glory and the Melbourne Storm so we went that way later on after it was determined that the green was not a great colour for television.

Purple is the colour of courage, whilst yellow is the colour of cowardness. (Just thought I would throw that last bit in.)

Hey, "Dice"! Hope you also have a great new year -- and great meeting you in person at the GNH. I love sporting club history, so thanks for explaining the origin of the purple and the South and East Freo combo bit. I knew of the nod to Freo's Italian heritage, with the red, white and green.

Purple also is the color of royalty and hopefully at about 5:30 p.m. AEST on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2014 on the hallowed grounds of the MCG, our club will be living out its first moments of being reigning premiers!

Just watched the Freo v Port hone game. Was also sober as that night was crazy at the game.

First half: my top 5 players in order.
Johnson rebounding and pin point passing was brilliant.
Fyfe interceptions and rebound.
Clarke solid in ruck and pushed forward to kick goals.
Ballas very creative and worked well forward plus helped yhe mids out.
Walters see Ballas comments.

I also thought Barlow and Neale were terrific in the packs.

Hannath needs to work on his kicking.

I hope to get time to finish watching the second half soon. What a great dominant performance.

I thought Hannaths kicking was one of his stronger suits ?? He needs to work on Getting the pill a bit more and improving his mobility...especially below his knees, dont think he will play much unless he really improves his pressure acts.

I agree with you on Hannath - kicking good, mobility not good. I think he needs to use that big body more too, split packs, lay shepherds, hurt the opposition.

Hey Harry, thanks for that. I wasn't aware of the Italian influence in the jumper, although it certainly makes sense. I was always of the understanding that the red and green were part of our "maritime" heritage - green for starboard, red for port. I guess those colours were multi-tasking!

Yep had a look at the Freo v Wiggles game (thanks best wifey in the world for Foxtel for Christmas). I was a little shocked how competitive the Wiggles were for all but the last quarter. We had a good team in and we really could not shake them. Funny though, from this game on we went to a different level!

They still believed they could make the finals at that time and threw everything at us.

I would have liked to see some of this from Sandi and/or Pav in the GF. :(

There is a whole spiel written down somewhere about the jumper reflecting the Italian heritage, red and green being port and starboard as you say, purple being a combination of SF red and EF blue and also being the colour wharfies' navy blue singlets turn after being exposed to working in the sun. Some people say those things were considered, some people say it was just a BS story to give the decision some meat because it was actually a group of marketing people who picked purple because it was an underutilised colour in sporting circles and was popular with women.

Go with whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

I knew someone who was one of the few 'local representatives' (ie someone with the right connections through business etc... and yes that is a little cynical!) who was on the committee that was deciding on the design, colours etc - a guy of Italian heritage coincidentally. I remember discussing this new club with him at a friend's wedding... when he 'leaked' the 'top secret' (at the time!) info to me that the colours would be purple, red, white and green and the jumper would have an anchor on the front... I remember being gobsmacked at the combination, and I just could not, for the life of me, imagine what it would actually look like... :D

I do remember quite clearly him saying that the red and green was for the port and starboard lighthouses on the north and south moles, after I light-heartedly ribbed him about the 'bloody dings wanting to own everything in Freo' (it was a Croatian wedding after all and we ethnics have to stick up for ourselves and our little bit of appropriated heritage!!)... and I have a vague recollection that we discussed the purple being the same colour as the faded wharfie singlets - but that it was also an unused colour, so that's why they chose it.

I do know pretty much for sure that the Italian connection was coincidental rather than intentional, and the purple was never meant to be a combo of south's and east's colours - but more a marketing thing as Reginald Perrin suggests, that they were able to link to the faded bonds singlets of the lumpers. Apparently marketing gurus at the time suggested that purple would be the 'next big thing' in sporting club colours.

Correct weight IP I've had the misfortune to witness the terminal knob-end Grant Dorrington drone on about the mountain of market research and the avalanche of opinion affirming the eternal and splendid supremacy of The Purple, amongst all with 1/2 a brain or more.

Well said IP and I think you are right too. I have an old work colleague/friend who worked for the 303 Advertising & Marketing Agency during the time that they were appointed to design the original jumpers for the club.

He told me that their instructions from the inaugural board were to incorporate the history and culture of Fremantle, as well as pay tribute to the two Fremantle WAFL clubs somehow.

He told me that they spent a day down in Fremantle wandering down the cappuccino strip, having lunch at the Capri or Roma, then went down to fishing boat harbour and the wharf etc.

And that's what they came up with in the end.

He did tell me that purple was used in other sporting codes, but not as yet in the AFL and when you mix red and blue together it makes purple. He also said that the Greeks, Portuguese and Croatians also played a big part of the history of Fremantle but they couldn't honour them all. He said most people associated Fremantle with the cappuccino strip, Cicerello's and the Roma back then.

I'm glad they didn't have to incorporate the America's Cup in there as well though.

Finally watched the rest of the round 16 derby, Harry. Silvagni was definitely on Darling the whole game. Goal 4 was another lead by Darling to the 50m arc, Silvagni actually kept reasonable pace but got pinged for an arm chop. Johnson touched the ball on the line, but it was called a goal anyway after inconclusive replays. Goal 5 Darling out marked Fyfe much closer to goal for an easy shot in junk time, Silvagni nowhere in sight, may even have been having a spell on the bench.

The round 19 match against Carlton is on at 2pm if anyone is home this afternoon.

Thanks Gaskin, I watched it and here is my take on the game in review.

We really started to play well from this point on after a few ordinary games following the bye.

Once again we had no Pav or Luke McPharlin and the only changes from the Adelaide game was that Ballas came in at the expense of Matt Taberner, and Tommy Sheridan came in for the injured Garrick Ibbotson.

Highlights

Sandi and Clarke were superb in the ruck against Kreuzer and Rowe, whilst Zac Dawson kept Lachie Henderson to two goals.

Sonny Walters made up for the previous week's performance with 4 goals and Ballas played well away from Subiaco for once and kicked 3 goals.

Best Players

Nathan Fyfe, with 31 disposals and seven clearances, was a star for the Dockers, while Ryan Crowley tagged Carlton skipper Marc Murphy out of the game, holding him to just 13 touches.

Fyfe, Barlow then Mundy were my best 3 players, however I must give credit to Danyle Pearce who played his best game of the year and kicked a very good goal when the game was in the balance.

Lachie Neale, apart from the one turnover which gave them a goal, was all poise and class.

I also thought that Nick Suban, Tendai Mzungu and Stephen Hill were brilliant in patches and Michael Johnson was once again solid in defence.

Low Points

Matt de Boer and Paul Duffield were quite poor I thought.

Chris Mayne tried hard all game but didn't kick a goal.

The Carlton crowd was woeful with their behaviour.

Some of the umpiring decisions were disgraceful.

Thanks.

Any thoughts on Matt De Boer's role in the game and who he played on?

out of our many stuff ups, trading Winston was one that baffled me the most

Yep. Always loved his goals.

I have watched the gf again, painful as it was. I was hoping to find on 2nd viewing that we were the better team and just unlucky, but the truth is we were well beaten, anyone that thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.

I haven't watched again, don't think I can, but you are right.

Thanks.

Sorry Harry, I didn't really notice and I've deleted it off IQ now. I've seen games vs west coast, Carlton, Western Bulldogs and Adelaide over the last few days and couldn't trust my memory of what happened in which game. You'll have to wait until it comes around again in Foxtel's programming.

Round 22 v Port Adelaide is on at 6pm if anyone wants to watch another great performance.
Think I'll tune into that. I had the Melbourne game on in the background this morning, but I just couldn't get into it.

I just got a new smart TV. It has AFL app built in. I was able to call up the preliminary final against Sydney and watch it streamed to the TV via wireless internet. The mind boggles.
Looked bloody awesome on the LED screen and damn did we play good!

I just got a TV with the same app..couldn't believe my luck. Watched the GF again :(

Which game you referring to? The Port game?
Yeah, should have said that. You know what I look like, so you're not allowed to play.
