Not one of our better games due to the long road trip and humid slippery conditions, but a 45 point win against a side that beat Collingwood up there is still pretty good.

Interesting that you say that because I rate that as one of our better performances for the year (haven't rewatched it in the off-season but I've seen it about four times already.

GC were a pretty dangerous team at home this year and we completely suffocated them from siren to siren (it was their 2nd biggest home loss for the season iirc). One of our best 4 qtr efforts for the season imo.

I agree that the Gold Coast game was a real highlight of 2013 - I'd actually say it was one of our only four quarter efforts for the entire season, aside from the three games of steamroller jobs between Rounds 20-22. With the possible exception of the North Melbourne game, every other one saw lapses at one time or another.

The Port game went close FFC4ME, two of our best yet more unfancied wins of last year.

I really like the idea of our first home game being against the GC, think they'll be quite formidable next year.

I don't know how you do it Harry. Even on the third or fourth viewing I couldn't sit down and calmly analyse a game. I still get upset at all the wrong umpiring decisions I did the first time round and end up yelling at the TV. Either that, or I'm too busy fist pumping the great goals and marks.

And the legend of "Dipper" Reems has begun.

I'm pretty sure Harry Reems earned his legend as a dipper quite some time ago.

Really enjoyed watching the 1st quarter of the Collingwood game. I was in awe of how we played. The whole game was great, we took some hits, and managed to power away from them in the end.

That comment describes one of the significant character changes at the club in my opinion.

The main thing that is now clear to me is that poor umpiring has a far greater impact on weak teams.
There was a time when poor umpiring decisions cost us games. Now, poor umpiring is a mere nuisance and we just get on with winning the game.

It all comes back to whether you win or not and umpiring is only a small factor for strong teams.
To put it into context, I have not watched the grand final replay but from memory there were some ordinary decisions by Nicholls against Fremantle.
I am not complaining about the umpires in the grand final because I know we were well below our best and still only lost by 15 points. If we were better we would have beaten them.

Good teams win inspite of umpires rather than lose because of them.

It was quite a scrappy game and we fumbled the ball a lot at times. We kicked the first 4 goals of the game and then seemed to just cruise for the rest of the game. We really only put them away after Charlie Dixon went off injured early in the 3rd quarter.

We missed Nat Fyfe in the middle for sure.

So what I should of said perhaps is that it was a long hard grind and our skills were down a bit due to the slippery conditions. Jon Griffin said in his post game interview that the conditions were trying, especially the humidity.

So I just had a quick check of the stats and here's what I noticed.

Our leading possession getters were Suban, Ibbotson ( as kick behind the play) and Mundy with 22 possessions each, then came Luke McPharlin with 21 possessions.

I think if Luke McPharlin is getting the ball more times than Barlow, Mayne, Ballas, Mzungu, Duffield, Son-Son, D & C Pearce and Matt De Boer then something is not going quite to plan.

For them, Jarrod Harbrow had 32 touches, Gary Ablett had 28 and Matt Shaw had 24.

In the overall stats we lost the clearances 31 to 43, and we lost the disposals which were 334 to 349.

They also beat us in both the contested possessions and tackle count.

Inside 50's were 45 each.

Michael Walters kicked 4 goals, of which 3 were kicked in the 3rd quarter, then came Jon Griffin with 3.

Completely agree. That 1st qtr and our elim final against Geelong at the G in 2012 are two of the best.

I don't think he quite regained the early season form after the injury against Sydney, and of course played the finals with a PCL injury, but was still effective.

He really has a full bag of tricks, including one-on-one in the marking contest, a big leap to take a speccy, and strong hands on the lead, and then there is all the stuff he does when the ball is on ground, the sublime kicking and the work when the opposition has the ball. And on top of all that he is a proven big game player (unfortunately not so much in 2013 as already mentioned), being one of our best players in our 2010 and 2012 finals, (probably behind only Mundy).

I can't wait to see what he produces for us in 2014.

I noticed Walters still wearing knee strapping at training on Friday, albeit not heavy strapping.

Yeah/nah. Those kind of what ifs don't really work. Goals take the ball back to the centre, whereas we are awesome at locking the ball into our forward line if we miss anyway. Too many variables.
