Drafted with pick 39 in the 2015 National Draft.

Meet the clearance king Rhys Mathieson

THERE'S no real secret to the way Rhys Mathieson influences games, because for the past three years the midfielder has been as consistent as any draft prospect.

The Geelong Falcons product has been a constant in the Victorian talent pathway since making the under-12s state team, progressing all the way through to be named a back-to-back All Australian this year.

Parish and Mathieson's perfect double act

RHYS Mathieson slowly reverses his car into the freezing water as Darcy Parish unloads the attached 'tinnie' boat into Geelong's Corio Bay.

The local teenagers are familiar with the area: the last time they came down for a couple of hours of fishing, Mathieson's car almost got bogged in the sand.

The time before that, a little way over to the left, they had a day out and reeled in about 30 fish in an afternoon. And just behind them, inside the gates at the nearby Geelong Grammar School, they met for the first time six years ago.

AFL draft 2015: Meet Darcy Parish and Rhys Mathieson

Rhys Mathieson’s footy talents are no joke

RHYS Mathieson’s footy strength is his innate ability to hunt the ball.

But when the Sherrin bounced towards the fence during a lunchtime kick at school this year the ferocious onballer applied his skills laterally.

Mathieson and his mates found a dead mouse, scooped it up in a lunch bag and dropped it into top-five prospect Darcy Parish’s locker.

“Except it somehow ended up in another mate’s locker and stayed there for the weekend,” dual All-Australian Mathieson said at draft combine.

“We got back on Monday and the whole locker room was stinking and was tipped upside down pretty much.

“It was revolting, I swear I could taste the smell that’s how bad it was. Oh, and it was actually a dead rat — but it’s all just fun and games.”

Geelong Falcons midfielder Rhys Mathieson set for first-round pick

RHYS Mathieson describes it as his “tunnel vision”.

When the footy spills loose of the contest, the 18-year-old contested ball king doesn’t see anything else. He just has to come away with the footy.

There’s also his swagger. Not a swagger of overconfidence, but a swagger of purpose and the strong self-belief needed to make the grade at AFL level.

As talent manager Michael Turner points out, he’s the most competitive player the Geelong Falcons have produced since Luke Hodge and Jimmy Bartel.

Looks like he desperately wanted to go to the same club as Parish. "Playing with him makes me a better player I reckon" is a dead giveaway. Hopefully he fits in nicely and makes some good mates up here

He only has two years to before he can claim the 'go home' factor, & be reunited with his mate .... then again may be he can convince Parish to move north.

For those interested, Rhys is a relation of Don Mathieson.

Don is a football legend in the Geelong region and the Geelong Football League best & fairest medal is named after him.
The Mathieson Medal.

The Geelong Football League is currently the highest ranked Victorian Country League so it's quite an honour.

That doesn't make him geelong royalty does it? Bloody hell here we go again!!

Haha - Certainly not Geelong royalty.
Don played mostly for StMarys while Rhys played for Bell Park. Not many would be aware of the link - I think Rhys is Don's great nephew.

It keeps the go home factor in play more so than the other boys ... It may never be about how welcome he's made at the club .... It may always come down to the bigger picture & completely out of the clubs control.

Considering practically every other club had the chance to get him twice, I don't think he will necessarily be thinking of heading out the exit door straight away like a first round pick might.

It was great to see him finally in lions colours stating how stoked he was to be at the club ... Whether he meant it or not, it was good to hear him say it anyway ...

Pre-2015 from Paige Cardona:

Rhys Mathieson
Geelong Falcons
Midfielder
Height: 183cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 10/1/1997

It’s easy to spot Rhys Mathieson, and that’s not just because of his long mop of hair. The sublime midfield talent from the Falcons is ever bit a volume-accumulator and ball hunter and will do absolutely anything to win possession. There is a certain ferociousness about Mathieson, he attacks the ball and the man with reckless abandon, and inspires his teammates with his courage in congestion and overhead, and his willingness to put his body on the line. He looks like a choir boy, but plays like a junk yard dog. He has breakaway pace from congestion and a neat disposal set to match, and made a big statement winning All Australian honours at the 2014 National Championships as a bottom-age prospect, and taking home the Kevin Sheehan Medal for the U16 Division 1 best and fairest. Looms as a top-five selection, and has a nice blend of his inside and outside game. Averaged 21 disposals at 69 per cent disposal efficiency, including three marks, three tackles and six clearances over five games.

Gotta love his attitude. Seems to fit into the Rocky or Squizzy mould.

Far more comfortable concerning him after heRing him say he was expecting to be picked up by the lions, just didn't know which pick ... Thankfully he seems happy enough with his first few days at the club & with number 36.
