Brisbane Lions don’t know when they can train at Gabba

The fractured cheekbone suffered by draftee Rhys Mathieson in the final NAB Challenge game hasn’t just stalled the start of his AFL career, it also delayed the signing of a contract extension.

Brisbane have been impressed with the tough-as-nails midfielder, who was taken with pick 39 in last year’s draft, and were keen to lock him away beyond his standard two-year draftee contract.

Mathieson, who has quickly become a popular member of the club and has moved in with utility Sam Mayes, had also indicated his desire to strike a new deal.

One for the training watchers. Has he been up and about on the track yet? Would have thought he'd be running around by now. Just to what extent?

Woo! Will be great to have him back out there again! I suspect it will take a few weeks for him to find his groove but it will be exciting to see his form and watch him push for senior selection. Will be a handy addition to our reserves side which is lacking in midfielders.

He'd be itching to get out there you'd think

Match Preview: Reserves

The Lions are still yet to register their first win but will be bolstered by the return of Sam Mayes, Dan McStay and Rhys Mathieson to mark 15 AFL-listed players lining up for the Lions.

WARM RHYS-CEPTION FOR MATHIESON
After fracturing his cheekbone during the Lions’ preseason, prodigious draftee Rhys Mathieson is in line to make his return through the Reserves. The Lions’ 2’s will be grateful for the stability and support he will provide on the struggling half-forward flank and will look for him to be a presence in contests.

Lions Reserves Go Down in ANZAC NEAFL Thriller

The Reserves were buoyed by the inclusion of Sam Mayes, Dan McStay and Rhys Mathieson which brought the total to 15 AFL-listed players lining up for the Lions. Their presence was noticeable, in the end combining for 92 of the Lions 291 disposals.

Rhys Mathieson particularly put in a good performance in his first game back from a fractured cheekbone, drawing six free kicks and finishing with 32 disposals.

He returned after an extended lay off with injury (cheekbone). He had a really good balance of contested and uncontested football. He was still short of a gallop. He played as an inside mid, won some ball in and around the contest, tackled well, drew a lot of free kicks that certainly helps our contested footy. He might spend a couple of weeks with us just in terms of his match fitness and get his run up before he is in line for selection. He’s added some depth around our midfield with Keaysy and Jansen and the likes.

Again still returning from an extended lay-off with injury. Rhys played full game time, he had it 21 times. His contested footy again was a highlight, his work inside the contest. We’re still working on what Rhys does on the outside, his ability to run from contest to contest. I know it was a lot harder in the conditions but that’s Rhys’ big area of improvement to play senior footy at this stage. His contested work and his ability to hunt the footy inside for us has been really good.

Not real confident he'll be debuting this weekend with the lack of noise coming from the club. Considering schache and keays were made known early in the week, my expectations are that he won't.

Young Lion Rhys Mathieson locked in for two more years

FIRST-year midfielder Rhys Mathieson is set to be the next Brisbane Lion to recommit to the club, with the Victorian having agreed to a two-year contract extension.

Mathieson is yet to debut at senior level and wasn't due to fall out of contract until the end of next year, but AFL.com.au understands the extended deal will see him tied to the Lions until at least the end of 2019.

The 19-year-old's signature will follow that of recent re-signings Eric Hipwood and Sam Skinner, tall prospects who joined the club alongside Mathieson at last year's NAB AFL Draft.

Hipwood last week signed on for two more years (also through to the end of 2019) while Skinner added an extra year to his current deal (keeping him a Lion until the end of 2018).

Mathieson looked set for an early season debut having featured in the Lions' NAB Challenge side, but suffered a broken cheekbone after a bone-crunching bump from GWS forward Jeremy Cameron in the pre-season competition.

He required surgery and only recently returned to the NEAFL, where his form has been strong. He has been named as one of the Lions' emergencies for Saturday night's clash with Collingwood.

The Lions were rapt to select Mathieson with pick 39 at last year's draft, with the hard-at-it midfielder one of the best of his kind in last year's intake.

He averaged 25 disposals a game at TAC Cup level and 20 during the national under-18 championships, and excelled at the stoppages.

THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO IN THE WORLD! THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO IN THE WORLD!

ALL HAIL KING MATHIESON!

Leppa: "Now Ryan we just need you to sign this standard Debut form at the bottom"
Mathieson: "Sure... What's this bit about '2 more years'."
Leppa: "Standard form. Just sign it and we can get ready for Sunday."

Have watched the video twice. Glad this lad's on our side. Was there for Shache's debut, will be there for Beastmode's. Could be a transformative year.
