Well as most people here would know I've been the no.1 ticket holder of Team Stanley Knife, I think I might've even been the one that gave him the Stanley Knife nickname.

I've stuck by him through thick and thin and defended him against all comers on bigfooty.

I was on the Stanley bandwagon back before he'd even played his first game for us as this Bay 13 thread shows.

It's taken a while but I'm stoked to see him finally raise the bat for a 50 and I still think he has a double ton in him for the Saints.

Hopefully he has a massive breakout game tomorrow to shut up the h8terz and justify my faith in him.

Well done!

When he's on, he's on!

Well done Rhys. A good game for your 50th.

Does anyone else get the impression that when Roo retires (or moves to the wing), Stanley will become a much more effective and confident player.

A couple of times he didn't jump for the ball because Roo was at the same contest.

It looks to me like he's holding back a lot because he is so junior in the FWD line.

IMO its not Roo its just a general lack of confidence from never being a regular player. Id love him to be guaranteed a game for the rest of the season to see wether he builds up his confidence or wether he just isn't up to it. 2 weeks for StKilda then 2 weeks for Sandy isn't helping his confidence or helping us figuring out if he can make it or not.
Finally he isn't injury riddled, so id love to see him play 7 or 8 straight games and see if he can build some consistent form.

Stanley is unfairly maligned IMO. No one I going to replace Riewoldt, and nor should anyone put the unfair expectation on Stanley to do so.

To get 50 games out of pick 47 is a good result.

And as we know, key position players take time to develop.

Given we've put 5 years into him already I think we need to back him.

Hopefully he continues to develop and becomes a starting 18 player.

I'd be happy with a 2-3 goal per game average from him for the rest of his career.

Again - we're putting totally unrealistic expectation on him.

At 3 goals a game, he'd be tied with Schulz at the moment for the coleman! - just ain't going to happen unless he improves dramatically. (dont get me wrong - i want him to get there)

I'd be happy for Stanley to kick 30 goals in a season as the back up ruck and 3rd FWD.

Enigmatic player. Just when I start to think "Hmmmm. I don't know if he will make it" He does a couple of things in a game and I think "Hmmmm he's worth sticking with".
Im happy to give him the rest of this season and next yr to show some improvement.
He definitely has all the tools , I think he just needs help reading the instructions:p.
Im happy to persevere with him:thumbsu:

yeah i saw that also and another few where he was in prime position to take the mark and Nick cuts across to make a 50% chance at marking it, TBH Nick it as detrimental to the team as he is good for it

I've been saying that for years, Nick did the exact same thing to Kosi, it also tends to drag 2 more opposition bodies to the contest and they mop it up.

Nick also takes 8 grabs a week kicks 2+ and marks it i50 more than any player in the comp....

Rhys needs to support him by running his patterns and emptying out.... Which is why AR was critical of him recently....

Just not working hard enough.

.......... arrival and breakout game we have all been hoping to see from Rhys? 19 disposals, 14 marks, 13 hitouts, 2 tackles, 3 goals and 2 behinds i think he had one or two out on the fulls as well so could have bagged about 6-7 yesterday. He was playing against one of the best defenders in Luke McPharlin for a far bit of that match and took him to the cleaners (being fair to Luke it was his first game back after a few weeks out) but it was also against one of the best back lines in the competition. I think it was definitely his career best game so far.

Every time he went near the ball he looked like marking it all the time and looked very dangerous, i thought it was a Riewoldt like game!

Since being dropped to the VFL he returned to the senior side which was his 50th AFL game and has looked a different player, currently top 10 in the competition for contested marks as well on 27 for the season.

So is this the arrival of Rhys Stanley where he stands up and becomes a very handy key forward at AFL level?

Article from the Herald Sun after his performance:
The stagnating big man had slotted just three goals from his past nine matches either side of stint in the VFL as St Kilda fans wondered if he would ever cash in on flashes of talent.

Last night Stanley knifed Fremantle, threw its home final hopes into chaos and set up the Saints’ party as they breathed new life into the wooden spoon race.

Stanley might not have slotted a second-half goal as his side’s Etihad Stadium shindig roared out of control but he wrote the invitations late in the first quarter and brought the firecrackers and the froffs in the second.

The 204cm Saint entered the 58-point rout with a career-best of two goals.

Stanley, 23, walked off at half-time with three to his name with the last restoring a 40-point lead and ensuring the Dockers would have to rewrite history to extend St Kilda’s losing streak to 12.

It was slotted after ex-teammate Zac Dawson ran through the mark to bring Stanley within 55m – and range – to cap the most scintillating St Kilda half since Fremantle coach Ross Lyon sat in its box.

In the three seasons Lyon coached Stanley he played nine games for eight wins and the four-time Grand Final coach must be flying back to Perth shaking his head at the show Stanley put on.

Lyon started 2012 All-Australian Luke McPharlin on the aggressive forward..

When Stanley found space despite 33 players occupying his attacking 50 to mark a Nick Riewoldt stab and slot his second the move was made.

Lyon switched All-Australian’s with last year’s member Michael Johnson heading to the damaging target but he too was helpless as Stanley went on to finish with 14 marks (three contested) in a replica of Jarrad Waite’s stunning performance the night before.

Stanley’s numbers mirrored champion Nick Riewoldt while he even won 13 hitouts as he rolled through the ruck

His clean, high-flying marking was the standout, but Stanley’s supreme work-rate also allowed his mates to revel as well.
