I find this an astonishing thing to say by Clarke. Another-words Newell can bust a gut and be best on ground for the remainder of the season and he has no chance of cracking a senior game, yet Crisp gets promoted on less than impressive seconds performances (in comparison to Newell), Docherty is nearing senior selection and Newell, well there's realy no pressure on him because he is a rookie and appears will remain a rookie. If I was Newell I'd be seeking clarification as to where I stand with the club.

Poor form from Clarke.:(

Overreaction to my mind. I wasn't reading that as excluding the potential for senior selection, rather that it's confirming that his spot is safe for next year so we don't have to promote him just to see what we've got, potentially unlike Crisp.

The way the seniors are going its tough for anyone to get in, let alone a rookie.

Maybe that dialogue between Nathan Clarke, Voss and Newell does exist and he knows where he stands and what he needs to do. I feel that it could be that we have only limited exposure to that kind of analysis and communication, especially with what they probably think that we would consider to be a low ranking and unimportant rookie?

Our ressies watchers all concluded that he was probably not the BOG. The coach though has really liked his game. By the sounds he is playing a role that is somewhat unfamiliar at this level (ie not a tagging role) and the coach is really happy with his progress. He gives him a big accolade whilst reassuring him he has time to come to grips with the ins and outs without his spot on the list being in jeopardy. No pressure son just keep doing what you are doing and we will stick by you. Everything is going to plan.

It is probably hard for him to break into the side given our lack of injuries atm and the kid might have been worried that if he didn't get a game he could be let go.

Maybe, However everyone on the list is competing for a spot in the seniors. So, according to your response it is OK to promote Crisp (maybe others) just to see what we have, deserving of promotion or not.
I don't think you would be happy if your employer promotes someone ahead of you just so they see what they've got.

Grant you we have limited exposure to the inner circle of coaching and development, therefore we can only comment on the public communication that the club and personnel release. Thus I have commented on Clarke's public release. I call it how I see it.

Low ranking and unimportant rookie? WOW. I wonder how you would react in Newell's place if you are told you're a low ranking and unimportant considering he has blitzed long standing club performance records and now he is performing on the field in the seconds as well.
Once all draftees are assembled at a club all are told it matters zilch what draft pick they are drafted . What is important is performances on the field and behaviors off it.
Have you ever been told you're low ranking and unimportant IH?

Irel you have totally misunderstood my post. I wrote that the coaching and media staff at the Lions probably think that for the most part Lions supporters don't really know much about Newell and thus consider him low ranking and unimportant, when in actual fact we think he is pretty spesh, considering his breaking of Hart's 3km record and all. It speaks to the level of coverage that the fitness staff give the less well known players like Brad Harvey etc when publishing the injury report.

I wasn't saying that he was actually low ranking and unimportant, and I certainly wasn't having a crack at Richie, who I want to see succeed. Apologies for not expressing myself clearer.

Irel I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. I do not read that quote as Clarke saying he will not be considered for senior selection. Merely that the pressure is not on him to do so.

On the other rookies you also have to consider that maybe Crisp and Newell aren't competing for the same spot. Crisp may have suited a more physical role that Voss wanted played and he was impressed with the way he went about things in the preseason games. Crisp may also have been in better form at the time but Newell has now gone past him.

Worth noting that the rookie who was probably in the best form in the first half of the year was Wrigley. I thought he has been pretty unlucky not to get a game but the stars never seemed to quite align for him. Hopefully they do.

I agree, the stars sometime do not align and opportunity is gone. I also agree with your comment re; Crisp.
I like Crisp, I think he will be a player. The Newell/Crisp thing was as a comparison level and in response to dlanod's post.
I just think that we are incredibly fortunate that we have such a depth of young talent coming through.
Kudos to Hadley/Kerr for their recruiting nous and the development department for bringing these guys on at a rapid rate.
It will be enormously tough to make room for this year's quality draft.

Clarke likes to share the love around a bit. I take his comments with a pinch of salt. If a player gets talked up week after week, that's when I'll be confident that there is some form there to be excited about.

NEAFL Round 18 vs. Mt Gravatt
30.07.2012

Richard Newell was another Lions player who continued his recent good form.

“He (Newell) had come into the game under a bit of an injury cloud but when that warmed up he was everywhere, particularly when the chips were down,” Clarke said.

“When we were really lacking spread and run he gave it to us in what was a pretty complete performance.”

Newell had started in a defensive role across half forward, looking to restrict Vultures prime-mover Jake Furfaro, and was later swung onto Josh Vearing after the home side captain had started in blistering form.

But in the second half, when Clarke cut back his specific defensive assignments, Newell went into an undermanned midfield and provided a lot grunt and run.

I don't think there is any doubting Clarke is a Newell fan that's for sure.

A lot of Newell's standout qualities that Clarke raves about go largely unnoticed to the standard footy watcher as he does the unrewarded things really well. If he does get a crack at AFL level and can fulfil a role the way he does in the reserves, I think he could become one of Vossy's favourites as well. Voss has shown he likes to persevere with players willing to play their role consistently.

NEAFL Round 21 Preview

Peter Blucher

The Brisbane Lions will finish without a 2012 ‘ironman’ after Richard Newell, who had been the only player to play in each of the first 17, was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The former Lions NSW scholarship holder underwent a shoulder reconstruction on Tuesday ahead of a big pre-season in preparation for his third year with the club.

Running Man.

Richard Newell officially joined the Lions list with pick no. 57 in the 2011 Rookie Draft after originally joining the Lions setup via the NSW/ACT Scholarship program back in 2008. A brief stint in 2010 with GWS in the TAC Cup was followed by a year in the NEAFL with the Lions Reserves & an impressive showing in the 2011 U18s National Championship for Queensland.

Playing largely as a tagger he was named amongst Queenslands best on multiple ocassions with scalps the likes of Chad Wingard to his name. This, coupled with his strong form in Lions colours in the NEAFL competition, saw the club guarantee him a rookie spot halfway through 2011.

Newell would be quoted as stating that he had put on a fair bit of bulk in the gym leading into the 2012 pre-season proper but it didn't hurt his already legendary running powers. In the first formal session he would win the first 3km trial and finish only 1 second off beating the club record. Players would hit Twitter up regularly throughout the rest of pre-season marvelling at his running powers, and it wasn't long before that 3km time trial record fell to Newell... and then fell again to Newell next time round.

Given his powerful running ability & endurance, coupled with his playing history so far, most had tipped his chances of breaking into the Senior side as being in the tagger position. It was therefore no surprise to see him line up in Round 2 of the 2012 NAB Cup standing beside Adelaide's rising midfield star Patrick Dangerfield.

After that taste of Senior action he would return to plying his trade in the Lions Reserves. He would consistently rate highly in the coach's match reports on the website, raising a bit of interest amongst the Lions faithful. Admittedly there were times where Ressies watchers thought that Clarke was perhaps overstating the role played by Richie but there was no denying he was making a name for himself with his performances.

While he did spend a lot of time early on in the season playing his traditional run with roles it was noticeable throughout this years NEAFL season that the club was working on his game "going the other way". He would spend time roaming the wing and across the half forward line and not always in a "defensive forward" type role. Notably he managed to kick a goal or two on multiple ocassions and seemed to be working hard on his field positioning and being involved in link up work with his team mates.

Sadly a shoulder injury he was carrying from the middle of the season would prematurely end his season as he would be booked in early to undergo surgery. This would mean he would miss being a part of the Lions Reserves premiership success but this was surely scheduled in such a way as to ensure he would be ready once pre-season started again. At the NEAFL Grand Final vs the NT Thunder his arm was still in a sling and he said it would be 6 more weeks of no running before he could stretch out his legs once more.

With another pre-season looming I am sure the rest of the Lions squad will be out to try & seize the opportunity to knock him off early before he regains his touch... but knowing Richie's competitive nature I'm sure he'll be just as keen to hold them at bay...

Newelly is one who I'm very interested to see how he develops this season. He may be able to do a decent job at NEAFL or state level but I can't see him transitioning to doing a tagging job at AFL level all that easily. IIRC he was playing on a forward flank just before he did his shoulder. He could probably go either way at the end of the season; elevation or delisting. Hopefully he can step up and fill the void of Hawksley or Buchanan in the reserves and start pushing for senior action by the end of the season.

Yup, I don't think the club will be expecting any senior action this year, just a solid year in the 2nds improving his footy. He is essentially a first year player this year.

Why is he essentially a first year player, chopperduck? This is his second year on the rookie list, and I would have thought he needs to start pushing for selection in the seniors or he will be out the door.
