The only thing I don't like is comparison keeps getting made to our 2014 jumper, which is more poo and wee than yellow and black

Our colours under Puma are awesome and I hope they've compared those two side by side to ensure there is a clash

As long as they've done that then I'm fine with the whole thing. It sucks but who cares, GF!

Why wouldn't they? Swap the jumpers for the classic and at least have all the celebrations in the proper jumper.
If it's so important to have the celebrations in a specific jumper why did clubs used to do them wearing the opposition's jumper?

Maybe if Richmond win they should accept the trophy in Adelaide jumpers. Because, you know, tradition...

Because this is this year, not back whenever that happened.

I think Jim Brody (the father from the movie Freddy Got Fingered) could sum this up best:

"Oh boo-hoo. Little Lord Fauntleroy's football team has made the Grand Final for the first time in 35 years, and he's upset because they have to wear a slightly different jumper."

Look, it's just laundry. Plenty of clash jumpers were sold to fans well before this week. We all loved it when it was finally adopted after all the strange options we had before. At won stage, it was more successful than our 'traditional'.

If we had won a flag in the years where we played without a sash on the back (90s onwards), would they have been 'illegitimate'? Hell, when we won our first flag in 1920, there were even a couple of sashes the wrong way around.

We won VFA flags back in the days when we wore the 'bumblebee'. That's a part of our history. We were called the wasps back then - oh dear - can't have that. Strike from the record books.

The main thing is - keep our colours - yellow and black (I don't know - maybe write a song or something...........). There's a lot of Richmond yellow and black decoration around the old town already (during this week, it will be 95%). Yellow and black is the identity of Richmond.

I hope the players run out for their first training session this week in hessian bags. Pose for a photo, have a laugh. Either that or the traditional pink tutus. THE LAUNDRY DOESN'T MATTER.

This is the stupidest logic ever conceived. Well done. Quite the achievement.
Thanks. I thought it was a mostly decent effort myself, actually. Considering how many very serious and worryingly concerned replies I got, I may have to aim a bit lower next time, though.

The outrage over something so insignificant is hilarious
Its not tho.
The home jumpers of both clubs look so nice and are part of their history for so long.
Wearing a clash jumper makes it look like youre watching a NAB cup game or something, not suitable for a grand final.

Thats what you're going to be looking at during the grand final. To be that just doesnt suite grand final day, it just makes the game look unimportant.

Thats the pre-season game. The grand final is going to look closer to a pre season game

Its a big difference to teams wearing their proper jumpers.

I think once the ball is bounced you're not even going to think about it. I get that your home jumper looks better, but in the grand scheme of things it's not worth getting worked up over IMO.

I don't really have any affinity with my own clubs jumpers, so maybe its just me.

During the game yeh I wont care.
Its just the IF you win, its going to piss me off looking back. Having to see highlights in that. Pictures in that. Almost entirely bright yellow jumper always looked back in history. It just looks wrong. The normal jumpers are so appealing to look at and then theres that clash one.

nonsense. it means we will have visually contrasted opponents on GF day which makes it extremely easy to follow for the millions of us not at the ground following packs, hundreds of changing camera angles, narrow and wide focus, and adjusting light as play moves in and out of the shade of the grandstand.

the opening game of the season is a joke for every conceivable reason. it highlights how backward the VFL is.

alternate strips are here to stay, and the sooner the AFL introduce rules on their use, the better the League will be and the focus of GF will be on the game itself. let it be a lesson to all clubs to have legitimate alternate strip they are happy to wear in a GF because every club may find itself in this position in future.

NOBODY will ever be happy to play in an 'alternate' strip - it's an alternate!!! - what you use when you can't use the one you want.

But, it has to happen. You're right about the main problem - the AFL rules are pathetic about it. Make the rules - unambiguous - list all the clashes, and what team has precedence (home team, highest team, whatever), and how the clashes are to be solved (alternate strip, white shorts, whatever). Before the start of 2018, thanks.

Anyone remember the famous Port v Richmond EF of 2014, where the AFL pulled a ruling out of their a*se in the week of the game, that eventually wound up with the away team wearing their home strip, and Port wearing a strip they weren't technically approved to wear in the AFL (not that anyone really minded that, but......).

Its already easy to tell with home jumpers. Vibrant yellow v Adelaide dull yellow. Blue v Black. Red on top of that for Adelaide. Vertical stripe all around v Horizontal stripes on the bottom half. Black v White shorts is where you get your high contrast from.

From the 2014 game with both in home jumpers. Zoomed out way further than it would normally while play is on. 360p and Awful, awful quality, youtube compressed and still the white shorts are easy to tell apart from the black. So this is basically worse than the very worst it could possibly be on Saturday.
Richmonds yellow stands out even more than it did here and it would be much better quality and zoomed way closer.

you are kidding, right?
Such a non issue... Perhaps Richmond should of finished 1st, then it would not be a question. Look on the bright side, you finished 2nd and get home ground advantage. I would bet if they said to Richmond at the start of the year, "listen, we can guarantee you a GF spot, but you will have to wear a clash a jumper" they would of jumped at it. If the way you play is going to be dictated by which jumper you wear then it really doesn't matter, you are gone anyway.

To those saying "classic jumpers" I mean that just sounds so tarded considering the Guernsey is made out of different material than 20 years ago even... If you mean to say classic COLOURS? Well, I still posit that the way the jumpers look these days, the change in colour (wasp yellow vs how it looked in the 90's when last Richmond was a meaningful fixture in finals) all make for a modern look and NOT at all 'traditional' -- I had assumed the Richmond clash strip was hideous like the West Coast Eagles one is... but in truth the Richmond clash outfit is decent. And they'll make it look really sleek and professional for the GF edition I'm sure.

When the Dockers rebranded their jumpers in 2012 the "clash" was made the away white Guernsey by default. And that has been a good template. No one looks at Fremantle and thinks "ewww it's their clash strip" because we play every second game in it. And we wore it in our only GF already. It's as much a part of our history as our purple one for this reason.

I think people conflate "history" for tradition. ANZAC Day between Essendon and Collingwood is now a traditional match. It wasn't in 1999 but we have 20+ years of history behind it now -- Long story short things that aren't traditional can be made so through history. Richmond have a really decent looking Clash strip now (didn't before) and so this issue isn't much of a deal to the appearance of the GF. And won't be in 20 years if they keep playing in GF's in whatever strip they require.

I think the ultimate lesson for all clubs is you better start making quality clash strips that will stand up to GF appearance (traditionally...kek... clubs haven't!)

So according to you, if the jumper doesn't matter then why even bother with them at all. Why don't we just use blue shirts for the home team and red ones for the away team in every game because as long as your playing well and winning the supporters will be happy to watch the team play every week.

Come on, there's over 100 years of culture in the jumper you wear just like there is in the name of the club which is what 100's of thousands of footy supporters turn up to watch every year. I still go and watch my team play when were on the bottom of the ladder because I've got a love for the club, after that we hope to see them win games. I don't go and watch any old team play just because their on the top of the ladder.

Going on the AFL's love of clash jumpers that look nothing like the real strip what will be next clash names?
