Autopsy Richmond defeats Geelong by 3 points

Ok, but still.. are you saying don't make finals/go out in 1st rd and get an easier draw next year.?

As far as I've seen recently, we get fkd over whatever, regarding the draw.

Am I saying? No . For me if we get there ..you get there to win. I think losing finals has limited benefit.. its has the potential to create scar tissue.

And its not exact..Richmond had a very easy fixture this year.

It’s unravelling for you. Whilst your arrogant coach is talking about Richmond all the time and how much better than them the cats are, they are marching towards back to back flags and Geelong are likely to miss the 8. Richmond probably don’t want to play my boys, or GWS but tipping they aren’t too worried about Geelong. Bye !!
Your boys were spanked by richmond. Collingwood lost by more in one game against them that what we did in 2.

I reckon leave him here. There is obviously something wrong with his life and he can find help here. I'm a good listener.

I posted a few times on the main board about how Richmond are unsettled by us and would rather play collingwood or hawthorn in September then decided to leave the thread as it was Flooding my notifications. Kept logging on to about 15+ notifications each time thinking holy crap what’s going on here.

Now they feel the need to create an account and come on the Geelong board to follow me.

Didn’t realize how badly I worked some of these unusual people off.

Some late observations from Friday’s game -

Them -
- IMO , Tigers have a second (or even third) gear - if they brought their GF level pressure we would have been smashed.
But they didn't, even when the game was on the line. Give the boys some credit, Richmond were playing to win as much as we were. They're the "fourth quarter specialists" (credit: David King ;)), yet never put their foot down on the pedal. hmmmmm

Us
- ignore the fact we could have pinched it.
Ignore the scoreboard and everyone can be a winner. That's some gold coast level crap.

We lost. We didn't get the 4 points. That's the fact to take away.

We are the closest team to Richmond at the MCG this season
Carlton - L 26
Hawthorn - L 13
Lions - L 93
Dees - L 46
Pies - L 43
Freo - L 77
Dons - L 71
Geelong - L 18
Adelaide - L 47
Pies - L 28 (improved from earlier in the season)
Cats - L 3 (improved from earlier in the season)

That's the 2nd fact to take away.

We did not allow Richmond to go to this mythical "next gear" everyone keeps harping on about. If Richmond is so good, why did they keep giving up 4 goal leads in the 2nd and 3rd Q's? Why could Abblett have kicked the winner if Richmond have another "gear" that keeps a result out of reach?

Also, super disciplined with their defensive structures and running to cover space, the 25 metre miskick from the contest and block opponents.

-They have such clean hands and reliable short kicking skills. We are miles off this (with exception of Kelly, who is elite with hands below the knees).

-Their small/mediums are super quick decision makers and pace wise off the first 5 metres. They also have a knack of getting away with such a super quick first step after taking possession the umps don’t appear to see it and don’t penalise them. Massive advantage as all upside - I’d tackle doesn’t stick they can effect a shot on goal or take away, if tackle sticks then ball up.

- their players got away with blatant blocking on Hawk and others but if you can perfect it, then really - all credit to them.

Us
- ignore the fact we could have pinched it. We lost and got smacked in the i50s. If you wanting to use Friday of a measure of were we are at, we are miles off the attributes set out above. Problem is a mix of issues - recruiting, bad luck with injuries hitting two of our best pressure players/tacklers (McCarthy and Cocky), lack of experience/ confidence and some coaching decisions. Can’t rely on Cocky and co to come back - will take a while ( maybe 2 seasons) to recruit and organically address these issues.

- so much reliance on our top 6 or 7 players, opposition can plan to concede to these players and focus on winning back and rebound.

- The good news - Reason for both our good patches was that Danger, Duncan, Joel and Menegola all dropped back deep into defence and were able to move the ball quickly through the corredor where Kelly and others could step the few Tigers who could get back quickly. Should try this again against the Hawks.

- great to see yet another player (Abbott) given a go and do well - Could have just defaulted to Smith. Backing Henry and other new players, Kelly and players such as Stewart and Blitz going to the next level has been the high points of the year.
Their pressure was the highest for the year and 4th created the most forward half turnovers ever recorded

Agree thought Guthrie was ok
Need one of Fogarty, Jones, parfait to stand up like Higgins
Be great if we had a small forward that is instinctive and wants to kick goals. Fog very unreliable, Parfait gets time and space but not the range of a chappy who could snap one around the corner from 35m out regularly. Jones likewise. Seems to be a stack of them pop up elsewhere but not at the cats

I’m sure it’s been discussed previously but why do we wait for the last 10 minutes of a game (or until the game looks out of reach) to actually play a good match winning brand of football?
If U listen to cats podcast of last week Ling asked 2E same thing..he said U cannot do it and U run the risk of being opened up and going 30 points down in Q1, something I recall we all hated last 2 years. Seems to be fixed but maybe the pendulum swung to far

If I'm reading this right, Menegola had a career best game against the Tigers, according to the Player Ratings.

No matter what... the next time we play Richmond..its going to bigger than Ben hur. CS has talked it up better than Connor McGregor... and I suspect the Rich follower will bite harder than Black Piranha.

One would have to say its very much against the grain to the AFL norm. Its probably given them some ammunition ..but he must have known what he was doing

I’m not sure why you would give the opposition any possible ammo?

Sounds like the words of a desperate man.

Watch the last two minutes - things to note.

1. Guthrie getting lost when defending Richmonds kickout - that was his whole night in a nutshell. Ended up in no mans land contributing nothing while Richmond managed to get more numbers to the contest and get an easy clearance.
2. Failure for players to go front and square - happens twice in key moments. Watch how Richmond players setup in a contest - always players front and square - stuff taught in the under 10s
3. Guthrie getting lost again during the last tap in the centre - ends up standing next to Selwood while his direct opponent receives a tap straight down this throat.

Thanks for that but it's the same old story unfortunately.

Guthrie looks for opportunities to get lost, he's non-competitive and likes it that way. Ultimately it's accepted behaviour, the club accepts it.

We reap what we sow as a club. While we accept mediocrity we'll be mediocre.

Such a shame when you watch Joel squeezing every last drop of competitiveness out of himself in that game, what a champion.

I'm a bit surprised to see complaints about the umpiring here - anyone who thinks the umpires cost us on Friday is delusional. Yes a couple of decisions didn't go our way, but quite a few did as well. I thought we got the best of the umpiring overall.

I'm actually pretty heartened by that performance. They might have been missing a couple, but Stewart, Cockatoo, Stanley (in current form), Taylor, McCarthy are all best 22 players for us who weren't there on Friday. Even Ratugolea on the form he showed before he went down.

We also showed massive guts IMHO to come back (again) in the last quarter and almost get there. Sure the Tigers didn't look as good as they have in some other games, but maybe that had something to do with what their opposition were doing?? I think their defensive structures and pressure around the ball are clearly the best in the comp and that's why we ended up overhandballing and turning it over a lot. I thought our pressure around the ball was pretty good - they're just amazingly clean under pressure - but our defensive structures are way behind theirs (especially on the 'G) and I think the coaching group need to tighten that up on our end to give us a better chance against them. Despite those disadvantages though it was sheer determination from our players that had us right in it with a chance to win. Loved the effort!

We got the best of the umpiring no doubt.

Plenty of folks on here don't hide the fact they accept mediocrity from our players. When you do that you need to find someone else to blame, umpires are the obvious target.

The rest of us live in reality.
