We have a real problem.

We haven't ever recovered as a viable scoreboard threat since Jack Riewoldt announced his retirement August 15th 2023.

How do we solve it?

I'm not trying to trap you here or whatever but how many scores have we kicked between 90 and 100 in that time?

Our highest scores this year

R04 - 90 vs Bris (Loss)
R01 - 82 vs Carl (win)
R09 - 81 vs wce (win)
R06 - 80 vs gcs (win)
R12 - 77 vs gws (loss)
R10 - 74 vs nm (loss)

Then scores of 68, 63, 58, 56, 54, 53, 52, 47, 46 (win vs ess), 44, 36

getting 100 points 15.10+ nowadays, is the equivalent of the old 20.15.135
it's not a major issue now because our defence is almost sorted.

massive chance against weagles as they have a depleted forward line and midfield so hopefully Adem throws off the shackles and we can bang on a big score. hotton and taranto 4 each ;)

the million dollar question to your question is, how many teams have kicked over 20 goals against us in the same period, the answer is not many

Hocking by feathering the cat's Nest with complicated and unnecessary rule changes has stuffed it up for everyone.

Our set shot conversion is farkin atrocious

I remember back in the day players would take 100s of set shots after training when fatigued like how they’re taken on game day. Now sports science has ruled that out for muscle recovery so you just end up with a bunch of athletes who can’t kick. It’s a league wide thing but we should really go the other way on it

If we get more injuries so what just add them to our massive pile. Whoever is fit will damn sure be able to nail a shot

The only way to fix it is time.

time for the current crop of forwards to develop, grow, learn their craft and get better at the level.

Unfortunately our forward line is the most inexperienced line of the ground for us, no short terms fixes there.

That being said, our inaccuracy in front of goal when we do have chances isn't great either.

we should be converting more opportunities to score 65+ more often as a starting point.

Option 1:
Yze and the coaches devise a brilliant gameplan to utilise our current midfield and forward line to score more. (If that is even possible with current players)
Option 2:
We continue to build the list until the young stars develop enough to do it with Yze's current gameplan.

The issue isn’t as bad as it appears as the factors causing our low scoring are likely to address themselves in the next 12-24 months.

The number 1 issue is scoring output from tall forwards. Our tall forwards have collectively scored 38 goals while we have played 3 in almost every game. Of note is that Armstrong was averaging a goal a game before injury (small sample size).

Our small forwards are going alright but are potentially being hindered by our inexperienced/younger tall forwards. Campbell will go close to 30 goals which would be a great return.

Our lack of a star goal scorer is also notable this year. We may already have the new star goal scorers in Lalor and/or Hotton which could change things quickly.

Contributions from Banks, Brown and HRS are positives.

Our scoring over the next 2 seasons could significantly improve. 2nd year talls often have a significant increase, and then a further increase in their 3rd year.

If Faull + Armstrong can average 1+ goals a game alongside Lynch next year, it would go a huge way towards our overall scoring increasing. A fit Lalor and Hotton would also pump up our scoring threat.

A strong defensive team probably wants to average around 13 goals a game/300 goals for the season. You generally would need to find 2/3s of these goals from 6-7 players.

Our rough targets for our top 7 scorers should be roughly the following:

Faull - 25
Armstrong - 25
Lynch - 30
Campbell - 30
Mansell - 20
Lalor - 25
Hotton - 20

Alger could be a surprise packet to add to the group, and you never know who else might step up. Lots to look forward to!

We’re shit and in the process of rebuilding. Don’t stress about this. I vividly remember Carlton fans giving their club a standing ovation in the back end of their rebuild after Sam Walsh kicked a goal for them to get them to 100 points in a game against norf. One of the most pathetic things I’ve ever seen.

It’s not that big of a deal.
