I don't think we're a bottom 5 side, nowhere near it (touch wood), just that at times on the weekend we played like one.
We do play as a bottom 4 side more than I'd like, but we've also played as a top 4 side about twice as often this year, so it evens out to about 6th-8th position.

And yes, the wind was a huge factor against North. Ended up being 6.11 at one end of the ground, 20.9 at the other.

I expect a win this week. I believe the team running out this week is better than the one that got a draw against the Tigers in the final game of 2012. I do think Richmond can beat us but I think that will only happen if we let them. Play a good, hard, running, attacking game right from the word go and we should win.

I think our defence matches up well against them and we have players that can do a job against their prime movers in Cotchin and Deledio. I back Ollie to go head to head with Martin over 4 quarters. Will be interesting to see if Maric gets up as I heard he was limping toward the end of their last game, he would be a massive out for them.

I saw some numbers of what we have done to teams after quarter time and in the second half and we are destroying teams but our starts are killing us. Get this right this week and be ahead or within a goal and I back us to run over them.

As for it being an 8 point game, I think that talk is best reserved for closer to when the 8 starts to take shape. I reckon it will be a great game too.

On Saturday I made this image, concatenating all of Port's score worms (only the first 5 rounds, the match against North was still in progress when I made it). It's a very interesting graphical representation of our performance:

I might make one that stacks all of our scores onto one worm, one time scale, see what that looks like.

this thread is weird (more so the replies). we can and should play finals, and richmond are a team we should take it up to.

anyone scared of the tigers? no? thought so.
So Much This.........

If our goal isn't finals then whats the point of even competing in the competition..........

Yeah we need to develop a list and get experience into the group as a whole and adapt to the game plan and all the other cliches that get bandied about at struggling clubs, but if we are not aiming at finals as a club and as a supporter base then whats the point........

This game is about how the new look (old) PAFC responds to a loss. Nothing more, nothing less. Forget the points, the game we bring to the table on saturday will tell us all we need to know about the reality of our finals aspirations this year. We need to become a team that refuses to accept strings of losses.

FYI, every team with a percentage above 100 will go up, and everyone below 100 will go down, if that's what you're getting at.

I'm well aware of that, but the percentage only shows you a straight line, whereas concatenating the worms can give a lot more of an insight.

I actually made it after I made a joke on r/afl about Port's season-long score worm being a sine wave (because of our poor starts to matches and great finishes), but I do find it a really fascinating means of graphically displaying a large amount of information in an easily digestible format. Remember that that single image contains literally every single scoring shot Port or their opponents have made this season, in order.

Then think about how easy it is to understand.

I was nerdy enough to look at it and think about doing an FFT of it, so I know what you mean.

hmm yes with Essendon playing Geelong there's a chance for us to go equal top with one other.. until the Hawthorn Sydney game the next day! winning this game IS crucial to our season, and it gets even tougher from here. picking up points in these big games is vital.

Actually the interesting one for me out of that is for all our come backs, except for the GWS game in the last half of the last quarters we've largely stopped relative to the opposition. We haven't piled on 2 - 3 extra goals in junk time against anyone to really establish dominance over 4 quarters. Is it our fitness gets us 95% of the way there, then fades right at the death? Or are doing the (hated) let the opposition catch their breath, rather then crush them mercilessly?

From what I've seen, it's that Port put in 110% to pile on as many goals as possible before the opposition can really react, and run themselves ragged so they can get a few goals buffer for when the opposition catches on and tries to wrestle the match back. It's actually a really good strategy: if you try to even out your fitness over the entire final quarter, the opponent's coach will be able to react. If you put in everything you've got in the first ten minutes, you've got a lead already, and enough momentum to hold them off.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Which also bodes well that with another pre-season under their belts our players should be able to continue crushing the opposition across the whole game, not have to stop 10 - 15 minutes short. 2014 is going to be a great year :)

didn't lead me to 'disappoint' the first five rounds.. I came into the season supremely confident. you must remember what it means to be a Port supporter.

How 'bout the sixth?

Think of it like this:

Yes, we should always hope to win, but not expecting to is hardly a crime.
I Want my team to be angry when they loose, not just shrug their shoulders and go well we expected to loose any way.

Aiming some where in the middle for fear of failure is bullshit , theses are not 3rd graders doing some naplan "don't hurt my feelings " Cotten wool warped ,everyones equal ******* y gen love fest"

Good luck this weekend Port. I admire how your football club has gone about things in the offseason and turned everything around. It's literally gone from pity to respect in a matter of 8 months. I'll admit that I thought you guys would struggle a lot this year and I'm very happy to be so far proven wrong. Looking forward to what should be a great contest. :thumbsu:

One of Geelong or Essendon will remain undefeated and four points clear of us regardless of whether we win. They are on 24 points, we are on 20...the highest we go is equal second.
