Troy Chaplain interview on SEN

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-07-28/lack-of-midtier-talent-holding-tigers-back-says-chaplin

A WEEK after announcing his immediate retirement from AFL football, Richmond defender Troy Chaplin says a lack of mid-tier talent is what is holding the club back from success.

Chaplin said there was frustration within the playing group that had claimed the scalps of the League's best teams in recent years, but failed to fire in the finals.

"Obviously you can't keep going back to the well if you can't get over the line, so we've got to try something different, add some new players too – so that's what they'll be looking at this year," Chaplin told SEN on Thursday.

Richmond triumphed over a previously undefeated Fremantle side in round 10 last year as well as eventual premiers Hawthorn in round 18, only to lose for a third straight year in the first week of the finals.

"I think that's where the frustration lies, especially internally as players ... it's exactly the same group and the same 22 that took us to those spots, it's just that we couldn't get over the line," Chaplin said.

"Our top five are really great players, we need that middle tier coming through."

Chaplin said the Tigers, who won't make the finals in 2016, are lacking players in their mid to late twenties.

"Between 23 and 29, we don't really have many players in that age group and that's what is probably going to help us going forward," he said.

"You don't want to go full rebuild, we've got some younger guys coming through, we just lack a little bit of class."

Richmond takes on Greater Western Sydney in Canberra on Saturday.

SAID this the other day, we will be back to where we were when Wallace said exactly this same thing during his reign - the lack of 24-28 year olds.
Hardwick declared we smashed the last two drafts, it's the lack of fruit from the previous four that is hurting this club now and will for at least two more years. That'll be branded 'negative' again, but it's reality. This club will continue to live and die off the boot of its top half dozen for a while yet!

As Jacko would say, Chaplin is little more than a false alarmer.

At the end of the day Jacko was associated with a side than won a premiership in 1980, Chaplin is a neville nobody.

Obviously to get back to the golden years we need to ride on the tails of the likes of Markov and co and draft other stars that will burst through in the next few years!!

To give Dusty a chance we need to draft to well and support the likes of Rioli and C Ellis are coming through

There are plenty of 24-28 year olds, that includes Jack, Cotch, Rance, Yarran, Dusty, plus a couple more, but the quality v non-quality ratio of these sorts vs the rest you could argue, certainly.

IMO the gap is between the 21yo and under, eg Lennon draft and back, up to likes of Dusty (25yo) and Cotch (26yo). We have Vlausy and McIntosh and that's about it.

The crazy thing about Chaplin going on about 23-29 is if he never rocked up the recruits from 23 and less would be a lot better from higher draft picks.

Amazing one of the instigators is indirectly blaming the ineffectiveness of his own input on team future prospects IMO!

Is Chaplin saying he should have tanked so the list would be far better instead of meaningless finals flirtations?

You see, I agree with that. Our last two drafts actually look promising, but prior to that reasonably thin. Lennon getting fit might help, same with Conca.
But essentially yes, the quality we drafted in those GWS/Gold coast drafts were ordinary.
It's one of the main reasons I'm not seeing the solution as knifing the coach.
We need to buy in quality. Maybe a free agent, maybe just a tap on the shoulder to a contracted player that's quality.

In fact there are 21 players who if they all stay will be aged between 24 and 28 come the first round next year. they are supposed to be the cornerstone to success mature players in their prime.
If they stay we also have three vets 29 plus at the start of the first round next yr. Hampson, Maric and deledio.

These two groups are supposed to be the ones who can take us to a premiership. Trouble is as Chaplin says and you point out there is a dramatic drop of after the first 6 or so players.

The problems are compounded because so few of the 18 - 23 yr olds that is the juniors and early development players have shown enough to suggest they are any better.

I knew we would be ****ed for years when around years 1999-2000 jim malone said on radio , I have a theory that you need to nail your early Draft picks , holy ******* s**t Einstein I yelled when I smashed my radio, he was a ******* tiger gm or there abouts.

Another post you've nailed, people forget that Wallace said exactly the same thing seven years later we still lack those 24 year olds
