Nick Fitzroy were a minnow. Richmond are a giant. OK a giant in distress and going awfully with a crap team of crap players who are taking the piss but Richmond are a giant and are going nowhere and merging with no one. They aren't taking games to Tassie or Carrara. They are simply going to wait til it turns around.

Fitzroy didn't merge - they went bankrupt and were given to the Brisbane.

Brisbane had finsihed 8th and 3rd in the two years BEFORE the merger. They weren't a struggling team - they were a team on the rise. The merger didn't deliver them Leigh Matthews.

Chris Johnson and the father-son rights to Jon Brown were the only two Roys players to be part of the premiership sides.

The merger had very very little to do with Brisbane becoming a strong side.

Every time the merger talk comes up the same myths are spruiked.

The idea is that somehow 1 + 1 = 3.

In reality in a merger 1 + 1 = 1.2 (or something like that).

You don't get twice as many draft picks, twice as many home games, twice as many games on TV, twice as many corporate boxes or reserved seats to sell. You don't get twice as many major sponsors. You don't get double the salary cap to work with, or double the list size.

Every merger model the AFL has talked about has placed heavy restrictions on salary caps and which players can be taken. There is no way your team could be afforded. You don't get to chose the best 11 from each side.

In reality a merger would probably see guys a lot of reasonable players thrown on the open market - with the result that you'd strengthen the other 14 teams as well. You'd see Thursfield go free to another club, you'd see Kade Simpson be gifted to the Eagles.

Merging with the Blues would see us aquire all their debt.

There might be a short-term spike in success - but long term you'd be just one of the 15 teams with the same draft picks and salary as everyone else. There is no guarentee your finances would improve because plenty would abandon you and no one would dig into their pockets to 'donate' to a corparation.

Mergers haven't happened because the numbers don't add up.

merger is simply ridiculous. Either club with any sort of team at all would get average crowds well in excess of 40,000.

Clubs merge for financial reasons, not because they're playing crap (though if one continues for too long, the other inevitably follows).

We are in a financially stable position these days (though not a financial powerhouse by any means) even if we're not performing on-field.

We won't be merging with anyone and I'd be absolutley horrified if we did.

No supporter would ever want to merge and you would probably hate it just as much but to mention it is just wrong. Then you went onto say that it would be a good idea...

For starters richmond one of the melbourne 4 powerhouses has had one of there best membership numbers in years, they are also now out of debt. If you think merging with another club is going to make the players suddenly start winning games then you have another thing coming. All these threads saying sack TW, Get rid of certain players it's all bullshit. TW has 5 years, im not going to judge him untill hes had them 5 years. It's easy to criticise players when there not winning, but i bet half the people on this forum would be ackowledging the players if we were winning games. Most people think that they run the club on here, and that they should be the coach.

But i still come on here for the 10% of good threads.
