In the kane johnson-Wayne Carey deal, they gave up torney and their first three picks (4, 20 and 36) to adelaide whom admittedly gave them their first 3 picks (14, 30 and 45) but ... I don't think Johnson really was worth the 4th pick in the draft and they badly needed to use that early pick to secure another young midfielder Coughlan type player or another tall marking defender, but no, they chose to squander it and another very good player on Kane Johnson whom is admittedly a good player, but has suffered injury problems the last few years. If i Was a Tiger fan i would be ticked off. Especially if the player the Roos use with the 4th pick turns out to be a gun .

Yes but you would think pick 4 is worth a lot more than pick 14 and in addition jason torney is a big loss. Plus the other picks are still later on than the ones they orginally had. I'm not saying they did a bad deal technically, but perhaps they have hurt the depth of their list as you can't be sure Johnson is going to fire for the Tigers anyway.

Still possible for everyone to win out of this situation

Crows will see next season if they win or not while the Roos will take a bit longer - Tigers get a bit of both - still keep a (slightly lower) first round pick but also get a quality player

In fact by the time the roos have a chance to see if they have turned out to have drafted the right players, everyone will know if the Crows got their money's worth with Carey

You are kidding. Johnson has plenty left in him. They still have a reasonable draft choice option. Pick 4 could be anything and it could be Alex McDonnald or Fiora. Mortgaging your future is what your club for years and now they have barley a glimmer of one left.

Thats a good deal for Tiges and Roos. Im not so sure about the Crows. They will be laughing if Carey delivers a Flag. But I really rate Johnson.

I'm not too unhappy with this deal, but I'm really confused that Richmond wanted to off-load Torney because they couldn't fit him under their salary cap, but now they've got Johnson. Surely Johnson would be paid a lot more than Torney

Richmond have been interested in Johnson since at least last year, so I think it was a case of not having enough salary cap room for Torney if they picked up a player like Johnson. I think that and the fact Torney would interest other clubs were the reasons he was put on the market. I'm sure there were other players Richmond would have prefered to swap but they were either contracted and/or wouldn't get any bites.

I think it is wheat that glimmers, not barley. Fiora will be a good player. Not all draft picks are walk up starts - some take a few years to develop. He will just take a bit longer than some other players who have a bigger frame. If he doesn't step up next year, then I may start agreeing with you.

I still do.

Well, not quite. With having got Jeff White, I see why they didn't want another ruckman.

However, Ottens is still definitely the more proven of the two, and with the higher trade value.

But it is less clear cut than it was. Ottens = ordinary year Johno= good year. Suddenly pick looks better.

Fiora= Good year next year and suddenly pick looks better.

Has a lot of Potential. Needs better guidence

well said. As you would all know trading hasnt finished so there is no loss.. yet. Richmond may or may not trade really well. Teams like the Kangaroos may pick up another player like Bourke. Next year you will see that if a team has traded well or not. The trading game isnt over yet - its only the second day.

Torney wanted to go back to Adelaide. Johnson wanted to go to Melbourne.

Who cares about trade value if you dont want to trade the player. I think Melbourne are happy enough kee[ing Johnstone.

The Kangaroos gain some early draft selections, but that is always a risk. What if they turn out to be duds? There are plenty of top-5 picks that don't live up to potential. Draft picks are generally the way to go, but in exchange for a player like Carey, I'd want one or two established young players (such as a Kane Johnson) who can play ten years for your club.

The Roos will be biting their nails hoping the draft picks end up being good players. There are no guarantees.

This would be the same draft pick that you would not give up under any circumstances yesterday. Now it is gone and a draft pick is now not so valuable.

Oh yes, when you give up draft selections they are a gamble and you could have selected a dud anyway. When you have them they are a 10 year champion.

Now we have draft picks 4, 20 and his contract payed out.

And besides he is a Rooboy and will come home where he belongs eventually.

Obviously you win out of the deal because you lose a player who wasn't going to play for you anyway, so whatever you gain is an added bonus. But ordinarily, unless you can off-load some fringe talent for some draft picks, it's always a bit of a gamble.
