Someone on the main board in a thread seemed to indicate it has been reported Chaplin is on something like 500K for 4 years!

That can't be right??? Could it???

Can't see that being right given he was a restricted FA and Port chose not to match what we offered him.

He may have a front loaded contract which would make sense we will probably have a few younger players wanting more coin in the coming 12-24 months as they progress and develop. Think I heard or read when we got him it would be something like $400k a season (front loaded) for 4 years.

To be honest, that's what free agency is.
People will get overpaid. Wouldn't suprise me if he's on something like that.

Interesting to look at our current list. We need to make a minimum of 3 changes at the end of each year and atm it is difficult to do that...

I would assume at this early stage that:

Derrickx - gone
White - pretty much gone

Who else?
A.Edwards (forgot to look at his contract status)
I'm thinking Nahas could be trade bait
Newman may retire if his form drops off by the end of the season and he's no longer getting a game
McGuane could be trade bait if his form continues (not saying we should just possibly) as we may have ready replacements for him (Elton, Griffiths, Astbury) and also McBean.

Of the younger guys....
Helbig and Arnott will be hoping for more game time but Arnott may well be being groomed for replacing Tuck (as will Vlastuin) when Tucky retires in 2023:)

I know it's ages until decision time but thoughts given we must make at least 3 changes?

Round 2 and making list decisions!! You must have a supercharged crystal ball!!!

I know it's very early, but would the club think there are a few players surplus to our requirements for next year?
Tradeable/reduced $ contracts?

Richmond has signalled confidence in the future of Dustin Martin at the club by instigating contract talks aimed at securing Martin, skipper Trent Cotchin and Coleman medallist Jack Riewoldt in coming weeks.
The Tigers hope to have that talented trio - regarded as three of their top four - signed over the next month, along with emerging defender Dylan Grimes and key back Alex Rance.
But contract talks with Martin are less advanced than those with Cotchin, whom the club has indicated it is willing to sign on a long-term deal, but who also has the option of signing a two-year deal that would make him a restricted free agent at the end of 2015.

Saw that this morning too _RT_ - thanks for sharing it.

Is anyone else a bit concerned by this bit?

The Tigers are facing pressure on their salary cap, which is already tight, due to having elite players coming out of contract this year and also the handicap of having very little extra space created by the veterans allowance.

Given we cleaned out the list and cleared a lot of the senior players, I'm not sure how our cap could already be under some pressure? There was a lot of talk on here last year if we should have thrown our hat into the ring for Goddard and Cloke - if this article is on the money, then we probably couldn't afford either (and probably can't consider going for any 'big fish' this year either). I can't imagine a lot of the younger guys being on massive pay packets (relative to what other similar aged players would be getting elsewhere) and while we would be paying our stars like Lids (and Cotch, Martin and Jack) decent money, I just am not sure how the squeeze could already be on - does that mean we might need to let a few players go due to cap pressures before we even become a regular finals side?
Gus was apparently on a big contract so offloading him to the crows should have helped relax the cap a bit too I would have thought.

I cant really see how we could possibly be under cap pressure !
McGuane & Graham were on big dollars but thats no longer the case
Foley's contract was sorted last year and with his injuries the past 2 years - I cant see him on more than say $350k
Lids signed for 5 years @600k and Grigg,Houli,Maric were all on the $1 mill over 3 year packages
Tuck & Newman - Wont be on bank breakers either
Rest are all kids developing apart from the Riewoldt,Martin,Cotchin - who are all due

Only way that we could be tight with our Cap is if we have heavily front loaded the Delidio,Maric,Chaplin,Knights,Grigg,Houli deals
