I’ve never been a fan of clubs receiving additional assurance in recent years.
It should have stopped after the first round of North handouts.

In saying that, Richmond should receive the same compensation as what West Coast did based on similar criteria.

I’d be fine if they got an extra end of first round pick over the other clubs at the end of the year. Use that on an established player - it needs to be a ruck man.

Then additional rookie list spots to do something similar to what West Coast did. Pick the best local league and speculative draftees.

I was deadset against the Lions getting a priority pick given they won 3 in a row early 2000's. People forget very quickly the successes a team has had once they spend a couple of years down the bottom. Same for the Tiges. Any talk of a priority pick for us is not warranted.

It's up to the Tigers to get the young kids on the park and playing games (heckin' injuries killing us at the moment), develop them well and support them with senior players who are not at the tail end of their careers (or that are SLOW which is a killer in today's game style). You can be mature but not slow.

And we need a ruckman as Meteoric pointed out. It's obvious that our back up ruckmen are not up to AFL standard. In fact, far from it. Just think of what Gawn is going to do to us this weekend.

Yet your club can bring in 3 double premiership players, Baker, Graham, Starcevich in the prime years while at the bottom of the ladder because they're from W.A and there is only 2 teams they can come home to.

Something North would have loved to do 3 years ago when we had good kids but about 2 players over 27 that were AFL quality.

Swings and roundabouts

3 fringe premiership players chasing their last pay cheque.

Just like Jack Darling, Caleb Danial and Luke Parker. 3 x premiership fringe players. You picked up two seasons ago.

What was your point again?

Lol at calling those double, not single premiership players fringe. Starcevich was a mainstay in the defence of back of back premiership was 25 when recruited. Baker is a leader and a bloody good player. Graham is solid. They were 27 when picked up. To compare them to 2 32 year olds and a 28 year old midget is laughable.

If you want to talk about fringe players talk about Devon Robertson another bloke you got back because he's from WA.

Let's face it your rebuild should be easier because these sort of players would never leave for any other wooden spooners, so stop sooking about not being able to trade blokes out because they'd have to move away, which was what the post I responded to was saying.

You've been bad for 3 years.

Come back next year.

But once West Coast got it for having such a bad year last year, it sort of set in place that no team can be like that without extra support. And unfortunately we seem to be on our way to a similar season.

As long as we use the support the same way West Coast did I’ll be happy.

With the new rules around getting an EOFY for bidding, Tigers will get their PP without even having to ask.

Must be nice...
Have these been confirmed?
And does it mean just the tigers get it? I thought it was for any club that was affected that had a top five draft pick.

North took a decade to recover. Brisbane gut their list after their first run and paid their price

For Richmond they sold the farm to get Taranto and Hopper back in 2022 shortly after making the finals
This was a costly move but I think the damage created by Hardwick's martial breakdown and then dumping the whole team overnight was disastrous culturally.

Hardwick is an excellent coach and very hard to replace. Losing him was huge. The impact created by his loss immeasurable.

The club is still recovering.

I have a fundamental dislike of priority picks anyway but especially if a team with recent success decides to essentially sell off almost all of its assets for a raft of relatively high draft picks and that decision hasn’t reaped the benefits they hoped it would.

That was a huge, huge risk that backfired.

I think it was slightly more nuanced. We had a backlog of experienced players who had tested the waters to leave during the Hardwick era, but decided to stay for success

Once they got a whiff of the Yze era they decided to jump ship, & we didn't stand in their way. I think fair enough in some ways to avoid a Merrett like saga

I think the strategy was risky, but our big failing has been in key off-field appointments in the post-Gale/Penny era. They have been bad. Our footy dept (especially conditioning & recruiting) have performed woefully

need a big clean-out off-field to support (& encourage retention) of our developing kids

So less time than both North and WCE and you already want PPs/assistance, 6 years after winning your third flag in 4 years?

Ok...

What happened to the 'perfect' rebuild that was spruiked by media everywhere?

You have no idea.

North in Melbourne have 8 other clubs players PLUS returning Vic players PLUS non Vic players happy to play in Melbourne.

So the trade market is much bigger in Melbourne, that's where most the players live.

Now North has turned the corner expect quality players will now consider North.

BTW Stavevich is injured, yet to play and won't be available until mid season.

Graham was struggling to get a game at Richmond, as were Dev, Schoenberg and Macrae. Also injured......again.....missed a few last year as well. Good support for the kids though when fit.

Young coming back from an acl was going to struggle getting games with the kids being developed so chased a better contract.

All of them the very definition of a fringe player.

Baker, solid citizen, has a crack but lacks polished skills. Used as a Mr Fixit at Richmond and a small utility that provides intent. Certainly not an A grade talent and skill wise.

Sure all clubs will be getting it.

Awfully convenient for Richmond it's timed when they look to be finishing last this year so they don't have to ask for the same assistance WCE got last year and were roundly criticised for asking.

No I'm not saying it's the AFL doing Richmond a solid, I'm saying it actually is convenient for them they happen to be down the bottom. Most had them improving this year and WCE for spoon.

Well you and I are having a conversation, not you and myself representing everything anyone in the media says.

I wasn’t a fan of west coast getting assistance six years after winning a flag but they were so poor last year.

And Richmond are looking to go down a similar path.

You said last year the injuries to your older players exposed the team and created such poor performances. It didn’t mean the rebuild wasn’t going to plan. It just meant the team wasn’t competitive. The assistance was given to help make the Eagles more competitive than last year.

I’d rather they didn’t do this and gave Richmond the same assistance West Coast got.

Stuff ‘convenience’

Diluting the draft even further by handing out another four end of first rounders.

Please

They’re a whole one game behind us on the ladder

They’ve won three flags in the last decade. We haven’t won one for 26 years!

Give us a bloody priority pick!
AFL might make yet another rule change involving Richmond.

Sure but timeline-wise, Richmond shouldn't be in line for anything until next year at the earliest, based on recent precedence.

Don't worry.
Steve Hocking will be on the blower.

Why not the same support as North?

For the same criteria?

Three end of first rounders, a second and third (of which the latter two had to be traded) and two extra rookie spots?

That was super generous of the AFL but I think the West Coast compo is more realistic and prudent.
