He does make a point though amd you did not answer it. That does not do anything for your credibility either.....

No he didn't. He made a hypothetical that is ludicrous. There's no point even responding to it. And for the record, if one man decided to buy a membership for 200 million dollars, yes, with that money, that club could potentially be the biggest with all the investment that would come from that money. Not right away, but over time.

Revenue has been mentioned in the past few posts, so let's look into that as it is a more than reasonable metric to use when comparing relative sizes of organisations.

And just to be fair on the Tigers, we'll use by far their two most successful seasons in their medium term history - 2017 and 2018.

2017:
1. Collingwood $77.7 mil
2. Hawthorn $72.6 mil
3. West Coast $71.1 mil
4. Essendon $65.166 mil
5. Richmond $65.164 mil

2018:
1. West Coast $86.3 mil
2. Collingwood $82.1 mil
3. Richmond $79.8 mil
4. Hawthorn $75.2 mil
5. Bulldogs $69.7 mil

The term 'Sleeping Giant' was used for Richmond earlier by a number of posters, suggesting they would be a financial powerhouse once they got their act together on the field. However, in their two best seasons in a very long time, they still fall short of the likes of West Coast and Collingwood.

Collingwood in fact was the highest revenue earner in a year when they had their fourth consecutive season outside the finals, which is about as long as we go without being there at the pointy end of the season.

So Richmond may have been regarded as the 'Sleeping Giant', but Collingwood and West Coast are the 'Giants who never sleep'.

We’ve had enough with time wasted cleaning this thread from trolling comments. Recall that this week you were all reminded of the site’s rules which posters are required to agree to in order to partake in discussion.

Keep it up and you’ll find out the hard way.

This statement wasnt made for shits & giggles..

The problem with your logic is that it is flawed. Seriously flawed. Revenue often lags considerably behind on field success. The fact we had 37 years in the wilderness has weighed on our ability to increase revenue heavily. Our revenue will increase in the next few years because of our membership fueling new investments such as our Allied Leisure venture. That has taken a lot of start up money and has not brought in much yet but we are already starting to see it grow and when up and running will eclipse any previous investment we have made. Don't be surprised if we surpass everyone in 3 to 5 years. Then you'll know what "Giant" actually means.

Thank you. You have explained precisely why Richmond are not yet ready to be compared to the bigger teams in the AFL.

Winning games of football - contending for a sustained period of time - is possibly THE most important factor.

Last 61 years you have won 2 premierships. One more than St Kilda and 2 less than North Melbourne. That’s called Shitsville.

My point was about revenue. You're the one equating size with revenue. It is only one aspect of club size. Membership number is another.

When you take out pokies and gaming revenue richmond is the biggest club in the afl . Philosophically and ideologically richmond has very little revenue from gaming deliberately due to their leadership in the community

What is wce revenue compared to Richmond's without pokies and gaming?

That's kinda my point. They had $6m more in revenue than us in 2018 once pokies are removed

They had $6m more revenue *before* pokies were removed. What do Richmond turnover from outside footy? $10-20m?

West Coast are in a completely different league financially to every other AFL club.

Wrong on WCE being $6m more before pokies are removed. Below are The_Wookie financial summaries from 2018:

Firstly total revenues for 2018. Richmond is 4th largest, and $1.1m above WCE

Revenue
  • Collingwood -$77,736,469
  • Hawthorn - $70,742,464
  • Essendon - $65,165,407
  • Richmond - $65,164,372
  • West Coast - $64,013,222
  • Carlton - $58,618,876
  • Port Adelaide - $57,907,188
  • Geelong - $57,804,052
  • Adelaide - $54,954,790
  • Brisbane - $52,060,420
  • Melbourne - $51,988,711
  • Western Bulldogs - $51,944,472
  • Sydney - $50,837,971
  • Fremantle - $49,263,474
  • St Kilda - $47,952,666
  • GWS - $42,605,892
  • North Melbourne - $39,717,822
  • Gold Coast - $39,656,365

Then you have gaming, and Wookie has conveniently removed all of the gaming revenues from this:

Gaming & Social Revenue
  • Collingwood - $22,887,477
  • Hawthorn - $19,087,366
  • Carlton - $18,825,869
  • Brisbane - $15,687,630
  • Essendon - $13,351,296
  • Melbourne - $11,641,049
  • Geelong - $10,537,358
  • Richmond - $7,180,170
  • Western Bulldogs - $7,061,232
  • St Kilda - $1,934,045
Revenue without Gaming
  • West Coast - $64,013,222
  • Richmond - $57,984,202
  • Collingwood - $54,848,992
  • Essendon - $51,814,111
  • Hawthorn - $51,655,098
  • Sydney - $50,837,971
  • Fremantle - $49,263,474
  • Geelong - $47,266,694
  • St Kilda - $46,018,621
  • Western Bulldogs - $44,883,240
  • GWS - $42,605,892
  • Melbourne - $40,347,662
  • Carlton - $39,793,007
  • North Melbourne - $39,717,822
  • Brisbane - $36,372,790
Where WCE destroy financially is profitability. This is because pokies need a decent turnover to cover their costs (total profits below, and profits from pokies below too - the the case of RFC $7m in pokies turnover delivers the club less than $1m in actual profit to use in the club)

Profit/loss
  • West Coast - $12,804,032
  • St Kilda - $5,267,414
  • Essendon - $5,054,186
  • Hawthorn - $4,933,128
  • Richmond - $3,063,298
  • Fremantle - $2,489,714
  • Melbourne - $1,363,060
  • Western Bulldogs - $1,643,050
  • Carlton - $667,803
  • Adelaide - $648,715
  • North Melbourne - $242,656
  • Sydney - $105,186
  • Gold Coast - $19,219
  • Geelong - ($339,849)
  • GWS - ($522,896)
  • Brisbane - ($2,261,990)
  • Collingwood - ($2,732,624)

Gaming Profit
  • Collingwood - $6,037,992
  • Brisbane - $3,744,228
  • Melbourne - $3,720,679
  • Carlton - $3,169,884
  • Essendon - $2,276,154
  • Western Bulldogs - $1,390,994
  • Richmond - $942,060
  • St Kilda - $616,340
  • Hawthorn - No costs available
  • Geelong - no costs available
  • Carlton - no costs available.
Finally you asked about Richmond's non-football revenue streaming (saying they were $10-20m).

AFL distributions and prize money $12,505,575
Gaming and hospitality 7,670,839
Stadium contributions and consumer products 29,645,214
Health, fitness and community groups 14,237,718
Sponsorship, fundraising and corporate products 15,450,025
Interest 194,666
Other 73,800

Its actually more at just under $22m, as the club is branching out into managing health centres and providing Swinburne uni courses so its less dependant upon onfield success to keep the club afloat

The sales from leisure are also growing very very quickley

It will be a multi million dollar stand alone business, it actually already is. Not sure any other club has such a revenue stream ,not linked to gaming

Apologies, I took it off the post above.

So on pure football revenues, the gap is around $20 million.

Pure football isn't equal

RFC don't get pourage rights, don't get most of the signage rights, only get to sell reserved seats for a small part of the ground (half is afl/MCC, the balance MCC retain a big portion for Ga sales and its own reserved seat sales), and can only increase reserved seating prices by so much because of competition from the AFL and mcc

I'm respectful of what the Eagles have done, which is why I pulled up the earlier poster on the RFC revenue claim, but like all things AFL it's not an equal comparison.
