Richmond - time for a rebuild?

Trade Bolton and rebuild ! Crime to play him in a rebuilding team.

Honestly they need to fix their forward line.

No KPF after Lynch. Mediums and smalls not good enough with Cumberland inconsistent,

Defence look well set with Balta, Tyler Young, Gibcus, Rioli.

Centre square mids are okay with Taranto, Hopper with Bolton rotating. Perhaps need to add a couple more who can rotate.

Need to get Wings and Forwards

Projecting forward what does the 2026 team look like?

Banks (23) Balta (27) Young (27)
Rioli (29) Gibcus (23) vlastuin (32)
Sonsie (23) Taranto (28) short (30)
Clarke (24) X Bolton (28)
Ryan (25) X. Rioli (24)

Nankervis (31) hopper (28) Baker (28)

I: T Brown (24) Ross (25)

trezise / Bauer / Cumberland / coulthard / Ralph-smith / 2025 1st round / Dow / other 2nd/3rd rounders.

Trades:
Graham - 2nd/3rd round pick
Soldo - 3rd round pick
Possibly Dow.

Defence: very good.
Midfield: good core, needing some of the young outside players like Sonsie, Clarke etc.. to continue to develop. Have seen signs but no certainties for those guys.

Forwards: clearly need key forwards.
Both drafting and recruiting.

If can recruit a good tall key forward like Collingwood (Mcstay) essendon (Wright) have done then things look a lot better. With this, and strong development of youngsters already on the list, can see top 6 potential by 2026

With one of those elements.. ie kids come on well but unable to secure a key forward via trade/free agency then sitting just outside top 8 with a contending list age profile in 2026.

With neither of those elements then a bottom 6 list in 2026.

Defence: very good.

That's extremely optimistic.

For that defence to be very good they need:

Balta to go from highly talented but inconsistent to star, Gibcus to get over his injuries and make it, Vlastuin to still be playing good footy at 32 and Banks and Young to develop into solid b-graders.

All that could happen. But equally Banks and Young are no guarantee to make it, Vlastuin could be retired, Balta might just never be a consistent gun and Gibcus has significant injury worries. It's similar chance that defence is very poor as very good.

They're cooked, a number old formerly good players are done, youth looks light on for quality.

Hardwick taking the piss resigning early, incoming coach beware

Why are all the coaching candidates pulling out. Is they don't think the list is good enough and it is a poisoned chalice and they won't see out the first contract. Or do they think McQualter has the job and they are wasting there time and harming there rep in the process.

The "poisoned chalice" option ✔

They know Richmond have a history of sacking coaches and eating their own when things aren't going great.
I don't blame them for pulling out when the position has coach killer written all over it.

This certainly doesn't help a rebuild:

Richmond get: Jacob Hopper, Pick 53(2022), pick 63(2022)
Richmond give: Pick 6(2023), Pick 31(2022)

Hurts big time.

They do need to start a rebuild but trading in Taranto/Hopper has stuffed their hand this year, unless they trade someone with currency out.

They'd want to start no later than next year though, so they get at least a couple of years in before Tasmania dilutes the draft.

Thankfully for them, they probably don't need to go down the path of WCE/North, as they still have enough young talent to remain somewhat competitive but it would be a disaster it they decided to keep topping up and then fall in a slump right as Tassie starts building its list.

They are lying to themselves by saying they only need a fresh game plan and a decent run with injury. They need to tip the joint upside down for the next 2-3 years before Tassie make it difficult.

The senior players are on the decline and no longer motivated, and rightly so.
They don't have enough good kids to replace the old guys, and they don't even play some of the ones they do have.

Need to hit the draft and trade for a bunch of 18-22 year olds over the next few years, and target the prime years of Taranto, Hopper, Bolton, Balta, Baker, Rioli, when those guys are 28-30. They will always be able to recruit good free agents to fill holes once they are ready. Not sure who they can move on for draft assets this year but they definitely need to do so.

That's equalisation doing its job. After 3 in 4 years they should be happy, but can't get complacent.

Tigs are in strife. No KPF's or elite young midfield talent coming through with no draft picks and Tassie coming in in the next few years. If they don't go at 100% strike rate in the first round over the next few drafts they could be West Coast levels of bad.

Not sure who would trade for him with his contract or how they'd get it done but Shai Bolton for 2 first rounders seems like a hard decision that could save them long term. Is Bolton the type who's going to thrive with no forwards or midfielders around him to work his magic?

While I don't disagree with most written here I do disagree that Tasmania will be the issue some think it is. Richmond (and some other clubs) were in pretty dire straits when both Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney came into the competition and we came out the other side pretty well in the end.

But you already had Cotchin Rance Reiwoltd and Dusty didn't you? Can't currently see those talents in ur list unless the next couple of years you find some at the pointy end

You need to have some senior bodies around the kids. look at all the experience we have lost the last few years, Grigg, Houli, Edwards, Lambert, Cotch & maybe Riewoldt.

I would say our drafting has been an area of concern we have not got right the last couple of years. other than last season we had been using our first pick to draft kids.

Oh I agree, I wouldn't be tossing anyone out unless their time is clearly up but it might be worth looking at certain players with currency and seeing if they have any value + wish to move.

You'd want to make sure any player leaving was spread evenly across lines though and it's not like you can push them out the door anyway.

According to Richmond fans, other teams are to blame for not getting in first and plucking Jacob Hopper. Some kind of superstar this injury-riddled B grader is.

Martin, Prestia, Lynch, Broad and Vlastuin likely won't be there the next time Richmond are contenders. Surely a couple of them have some currency to have more of a dip at this draft. Taranto, Bolton, Rioli, Short and Baker should be the core players that they build around with high quality youngsters.
