The next few years are going to be tough. If we don't win a game this year (which looks quite possible), we will at least lose some members. We're losing our biggest pokies venue, we're expanding our football department and have invested a share of the money required to develop cragieburn, the indigenous centre etc etc...If we want to keep developing and getting our off field stuff up to scratch we need to consider fundraising measures like moving a few home games to hobart. We all ripped on the hawks for doing it, but they've gone from on the verge of merging to a powerhouse and I give alot of credit to the launceston games. Generates alot of money both directly (gate receipts bigger than docklands, tasmania pays hawthorn) and indirectly (tassie members, merch, future tassie fanbase etc).

If we want to go anyway near realising the plans outlined by Benny the club needs to be viable. It would be remiss of the club to ignore an opportunity that could represent a material revenue stream by playing a couple of matches in tas in both contractual agreements and membership. The clubs needs to be proactive with ventures like this and capitalise where it can. If they can lock in a 5 yr deal 1mn a year..Id say go for it

Looks like 2 other Melbourne based clubs are interested in joining us in playing games in Hobart.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...orian-clubs-are-interested-20100612-y4pg.html

As it stands we're looking at playing 2 down there and IIRC we're also slated to play up in Darwin as well. That would mean 3 home games being shifted away from Melbourne, not sure if I like the idea from a going to the game POV, but if it helps improve the bottom line which in turn helps improve the onfield results, then bring it on.

it's a balancing act as I understood the returns from improved stadium deals in melbourne were supposed to negate this as an option to bolster gate reciepts...Would have to be worth >500k-1mn a year in my mind to shift 2 games, anything under that then no way...is a better option than Darwin considering the membership opportunities that can also be leveraged

i'm all for it. club compensates by allowing members free entry into some away games in melbourne. so for a 11game member it's great. 17 game member you probably loses a bit tha's for sure.

for what's it worth, when hawthorn plays in tassie, if the game isn't shown on free to air tv, channell 7 always shows a replay later on in the night. so if that deals stays the same if we were going to move a couple of game down to hobart, then i'd have no problems with that.

When we are a finals side I don't want to be playing home games or away games at 20,000 stadiums. I also want us to be playing all home games at our actual home in front of 40-90,000 in Melbourne every week. END OF STORY

You need to think outside the square a bit and embrace change. Interstate games means a great chance to grab a few mates and go on a long weekend trip to the footy. If it's what best for the club then so be it. I don't think they really care about you wanting every game in your cozy little seat at the G.

Question is why do we play West Coast at the 'G' and play our other home match against the 'Aints' I have never understood why we play lesser drawing teams at MCG. Saints get 2 home games against us each year. When will the AFL make the pathetic draw a fair and equal platform for all participating teams. After all we are contributing to the coffers as are others teams we should all be treated fairly. Hobart would be far better than that other crappy stadium.

It's as simple as this. Big Vic clubs play home games in Melbourne. Small clubs sell games interstate to raise money they can't raise at the gate in Melbourne. Going interstate is as much as saying that we are not at the top table. Collingwood don't have home games in the middle of nowhere. Essendon whose headline attendance lead over us in recent years is in fact for the most part down to venue and draw imbalances and who have fewer members than us do not sell games and wouldn't dream of it. When we are firing we will be getting similar attendances to Collingwood and will have 50,000 plus members - easily in excess of both Carlton and Essendon.

I do not want Richmond FC acting like some little Hawthorn or North. Selling games is saying we are not a leading club.

Rather play 2 games in Hobart and 1 in Darwin than the 3 home games we've been getting at the Dome. Gotta grow the brand to get 75K.
I completely disagree. We need a consistently finalling team. that is what we need. Collingwood have a consistently finalling team and are averaging 60,000 a game with nearly 60,000 members both figures about 20,000 up on when they were basement not so long ago. Those figures are achievable for Richmond... easily achievable..with success. Collingwood don't run off interstate and neither should we. We do not have to.

You are right, when we are playing regular finals we will have 60K attendances and membership so we don't have to sell games interstate to survive like some of the pissant clubs. But it's not about selling games to survive, it's about becoming the competition's powerhouse club. What you're suggesting is we just aim to do what the top clubs do then stop when we get there. We want to surpass Collingwood not equal them. We want to be the biggest club in the country. If selling games interstate sells more memberships outside of Vic and is financially more positive than a couple of shit drawing games at Ethiad then to not do it just because the current "big clubs" don't is uber foolish.

As you said, we'll get the Vic members and crowds just by making finals - playing two less home games at the Dump isn't going to stop that.

Claiming half of Tasmania now is smart, just like building a summer training facility in a massive growth corridor was smart.

I admire your pride Gaelictiogar, but I think it is misplaced in this instance.

Heard Demetriou on the radio yesterday and the AFL is very keen to get at least 2 games in Hobart. More with stadium development to a ceiling of 4 I suspect. Reality its going to happen and as it stands in the right here right now we woudl be very foolish to ignore the opportunity. Maybe when we have 80,000 member s and in the finals reguarly we can rethink but as it stands now it would be economic lunacy to ignore IMHO the best option outside of Victoria, a 55 min flight that costs typically $120 return. Thats one reason why Launceston has been a success as the Hawks supporters can go at a reasonable cost and as a day trip if need be. Apparently they are interested in the Hobart opportunity as well along with Essendon whcih kinda flies int he face of the big clubs dont sell games, in these times you do whatever is takes to remain finacially viable and obviously apart from Collingwood and Carlton no one is exempt.

As for local Tigers support a trip to my Hobart Supporters Club website will clear that up. We have been amazed at the response as has the Club.

to reach bennys bold plans that include eradicating our debt its an imperitive we add major revenue to the club, this is a good idea, NO longer should the RFC bury it's head in the sand and let its rivals scoot past us...I have faith in Benny

Agree with the calls abour playing in Hobart over Etihad :)

As a football club i dont wanna see us miss the boat to a good financial deal + the games in Hobart will most likely be wet and raining which suits our game :thumbsu:
apologies foryou club supporters that get to every game, a bit unfair for me to be supporting selling home games I guess from Canberra but I like to see the Tigers playing in Darwin to build support in the top end, where we are a bit behind Essendon I guess, just by virtue of their good Indigenies performance, withg the Doggies making good ground being a good team, and WC also a natural affinity.

At least a game up there / yr just to stay in it, and we should be to work towards having a home AND an away game in Tassie whilst our Tassie stakes are high - we cld play Hawks at Lonny (away) and again in Hobart (home) - win win (and hopefully we beat them twice for win win, too)

NOW, how about selling a game to the CAPITAL? -we are a great team and should be garnishing support across the country in the NATIONAL competition by playing in its symbolic centre, CANBERRA. Manuka oval is a lovely patch- where the PMs 11 plays dontya know, (the last game I went to was a preseason and it was just about as wet as the PtAdelaide game, except the rain had finished, wld be nice to have another wet weather win eh?) and plus you can come up and go to errr Floriade and ummm the War Memorial and err, then back to Melb I guess...
