For me we have started the last 3 seasons the same way. With slow ball movement, chipping it sideways & not trying to use pace to break lines. Then Dimma wakes up & gets the players to move the ball quicker & our disposal seems to improve with the quicker movement. So whatever Dimma is trying to do in the pre-seasons is obviously not working. We really need to play to our strengths & stop over complicating whatever the game plan is.
You know what the last three seasons have in common? At the beginning of each season we have had injuries to key players, which has a greater effect on our team than it does for any other team in the competition. The reason that is the case is our game plan relies on individuals to come up big in key moments (close games), whether that be Edwards sharking a pack just outside defensive forward and kicking it forward, gaining 50 yards in the process or Deledio taking a contested mark on the wing/high half forward. Now I'm not making an excuse for the team, however this is the reality as our game plan biggest pro is that we keep games close and are generally always a chance heading into the last quarter, while the biggest con is our game plan also means we're never out of arms reach heading into the final quarter, which should have been the case on friday night.
The solution to all this is to play at slightly faster pace so that we give up forward the best chance of being able to compete one on one but also don't compromise our defence by playing recklessly. While we also need to do a far better job of getting the ball to our best ball users who at the same time need not be afraid to be selfish.
