Richmond coach Danny Frawley is confident the Tigers will have re-signed champion forward Matthew Richardson by the end of the week.
The Tigers had been hopeful of announcing the club’s most valuable player had agreed to a new contract at Monday night’s best and fairest count but despite that not being the case, Frawley said he was “very confident” that Richardson would remain a Tiger.
“Hopefully it will be before the end of the week,” Frawley said when asked when Richardson’s re-signing will be announced. “It’s not far away but these things take a little bit of time.”
Richardson is expected to agree to a new contract in time to be part of the Richmond team which leaves Melbourne on Sunday to fly to London to take on Essendon in an exhibition match at The Oval on October 12.
And the big forward, who came under plenty of criticism this season due to a combination of injury and inconsistency, left no-one in any doubt that he wanted to remain at Richmond during Monday’s night best and fairest presentation.
“I love playing at Richmond,” Richardson told the Tigers’ faithful. “I’m a Richmond man, everyone knows that and I want to continue to be that way.”
And Richardson’s true value to the Tigers was emphasised by the fact that he ran second in the best and fairest to skipper Wayne Campbell despite playing only 13 games for the season.
And despite his hamstring problems – Richardson also took out his seventh Michael Roach Medal in just nine games as the Tigers’ leading goalkicker for the season.
However his total number of goals for the season of 36 was far by the lowest total of goals he has recorded in a season in which he has won the Tigers’ leading goalkicker award, with his best being 91 back in 1996 when he enjoyed a rare injury-free season.
