Usually a glass half-full guy 12 - 24 hours post loss. But,

Can we honestly say we have improved this year if we finish 18th, win the spoon, again, and get the no.1 pick ?

Improvement should be beating Freo, Coll, Melb, Carl, Eagles in games where we are a chance to win them. 0 - 5 🙄
We didn't win any of them. Where's the improvement ?

Individually, yeh. But as a team ? I'll love 'em to death but unless this cycle improves NEXT YEAR we will occupy the bottom rungs of the ladder for the foreseeable future.

Anyone give us a chance the next 2 weeks ? Nope.
Or we could have lost all 8 close games we were in?

Don’t discount we won three close games as well.

No one, except Collingwood circa 22-23, wins all of those games.

We were 3-5 in those games so let’s be objective about that.

Finishing position means nothing, the back half has been exactly what you’re looking for in improvement mate - we are 3-8, and 3-5 in the close ones.

Surely that gives you hope?

Not unless Clarko has the golden touch going forward Midas.

I'd probably chuck in the Carlton game purely because they were so desperate to play their injured stars.

The team is still held back by stop gap solutions due to injuries and list holes. It might finally get going next year.

One last (I think) big post for the year hey:

It's not really about the Hawthorn game at all so that's only in the title for completionist reasons but instead a look at the season as a whole. I think probably the most important takeaway is not to let the last two weeks colour the look at what's happened over the course of the entire year.

Also other topics covered: how the team evolved week-to-week, what worked, what didn't work, list demographics, minutes played by age, contract status, what's coming next, and extra bits and pieces in between all that.

Surprise: An extra post coming out of Trade Period.

The first half is all about summarising North's moves and the benefits they bring. The second half is about other moves from around the league but that's less relevant for here.

I especially like "Opinions on Jack Darling’s arrival at North are a good test of football knowledge."

It's as brutal as Rick's ever been.

Could have been more brutal if I wanted to be! I should have added 'if you can't see how Darling is an upgrade you haven't watched North this season' ... probably can't blame neutrals who don't get paid for not watching, I'd expect better from journalists who do get paid though.

Darling could be 36 years old and still be an upgrade of some description as a second key forward target strictly on field, before we even get into all the extra things he'll bring, like teaching Larkey some forward craft to properly round out his game just for starters.

Yeah that makes sense. Your thoughts though on choosing Darling over Day or Membrey?

If Day could stay on the park he would have been my first choice, although watch Brisbane's medical team be wizards again and get 15+ games out of him next year.

I see Membrey as more of the floating/roaming third tall type; seems like they wanted someone to be the #2 to Larkey instead, with the third tall doubling as the second ruck (Teakle, Comben, whoever, etc), Maybe putting two and two together and getting nine, but feels a slightly different type to what they wanted to fill out the forward line, for better or worse.

I love this. I reckon for the forward line we’ll aim to play two talls (Larkey, Darling), two mids (Zurhaar, Durs) and two smalls (Curtis and Jai).

I would be shocked if Darling's numbers in 2025 get anywhere near Teakle's first 3 games as our second forward.

As for teaching Larkey forward craft - Larkey's an AA (achieved in a shitful side) - he will be teaching Darling forward craft if there is any teaching going on down at Arden St.

Pink's the comparison to make, Teakle was playing as the third tall in the setup. In those games you mention he was only targeted twice with inside 50 entries, Pink six times (obviously Larkey a million times more).

Darling knows things about forward craft, how to lead, and how to work with your fellow keys that Larkey hasn't even had to think about since he became best 22. Not that it's Larkey's fault either, there's been no one else worthy. Compare it to Darling who spent a decade playing second banana to Kennedy and working in tandem with him.
