Analysis Rioli, Mitchell, Gibson - Simpson better have a plan for these blokes

Stratton out is a big out for the Hawks backline- means Gibson has to take a better opponent and makes him take accountability. I'd say he gets either jack, or the resting ruck. So whoever that is needs to make sure that they either lead away from jk, or take Gibson deep.

As good as form that Frawley is in, id back jk in if we can isolate him with decent ball.

We have to make Mitchell stop and kick over the mark at every opportunity. In clear space, he's dangerous, but his kicking isn't so good when he has to go back over his mark. Make sure he doesn't get the cheapie running past off half back, he loves those.

Not sure on Cyril. Maybe shep?

In round 2 Simmo probably thought having Emac, Jetta and Redden in + the web would have got the job done. Now that we are back with a more flexible backline it will be interesting to see what Simmo has up his sleeve. But at the end of the day it will all come down to how much pressure we can put on their mids. We need players like Masten, Hutchings and Yeo to have big games and support Gaff, Shuey and Priddis or we will see the same results as the last two games v the Hawks.

True, as was seen in the QF highlights in the other thread it was good games by Yeo, Lecras, Cripps & Hutchings that helped.

Web doesn't accommodate tagging. Unless you want to play man on man. Someone needs to deliver an early knee to Mitchell.
Wouldn't mind Nelson on rioli for a bit of niggle.
Gibson's impact will depend on our delivery into f50.

The reason why we won the ball was the extra at the contest. Simpson said so in his presser. Said we were being beaten at the contest so he had to bring the extra into the middle. So we then won ball but because of our bomb and hope ball movement Gibson had a field day.
Man up Gibson we take that extra away from the ball. We do that then we go back to being beaten soundly at the contest. Gibson doesn't get any ball but neither do we.
The plan is we get the ball but retain it knowing that there is a sweeper, but most of our mids have no composure when it comes to that.

Therein lies the issue. We win our own ball as most teams do against Hawthorn except us recently we can have a full forward line and Gibson is accountable.
I think he didn't try it in the Grand Final and backed the web and it failed.

Winning the ball at the contest is something determined on the day. There's no golden rule that Hawthon will prevail in this. Those apparent tactics of an extra at the contest and consequently a spare for them down back misfired spectacularly in round 2. We need a better plan than that, but i'm guessing that Josh Gibson is hoping we stuck with leaving him free.

I dont think his plan is to start the game like that. Its only if we are being beaten again at the contest that he has to do something. Like I say above he can maintain a man on man forward line but if we aren't getting the ball there then we have 0 chance of winning. So I think the extra in the middle is required as a necessity its just what our mids do with the ball once they get it that has Gibson rubbing his hands together.

I think Hutchings is a perfect player to run with Mitchell and Nelson would be useful on Cryil, he might lose the foot race but he's a bit taller than rioli so should look to play in front and chop off the passes on our narrow ground.

Also like the OP idea of bumping Rioli around all day and being a bit unsociable, need to show a bit of that against the top teams.

Hutchings is a dumb footballer. Mitchell will be too clever for him. Play yeo on him as more of a match up. Yeo could have a 15 mins of brilliance that could make mitchell defend for a bit.

I think this year yeo should have been playing a negating role on the best mids in the game and learning off them.

Haha thanks man!
yes I can still remember watching that game at the time! It was massive! The hype about Priddis being out.. with my views on him of course.. AND we totally didn't need him! We smashed those ba#$$#stard Hawks!!
but yes I do also do many other things besides Priddis bashing...
this is all me.. on Facebook..

Yeo is an impact player and wasted as a tagger. I'm also not convinced he has the tank to run with Mitchell all night. If we're going to put anyone on Mitchell, Hutchings is the guy to do it.

I reckon Nelson could also do it and the niggle between the two would be great. But he is likely to line up in defence.

Either way I hope Jacko maintains his aggression. We simply have to assert ourselves from the start if we're to have any chance against the Hawks. I want Hurn to crunch someone like he did Boak in the Port game too.

Don't you love it when a plan works!!!

Hutch terrific tonight on Mitchell - the thing with Mitchell is you need to put him under pressure when he disposes by foot because he is so well skilled either side.

Kept Gibson to probabaly a third of the touches he racked up in R2. WIN

Rioli kept under wraps but led the Hawks in tackles along with Burgoyne. WIN

I want that side back

Fierce pressure, closing down space, strong attack on the footy, clean ball skills, instinctive decision making........
And there they were.

Almost a carbon copy of last years QF

Where have you been all year, these eagles

Gibson was free in defence for periods again tonight but when you win the footy it is all for naught if you maintain possession and we did that. Priddis, Gaff, Hutch & Cripps all checked bombs at times and used the handball option nearby. Makes for much better ball movement and deeper inside 50's.

Gibson played like an absolute bridesmaid tonight.
he loooks average when he has to defend. Most of the time he has stratton to third man up and what not. he just racks up the ball. I would take gov's 15 touches over gibsons 25. Gov actually defends well and his kicking is arguable better.
