Very sad to hear of Dennis' passing, he was one of the great commentators.

RIP Dennis

Not many commentators have a near unanimous approval rating like Dennis had. Always sounded like so many of his classic lines were thought up as the action unfolded. Unlike someone like Huddo who you can tell he's been thinking about and practicing a line in the shower all week that he can shoe-in at some point.
100% agree. I've gone off Huddo massively in the past couple of years. His word play is just too much these days.

A very sad and unexpected loss. RIP Dennis.

If Australian football were known internationally he'd be up there with Yogi Berra and Murray Walker- except that Berra and Walker relied on malapropisms and mangling the language, whereas Cometti worked hard at spontaneity. That's a skill all in itself, and few can do it.

Dennis = AFL’s Martin Tyler.

Best commentator in my lifetime

He spawned a heap of shit commentators. His wit and sharp calls are impossible to match, guys like Zempilas would try, but would absolutely fall flat and couldn't match him in wit, humour, or even the skill of calling games

In general I've heard similar all around in sport the world, Ian Eagle is close, none really were better or as good.

One of one. Sad day.

The greatest.

A legend of the golden era, Dennis, Bruce, Sandy, Drew.. we were spoilt for choice.

Excelled at the Olympics also amongst other events.

Devastating news 😢

I'm glad to read some of the articles are mentioning that he was also a brilliant cricket commentator. Remember hearing him on a radio a lot when I was younger. Just checked and he worked with Alan McGilvray for 13 years. Good apprenticeship to serve.

Easily the best footy commentator I can think of. Never got cringeworthy and creepy like McAvaney, never became forced and manufactured like Hudson. And was never a moronic barracker like pretty much everyone now.

Grew up as a mad west perth supporter. Our next door neighbour was a famous ex player of the club and he got his son and I into the changerooms before a game. Dennis had taken over as coach that year. We were in the rooms listening to him rev the boys up. It was an absolute eye opener and education as a 12 year old listening to the great man ripping into the boys – giving the old fashion expletive laden spray all coaches did back then – and still do I guess. Our jaws were on the floor. Then Dennis came up afterwards to say hello and chat in his usual charming manner like you see on TV. An absolute legend and easily in the top 2-3 greatest commentator the country has had with Richie and Alan McGilvray. Ian Brayshaw (James Dad) was on ABC and said the great man had been quite ill for a while and was glad Dennis was at peace now. RIP.

I know most would associate Dennis with footy but I still think this is his finest moment.

Just one of a long line of excellent and extremely professional sport commentators from ABC Perth.

From George Grljusich through to current day callers like Corbin Middlemas with imo Dennis and Clinton Grybus being the best.

He, I believe, was also heir apparent to Alan McGilvray as the no. 1 cricket commentator at the ABC.
